2012 All Star Teams ... as per Open Ice Hitter Not a big fan of the fans stuffing the ballot box for the home team, or the cronyism used in fleshing out the rosters by the league …. So here are the real All Stars thus far in the season …. No political correctness here either. If you are as bad as the Blue Jackets, or as bland as the Flames this year, you aren’t going to have any All Stars … Eastern Conference Goalies Tim Thomas Bruins Thomas remains the money goalie in the NHL, a guy who can win games for his team when they have an off night … ultra competitive, never quits on a puck … Marc Andre Fleury Penguins Playing on a team loaded with big names, Fleury is often overlooked … he gives the Penguins solid goalkeeping, and has excelled at various levels. His team can count on him when they need solid netminding … Hank Lundquist Rangers Begrudgingly, this guy gets on the list. The Rangers are having a dream season, and Lundquist, with all his massive equipment, hasn’t hurt them … he has played well, and deserves some credit, though most goes to his oversized gear Defense Zdeno Chara Bruins Big Z is a perennial All Star for a reason …. Smart enough on the ice, a physical presence, an intimidating player either within the rules or with the gloves off. And don’t forget the cannon of a shot from the point … Kimmo Timonen Flyers Underrated and undersized d-man is smart, efficient, slick with the puck …reliable too, as good of a number 2 d-man as you can find Erik Karlsson Senators Leads defenseman in scoring by a wide margin … and is still very young … Dennis Wideman Capitals Big Money Wides has an impact as an offensive d-man, and has thrown some big hits in his time as well … Kris Letang Penguins Letang has had injury issues, but is a difference maker when he is in the lineup. Has blossomed into a far bigger role than even the Penguins could have hoped for |

Rating the Players
| HITS OF THE DAY OpenIceHitter is on facebook as Open Ice Hitter - Pure Hockey Feb 5 - The Rangers dream season continues, as they get a late goal from marquee sniper Marion Gaborik in period two, then a quick response to Wayne Simmonds goal early in period three on route to stomping the Flyers 5-2 ….. Again, Philly couldn’t count on Ilya Bryzgalov for big money goaltending ….. Of note for the Rangers : Brad Richards sits in 83rd spot in the NHL scoring race, with 34 points …. He is on pace for a 55 point campaign…. Though that might not reflect so well on a big money off-season free agent acquisition, the Rangers are winning, and Richards brings a lot of different attributes to a team …. Marion Gaborik staying healthy is key to the Rangers success …. - Good to see Brayden Schenn back in the lineup for the Flyers …. Schenn was the key piece in the Mike Richards deal, but has been injured a lot this year …. He put up his fifth goal of the year …. Had to wonder about that wicked right he took from Kovalchuk-Grossman, considering that Schenn had brain trauma issues recently …. - There is a bit of fan and blog chatter circulating regarding the Oilers less-than-dynamic duo at the management level …. Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini …. And what the Oilers should do with these guys …. There is also talk of Oilers owner Darryl Katz possibly giving Tambellini a contract extension ….. take a look at the big picture. The Oilers have been awful for a decade. In that time, they have managed one improbable playoff run to the Stanley Cup final, a series in which they played well, but lost to Carolina …. Aside from that exciting spring stint of success, the Oil have taken their licks, taken their licks, etc, etc, same old song ….. the one constant being Kevin Lowe. Why exactly does he still have a job in Oiler’s management ? He has overseen years of failure. Steve Tambellini was brought in for a fresh perspective, but as written prior, he hasn’t made an impact in any manner that has improved the team ….. he picked up Ryan Whitney, which could be good if Whitney were able to stay healthy, bringing in Ryan Jones has been a plus, but that’s about it for good moves, and they still leave the Oil near the bottom of the NHL standings ….. If the Oil brass try to act like brilliant hockey minds for selecting Taylor Hall and the Nuge, well, just roll your eyes …. Between Hall, Seguin, the Nuge and Landeskog, the Oil were going to get a good player. The Oilers most astute selection has been Jordan Eberle, who has been successful beyond the Oilers wildest dreams …. Any way you look at it, Lowe and Tambellini have not made the team any better ….. Lowe has had many years on the job to make the Oilers a good team. It hasn’t happened. Tambellini has had 4 seasons at the controls …. His biggest move was banishing Sheldon Souray to the AHL in a public spat …. Souray is now back in the NHL in Dallas, hammering pucks at goalies, on a team looking down at the Oilers in the standings ….. It would be a good time for some fresh faces in Edmonton. Who might that be ? There are lots of smart hockey people in this world. Nobody can do worse than Lowe has, or Tambellini for that matter. Of course, the world of pro hockey is an exclusive club, and the preference is often to recycle old hands instead of giving a new mind with new ideas a chance … but think of this : Often fresh faces with a new approach have success. Think of Scott Bowman, Mike Keenan, Roger Neilsen … the Oilers have a chance here to get off the beaten path and the next great GM …. Butit might mean taking a chance on an unknown …. Kind of like they did back in 1979 with a young fella by the name of Glen Sather ….. - A bit of a rip here for folks that run sites or blogs …. Put your contact information on your site, as in have your e-mail address on the site. Not some pain in the ass link where it takes five minutes to enter information before the reader can type an e-mail … and don’t force the reader to “ join “ your site in order to send an e-mail …. That is a cowardly way to run a blog or site. Are you afraid of negative feedback ? Make it easy for readers to send in their thoughts …. Feb 4 - Oddball game of the Day : New Jersey take a 6-0 lead over the Flyers, have that as a cushion going into the third period ….. and manage to withstand a Flyer third period push to take a 6-4 win out of Philly ….. Sergei Bobrovsky was awful in net for the Flyers …. Kovalchuk-Grossman put up 3 points for the Devils, and beat the tar out of young Flyer Brayden Schenn …. Has Paul Holmgren accepted the fact that he needs a big stud defenseman with some snarl on that back end ? Yup, that means Shea Weber …. Weber can’t walk away from Nashville this summer, he would have to be dealt. So who do the Flyers give up ? Nashville will want a forward, so Holmgren is likely looking at moving VanRiemsdyk or Couturier … possibly Matt Read … take Brayden Schenn out of the picture because of his injury issues this year … one of those kids, maybe Matt Carle, not sure how much interest Nashville would have in the pending UFA, possibly one of the Flyers young depth defenders, Like Marc Bourdon …. Watch this closely, and watch for Ken Holland and the Wings to be in the picture, too ….. Holland has shown far more discretion than Holmgren, but at some point, the Wings will need to land a gamebreaking defenseman … - Steve Yzerman suggesting that drafted junior age players ( 18 and 19 year olds – 20 year olds are already AHL eligible ) be eligible to play / be sent to the AHL …. This is obviously in regards to Brett Connolly …. Can’t see this going over with the CHL and its franchise owners … Sure, all the mega stars are gone as soon as they are drafted, but many a player has returned to great success after being drafted. Remember the great scoring race between Joe Sakic and Theoren Fleury all those years back ? Never would have happened had they been AHL ( or at the time, also IHL ) eligible ….. the other side of the argument would be the likes of Jordan Eberle, by all accounts the Oilers best training camp player a few years back, but returned to the Regina Pats because the Oil were awful, and he alone would not have changed it …. Or Joe Thornton, an OHL scoring champ going into his draft year, but not NHL ready …. Thornton’s debut in the NHL was no dream season …. - Zac Rinaldo goes a little of the rails against the Devils, with a late hit, and a slew foot …. Brendan Shanahan does the right thing, coming down quickly and decisively on Rinaldo, with two fines for a total of $5K ….. meanwhile, Nik Kronwall takes a shot at Ales Hemsky’s head, going airborne, though not as blatantly as he usually does …. Sorry Wing fans, be honest about it, Hemsky was vulnerable, and Kronwall’s action fit the definition of a charge or the headshot rule, however you want to approach it …. Shanahan’s weak spot continues to be his old team, the Wings, and though Shanahan has been excellent and fair regarding pretty much every other matter, he has to start dealing with the Wings just like every other team … - Hit of the Day : Brooks Orpik sends Dan Paille flying with a beauty open ice hit, this looked so wild, Paille flying backwards, out of control, after Orpik crushed him … Feb 3 - Senator fans – when interpreting the standings, don’t fail to notice your team has played more games than the other teams. This does not bode well for Ottawa, who have been cooled off recently … - Need to explain something …. Overtime losses and sham shootout losses are viewed here as losses, no matter how nice and rosy and politically correct the NHL wants to be …. So the standings are looked at as simply wins and losses …. If a team has played 50 games, and won 30 of them, then they will be referred to as 30-20 …. Not some lame 30-13-7 or 30-10-10 …. Time for the league to can the loser point, and stop rewarding losers and losing ….. it is a rough world out there …. We need to make sure these players are ready to handle it when their careers end … it doesn’t help them by awarding them loser points …. Think some guy at a Vegas poker table will take mercy on the next Darren McCarty, and say, “ Hey, no problem, you lost, but keep a million, you come from the NHL, where losing only costs half as much as the other games “ …. Anyway, more to the point, the loser point fudges the standings …. - Will have to straighten out John MacKinnon at the Edmington Journal …. He referred to Sam Gagner as an appreciating asset ….. oh boy …. Gagner has a dream game, and good for him, but MacKinnon needs to give his head a shake …. Gagner had 22 points going into the game, as the number 200 scorer in the NHL …. After his stunning performance, Gagner had moved up to slot 110 … with 30 points …. Gagner has been a hot and cold player throughout his career, putting up points late in his rookie and sophomore campaigns well after the Oil were out of playoff contention …. Over the course of the last two years, Gagner has really improved his game and effort, and will be a fine number 2 or three center …. But an appreciating asset ? Uh, no. He had a brilliant game. One. One brilliant game. It was awesome. But it has only happened once. And it won’t happen again. If the Oil brass was smart, which it isn’t, they would have dealt Gagner last season, or over the past summer. Gagner has 5 years in the league, and most GM’s have notices that Gagner isn’t a good skater, and though he has good offensive instincts, playing on the same team as prodigies like Hall, Eberle and the Nuge, it is obvious Gagner is a second tier player …. The x factor here is that GM’s are human, and can be fooled, or foolish … so who knows, maybe Glen Sather forks over a couple of first round picks, or Carl Hagelin and a first for Gagner …. When all is said and done, Gagner would serve the Oilers purposes as the wheelman on line 2 or 3 …. - Scott Gomez stats : 7 points ….. Sam Gagner vs Chicago BlackHawks : 8 points …. Feb 2 - Huge night for the player who was referred to here as “ Twerp” for a couple of winters ….Sam Gagner has the biggest offensive showing of any player in more than two decades, putting up an 8 point evening playing with up and coming superstars Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall …. The last player to have an 8 point evening? Hall of Famer and mega – legend Mario Lemieux …. Gagner lived the dream as the Oil once again pounded Chicago. Playing in front of the Oilers faithful at Northlands Coliseum, Gagner scored 4 times, and was in on 4 other goals. How could one not be happy for Gagner, a player who has re-invented himself over the past two seasons ? He was working hard, playing both ways, doing everything he possibly could to help his team win, and everything went right for him. This was great to see …. Gagner himself seemed a bit shell shocked, but he kept going out on the ice, working hard, and going to the net, shooting or making nice plays with his star linemates …. The way this trio moved the puck around was great to see. Hall and Eberle each had 4 point nights, but seemed very enthused for Gagner, who had become the focus of the fans in the arena after his hat trick, and the focus of the tv broadcasters after he picked up his fourth point. By the time the game ended, Gagner was on cloud 9, Northlands was going nuts, and he was named as the only star of the game, in a fitting move. The Edmonton fans had been chanting “ We want 10 ! “ hoping to push Gagner to the greatest single game achievement in hockey history, a 10 point night, something only Darryl Sittler has done ( with the late 1970’s Leaves, nonetheless ) …. Gagner said he felt like it was some kind of joke that he was living, but it was real, a dream come true, and as improbable as it is for anyone to rack up 8 points in a game in this era of tightly controlled hockey, Gagner did it, he had the night of his life …. By the way, coming into the game, Gagner had 22 points …. He now sits at 30 points. Jordan Eberle leads all Oilers with 50 points in 47 games …. - The Sam Gagner trade rumours were discussed after the game, and the next day …. Immediately following the game, emotions were high, and even Darren Dreger, usually a fairly reserved gent, was caught up in the sentiment, saying something along the lines of the Oilers not trading Gagner after a night like that … reality is though, if the Oilers were looking to shop Gagner, his value might spike a bit after that night, and as Rob Brown said, for the right offer, anyone can be traded. It happened to Gretzky on more than one occasion …. One of the braodcasters from TSN was all choked up with the emotion of the night, and had Gagner suddenly headed for superstardom, but in all honesty, the best assessment of Gagner and his big night came on 630 CHED radio, where it was acknowledged that he had done something amazing, but was still a guy who is at best a second line center, or a third line guy on a great team. Gagner has learned to play a complete game, he likes a bit of rough stuff, he is willing to drop the gloves and have a go with even the likes of Francois Beauchemin, and though his name is in the rumour mill, he has found a spot with the Oil as a solid support player. He isn’t a great skater, and he isn’t very big, but he is a smart enough player, and he has learned what kind of effort is required to play in the NHL … - Oiler fans have to be loving the two beatings their team has laid on the Black Hawks in Edmonton this season … 9-2 and 8-4 …. Like lopsided peewee hockey scores …. Chicago looked good early, but then Corey Crawford became a factor. Not a good factor. Crawford was awful. Stan Bowman hasn’t made many mistakes running the Black Hawks, but in giving Crawford a big deal, he messed up. Crawford relies on huge equipment as opposed to skill and instinct. The BlackHawks weakness is between the pipes, just like last year, when another rare Bowman mistake, Marty Turco, proved to the league how washed up he was …. - Interesting how the sports news crews and broadcasters refer vaguely to Patrick Sharp’s wrist injury …. Avoiding the mention of Jiri Hudler’s name, or the fact the Detroit Red Wing worm smashed Sharp’s wrist with a vicious slash …. Where is this going ? Yup. TO Brendan Shanahan … ex Detroit Red Wing …. Hudler should have been set down for about 5 games for that slash. It says right in the NHL rules that you can’t be swinging your stick at people. Or in the rules for most teams, anyway. I am beginning to suspect that the Detroit Red Wings, and the refs, have a separate book for calling Detroit penalties …. You watch a Wings game, and how much stick work they are allowed to get away with, it looks pretty bad …. Is it because they don’t dress a goon, because they have such a heavy European flavor, with big name European superstars ? Sure looks that way …. This isn’t to detract from the fact that the Wings are a premier team. Mike Babcock is as good a coach as you will find, but he is maybe overlooked for his contribution because he stepped in and kept the Wings amongst the top teams in the league. It is what is expected in Detroit. Nik Lidstrom is a quiet and classy player, squeaky clean, Hall of Fame bound. But ….. you watch that team play. Watch close, and even Wing fans, be honest about what you see. A lot of worms and a lot of stickwork. Zetterberg is given a lot of leeway with his stick. Hudler was allowed to bust a guy’s wrist with a blatant slash viewed by two zebras. When he was still playing, Kris Draper had an episode of spearing and stick swinging in Phoenix that would have gotten the likes of Dan Carcillo or Andy Sutton banned for life ….. As for Nik Kronwall, he goes airborne a lot, targeting players heads, and is never held accountable by the league …. Whereas a guy like Zac Rinaldo, an edgy player fast with his fists, he lays guys out with clean hits, but gets called for charging, roughing, etc ….. Hey, when even Bob McKenzie does a blurb on TSN defending Rinaldo and calling out the blind bat refs, you know you are getting railroaded … the point is, the Wings do have an advantage from the refs, and are getting a free pass from Brendan Shanahan …. And don’t bother with any “ What about Brendan Smith “ bs …. The kid has playedwhat, two games in the big league ? To straighten this out, Shanahan has to sit down the likes of Hudler and Kronwall when they bust someone’s wrist or go airborne in an attempt to crush a guy and ring his bell … and as for the dolts in stripes that call the game on the ice, they need to get their heads out of their, ahem … you know … and call the Wings they same as they call the Bruins … - By the way, in beating Vancouver, the Wings hit the 35 win mark before any other team … and hang another failure mark on Bob Luongo …. Luongo struggles when he plays elite teams or plays in important “ test “ style games …. No wonder why the Faker-Divers like to go with Schneider when playing a formidable adversary ….. regarding the zebras in this game, well, would be challenge discerning all of the Canucks whining and high diving from the Wing stick work, wouldn’t it ? - Hit of the Night 1 : Pernell Karl Subban destroys Devil rookie Adam Larsson with a thundering check just inside the Hab blueline, as Larsson foolish tried to evade Subban with the puck on his stick. Subban simply stepped up and hammered the slow footed Swedish rookie, leaving Larsson laying face down on the ice, writhing in pain …. One of the beauties of hockey is the physical challenge, and the strength and skill required to play the game, as well as the danger and risk … Subban reinforced those ideas on Larsson. If you aren’t bigger and stronger and faster, you need to be smarter. In this case, Larsson was not using his head. Everyone knows Subban is a wing nut out there, and a headhunter. It is what makes him a good player. Did Larsson think Subban would not try to play the body ??? - Hit of Night 2 : The aforementioned Zac Rinaldo stretches out Jordin Tootoo behind the Flyer net, a wicked and clean hit, in a situation where Tootoo had his head down …. Textbook play on the body, removing an opponent from the equation …. - Why did Nashville play Anders Lindback against the Flyers ? When you are battling for position, and holding onto a playoff spot, you don’t play your backup against a top 4 team from the other conference …… Feb 1 - Classic game between the Rangers and Sabres, a 1-0 victory for the blueshirts ….if you don’t appreciate a 1-0 victory or low scoring game, you need to learn how …there were some good saves in this games, even athletic ones by two goalies known for wearing massive equipment … Whine Miller didn’t do anything stupid in this game, either, and didn’t whine about anything afterward, so that is refreshing …. Only drawback was the decision by sham shootout – though it must be acknowledged that Gaborik’s sham shootout goal was a pure snipe …. - Absolutely love the long range stinker goals over the past two days …. First, Dennis Seidenberg of the Bruins floats a 90 footer past Senator goalie Craig Anderson … this was classic …. Just as he hit the center ice redline, Seidenberg whistled a shot in at the Ottawa goalie …. Not sure what Anderson was thinking, or what he was looking at, but the shot made him look bad, should have been a routine stop, but instead the puck went in the net just inside the post, halfway up on the blocker side …. Then in the Florida – Washington game, Mikael Samuelson scores on a wrist shot from outside the blueline, a total softie that Caps goalie Michael Neuvirth someone managed to allow into the net. Guarantee some of his teammates were choked about that one. Bantam aged players would not be impressed with their goalie allowing a goal like that …. - Milan Lucic scored a beauty of a goal in the Bruins win over Ottawa, that shot from the slot to the top corner, past Craig Anderson’s trapper …. That is about as textbook as it gets when scoring goals … pick up the puck, identify your target area, a get the shot away with as much velocity as possible ….. Lucic is going to be a monster for Team Canada in the next Olympics at Sochi, Russia …. Huge, physical and intimidating, plays hard both ways, and he can score …. - Also liked the Ville Leino goal against Montreal the other night, where Leino picked up a pass going toward the slot, executed a perfect toe drag, then beat Carey Price like a rented mule with a shot to the top corner over Price’s trapper …. To bad for Leino it was only tally number four on the year … think he is missing playing with Briere and Hartnell ? - Max Pacoreitty scored in that game for the Habs, in a losing effort, but for Pacoreitty, it was goal number 18 … a year ago, the Habs and their fans and media would have had us all believe that Pacoreitty was totally mangled. Lo and behold, Pacoreitty comes back as exactly what the Habs need, a big bodies, fleet footed player who can score …. - More on the Habs – Sabres tilt the other night, and some trash talk that supposedly took place …. Here is the deal for Pacoreitty – if he is going to trash talk with any type of edge, or say anything even remotely ignorant to an opponent, then he has to be a big boy and understand that he will get it back …. So when him and Gaustad reportedly exchange verbal blasts about Bruin tormentors Chara and Lucic, it is all fair game. No whining allowed if someone queries Pacoreitty regarding the state of his relations with Big Chara ….. - So the Canucks are playing Corey Schneider against their two biggest rivals, the Black Hawks and Bruins ….. what does this say about Bob Luongo ? Nothing good, that is for sure … basically that he has a psyche as tough as eggshells ….. so how can they trade Schneider when Luongo has proven to be incapable of holding it together when the serious pressure sets in ? …. Mike Gillis would be crazy to trade Schneider …. Of course, that doesn’t mean it wont happen … - Hasn’t been much said about the Lightning going after a goalie …. Who would they go after, anyway ? …. All the big goalie moves during the summer have been failures …. Bryzgalov has been medicore in Philly, Vokoun has been bad in Washington, and Semyon Varlamov in Colorado has not been all that good … Could Tampa find a decent goalie to pick up ? More likely they would have to take a risk on guy, and that description would apply to Corey Schneider, too, though Schneider has played well, everyone is overlooking the fact that he has never been an NHL starter …. Jonathan Bernier could be worth a try …. Anterro Nittymaki of the Sharks could return to Tampa, but would have to be viewed as a short attempt at goaltending stability, since he is always wounded …. Tampa are still close enough to a playoff spot to squeak in, but they can’t afford to lose any games due to bad tending….. - If, as Damien Cox suggests, Mikhail Grabovski wants $5 mill per annum, the Leaves would be smart to walk away. Grabovski has been okay for the Leaves, but he is no star player, and has never faced the pressure of the post season …. Could be wrong, but he seems like the type that would wilt at the thought of facing the same team, and its bangers and muckers, in a 7 game series, kind of like a Vancouver Canuck does against the Bruins …. When you hear of guys like this looking for a big payday on a guaranteed contract, it really indicates that the time is right for performance based pay in the NHL … - Couple of good games on the Feb 2 schedule …. First off, Detroit playing the Faker-Divers. The Wings have again perched themselves atop the West, and the Canucks ( aka Faker-Divers ) have shaped up nicely in the regular season as well. This will be a good game …. Edmonton and the Black Hawks …. Early in the year, the Oil pummelled the Hawks. It was a great day for Oiler fans. Times have changed, the Oil are bad again, and the Hawks look ready for a long playoff run … but the Nuge could return for the Oil. The Nuge, Eberle and Hall are worth the watch …. Jan 30 - Blue Team 12 White Team 9 Lots of goal scoring in the All Star game, and nobody got hurt, so call it a success …. The All Star game is basically aimed at kids, and the fans of whatever team / city host it. It isn’t good hockey, because nobody can afford to get hurt …. Take it for what it is, a laid back weekend, a break from the intensity of the regular season … - How would the Pittsburgh Penguins look with Jonathan Toews in the lineup, as opposed to Jordan Staal ? Could very well have happened, but the Penguins chose Staal over Toews in the entry draft back in the day …. Toews has developed into one of the elite players on the planet, and while Jordan Staal is no slouch, he has been injured several times, missing a lot of time … - Stewart Valley farmer / Montreal Canadien forward Travis Moen’s name is bouncing around the rumour mill …. A big and gritty grinder, Moen is exactly what the Canucks need, or any playoff team for that matter …. He would be a great fit in Detroit or Boston as well, two teams that are frontrunners for a Cup run …. - Interesting that the whole Jeff Carter in Columbus thing is back in the news again, in terms of Carter not wanting to be there …. What a disaster of a year for Scott Howson and the entire Blue Jacket organization …. How can they not clean house in the off season ? What do they do with goalie Steve Mason ? One rumour mill had the Jackets dumping Mason via waivers ….. - Things get good from here …… the next month will see rosters finalized, and March will clean out a few more teams from playoff contention ….. setting up early April for a frantic finish, at which point the Leaves may even end up in the post season, but don’t hold your breath on that thought … - More to come on this subject soon …. The reason why the players and their union, the nhlpa, will never have much support from fans in any labor battle, strike, lockout, or whatever you want to call it …. Fans identify with the players, many players come from average backgrounds. They could very easily have been the kid next door …. To think that they are squawking for more money and easier money when they are pulling in pro hockey player dough is insulting to the average hockey fan …. Mix in a few posturing lawyers, and fans feel contempt and disgust … Jan 29 - 108.8mph Zdeno Chara slapshot in the skills competition ….. the big man can shoot …. - That little breakaway thing early in the “ skills “ competition …. Lame, even stupid, and totally pointless …. Sure, it might have amused some younger kids, because it was at that level …. It looked like 9 and 10 year olds goofing around at the far end of the rink … to call it a skill for professional players, who get paid millions, well ….. not a good demonstration. A total joke, with diehard fans not laughing …. A gimmick is always a gimmick …. - The news regarding Sidney Crosby and the discovery of problems with some vertebrae could be a good thing for Crosby and hockey fans …. Hope this clears things up for Crosby, and allows him to get back to peak condition ….. he would change the playoff outlook in a big way if he is able to return for the Penguins this year … - Interesting note by Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, noting that the Tri City Americans acquired the Western League rights to Brett Connolly …. Connolly is playing regularly for the Lightning in Tampa, but the season looks lost … he would be a huge boost for the Americans if he were returned to the WHL to finish the season … - More wild rumors, from the Boston Globe, saying that the Bruins could move Tim Thomas to Chicago ….. or that the Bruins could cut loose Thomas this summer …. Who knows what the real story is inside the dressing room or front office after Thomas little stunt …. “ This isn’t about politics “ or whatever Thomas said, regarding him not wanting to be seen with a certain politician ….. whatever, he can do what he wants, but he should have thought about his statement a bit more …… though he is up in years for a pro athlete, he is still the premier goalie in the NHL ….. the Bruins would be foolish to offload him in favor of Tuuka Rask at this point … - Ever notice the quirky mechanics to Daniel Alfredsson’s slap shot technique ? He kind of twists his blade back when he cocks the twig for the shot …. Looks a little bit odd, but a few other players use the same technique …. Can’t beat the straight up hammering of the likes of Chara or Weber, though …. Jan 28 - Ryan Suter proclaims to the world he will not re-sign with Nashville before the trade deadline … so he is likely going to leave the team …. This guy will be a huge addition to teams like Detroit or the Flyers … If the Bruins could find a way to land this guy, they would be loaded on the back end … David Poile has to get something significant in return for Suter, so he can’t let him play out the year and then try to deal him ….. If the Predators lose both Suter and Weber, it is a huge blow to the franchise …. - Apparently Dallas Star captain Brenden Morrow is on the trade market … stunning, and possibly a mistake on the part of the Dallas Stars … Morrow is a career Dallas Star, and go-hard grit player who can score … Morrow looked good in the 2010 Olympics … a superb piece to any team for the playoffs … Morrow would be a perfect fit in Detroit …. - Hot rumor of the day out of Montreal, so take it with a grain of salt …. Published in the Vancouver Province, started by Enrice Ciccone, former NHL thug …. He claims the Canucks / Faker-Divers are trying to land Corey Perry in exchange for Corey Schneider, Mason Raymond, Keith Ballard and a 3rd rounder ….. ??? …. This would be a stunner of a deal …. Perry would really change the Canucks dynamic, and keep in mind, though Schneider gets lots of praise at this stage, he has never actually been in the role of starting NHL goaltender … - Interesting that Chicago opted to trade for Brendan Morrison of the Flames …. Not sure what they gave up for him, but he is not near the player that Derek Roy is, and the Sabres are supposedly ready to deal the former Kitchener Ranger and longtime Sabre …. - Cam Ward’s name is in the rumor mill as well ….. Ward has been a decent NHL starting goalie, but not a superstar …. He was superb in the Hurricanes run to the Stanley Cup back in the day, but has not carried the team consistently since then ….. Ward would be worth possibly a second round pick or a second to third line forward, or number 5 or 6 d-man …anything more than that is too much … Jan 26 - Regarding the All Star “draft” …. Enough already ….. Who gets picked first ? Who gets picked last ? Who Really Cares ? …. Return some dignity to the event , and eliminate this foolishness … though some folks undoubtedly get some enjoyment out of the whole shenanigan, keep in mnd that people also like “ reality tv “, and there is little “ entertainment “ less dignified or less intelligent than that stuff …. Seriously, these are the league All Stars, minus some of the fan favorites that get voted in because the game is in their hometown on any given year …. Do not subject the players to any type of degradation, like a public selection process ….. - If it is true that Jim Rutherford is asking for two first round picks for the likes of Tim Gleason, Tuomo Ruutu or Jaro Spacek, then Rutherford deserves a barrage of calls from rival GM’s, who do nothing but laugh into the phone with a cruel and taunting laugh ….. but …. You never know, especially when you have the likes of a Paul Holmgren out there …. Remember what Holmgren traded for Kris Versteeg last year ? A first and third round pick, for a guy who was a total dud …. There have been times when GM’s throw away draft picks like it is going out of style, the value of first rounders always fluctuates, but it is a huge gamble …. Brian Burke looks to have been lucky with Phil Kessel , to a degree, but Kessel had shown talent in the NHL …. Of course, Tyler Seguin now looks like a better player ….. Interesting to see where Rutherford’s players go, and if he finds any suckers to give him what he wants … - With things quiet in the NHL, a few notes from the CHL …. In the Western League, nobody is on pace to put up any wild point totals, though a couple players could finish with some nice goal totals if they maintain their pace …. Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers has 41 goals in 42 games, and Ty Rattie in Portland has 42 goals in 46 games … the Edmonton Oil Kings are putting together a good year, as are the Moose Jaw Warriors, the Tri City Americans, Portland WInterHawks, and the Kamloops Blazers, a dynasty in the 1990’s, are having a solid year ….. Jan 25 - All Star break …… if we had to pick Stanley Cup finalists right now, it would be the big, bad Bruins taking on the Detroit Red Wings …. And to pick a winner from that pair, the Bruins would have to be the favorites … - Best Player so far this year : A couple of guys have been in and out of this slot, so lets split this one between Phil the Thrill, Claude Giroux and Evgeni Malkin … - Best Goalie : Tim Thomas. Done Deal. Only thing that will change this is if Hank Lundquist and his huge equipment win a Stanley Cup, then, and only then, do Lundquist’ pads, blocker, trapper and miscellaneous other inflated gear get any credit … - Best Coach : Mike Babcock gets overlooked because he coaches the Winged Wheel, but he needs to be acknowledged year in and year out ….. along with him, Paul MacLean in Ottawa and Ken Hitchcock in St Louis have made undeniable differences in their team’s performance … - Of course, anyone watching the Habs whip the Wings last night would have trouble believing the above scenario ….. not often that the Wings mail in a lazy effort like that …. Habs fans have something to cheer about for a while …. Montreal 7 Detroit 2 …… like Steve Kouleas’ take on the performance of David Desharnais, the Habs small guy who is doing big things for the Habs, in which Kouleas states that Desharnais is doing what Ankleskater Gomez had his agent say that he would do …. Question for Donald Fehr and the nhlpa : Is Anklesater Gomez giving back all that money he has defrauded the Rangers and Canadiens of by having his agent represent him as something he isn’t ? Gomez has not lived up to his end of that contract. He should not get paid the full sum ….. maybe a quarter of the deals value, at best, and even that is a stretch …. - Interesting column from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, in which he rips NHL officials …. Two ways to look at this : First, as sour grapes, or else as calling a spade as a spade ….. Brennan looks at the problem from an Ottawa Senator perspective, so many will say his is a case of sour grapes …. From a larger perspective, though, the quality of officiating needs to be addressed. The zebras mess up constantly, everyone knows it, the blown calls are shown almost immediately on the arena big screens and in people’s homes, and you have a ref skating around like he never makes a mistake, yet they often cost teams dearly, changing the outcome of games with erroneous calls …. Time to fix this problem, and it is an easy fix …. Get two officials off the ice. With four guys out there, they are constantly in the way. Use off ice video and off ice officials to monitor the game, have them communicate with the on ice crew by headset, and get the calls right, at least on a far more consistent basis …. - Most interesting trade rumors right now are easily the Jeff Carter stories ….looks like he will be dealt from Columbus, and where to ? Tell ya right now, the LA Kings will be looking, as will Brian Burke and the Leaves …. Probably everyone except the Flyers, the bankrupt Devils and Coyotes …. Who wouldn’t be interested in the guy should have played in the last Olympics over Patrice Bergeron, and who is a proven sniper and big body presence ? The x factor with Carter is his injury history, which isn’t all that bad when you look at his games played over his career, except that he gets hurt when his team really needs him … for Columbus, that has been all year … - Just have to laugh at the idea of the Canadiens trading PK Subban …. But that is what you get from the Montreal media ….. Subban is the closest thing the Habs have to an impact player, and some guy at Le Presse figures they should deal him ? …. That being said, don’t put it past lame duck Pierre Gauthier …. - If Steve Tambellini isn’t smart enough to deal Ales Hemsky now, the Oilers might as well can Tambellini, and Kevin Lowe with him ….. the team has been a doormat every year since their flukey, yes, flukey, call it what it was, run to the Stanley Cup Final all those years back against Carolina …. ( one blip against years of losing is a fluke ) …. After this season, the Oilers will have two playoff appearances in the last decade, including 6 straight years of not getting into the ultimate tournament …. The mainstay has been Kevin Lowe. Look at his personnel moves. He doesn’t have a clue what he is doing, who to keep, or who to move. Tambellini has made a few moves, but hasn’t been able to do anything astute or major to improve the team. Sorry, but picking kids like Hall and the Nuge first overall don’t count as brilliant decisions. A 6 year old hockey fan could make the same move. Credit Tambellinin with bringing in Ryan Jones, who might be a good captain after they manage to rid themselves of Shawn Horcoff …. Ryan Whitney was a gamble that hasn’t paid off. Whitney is good when healthy, but that is hit and miss. Tambellini had to understand that risk …. Bottom line is this : The Oilers have been a losing team for years, and Tambellini has not asserted himself in any significant manner to change that. Same with Kevin Lowe. Good times are ahead, but not from the moves of these two guys … - Best fight in a long time was Chris Stewart pull-starting Brad Stuart …. A great scrap between two actual full time players. What makes this scrap so good ? Sometimes a decisive victory is a good thing, and in this tilt, the tough and talented Chris Stewart tuned up the Wings versatile defender ….. - Best format of the cbc Satelite Hotstove is with no Mad Mike Milbury ….. after that, best format is the way it was done last Saturday, with everybody in their own city, with the split screen talking heads ….. to reiterate, MacLean hosting with Eric Francis and Elliotte Friedman is a good start, and to place Al Strachan or Pierre LeBrun , maybe Stephen Brunt on the panel would really set up a good discussion …. - Best hockey discussion / program that is most missed was the old “ 10 Minute Misconduct “ on the Score …. That channel really dropped the ball on hockey coverage …. - So Brian Burke hands Ron Wilson a contractextension, and the Leafs quickly fall out of the top 8 in the Eastern Conference ….. now Burke gives journeyman defenseman John Michael Liles and 4 year extension approaching $4 mill per annum ….. ???? …. It is acknowledged that Burke is trying, but his history of moves is not kind to him ….. Burke remains the most over rated GM in the league, and it is because of decisions and moves like the above that he is doubted …. Every move in the league has to be measured against the moves made by Ken Holland, and Hollnad hasn’t been throwing money at mediocre defenseman during the middle of the year, so lets call this a mistake on Burke’s part ….. Open Ice Hitter – Pure Hockey Jan 20-21 - Goal of the Night : Nashville d-man Kevin Klein flips the puck in toward the Chicago net from the centre ice red line ….. and would you believe he scores ?? Yup. Corey Crawford, and all that huge equipment could not stop a little dump in …. Embarrassing for Crawford, who dresses in such massive gear that he looks like a lacrosse goalie … - Marquee Matchup : Rangers top the Bruins in Boston … the Rangers dream season continues, but let’s see what happens come playoff time … - Toronto’s Leaves sit in 9th spot …. It is going to be dicey for the Leaves to get into the playoffs. The momentum from that awesome start is long gone … losing to the Habs doesn’t help their cause. Letting the Ankleskater Gomez collect a point against them ? Brutal … - How can anyone cheer for the Islanders when they wear those awful, hideous, ugly black jerseys ? Those are the worst uniforms in the league …. John Tavares deserves to wear something better than that. Stick with the classic Isles jerseys that harken back to the glory days in Nassau Coliseum, back in the late 70’s and early 80’s … Isles took a win from Carolina in a battle of basement dwellars, Tavares scored twice … - Another sketchy play by a Detroit Red Wing, as Hank Zetterberg pushed Columbus d-man Nikita Nikitin into the boards, with Nikitin looking like Al McInnis when big Al broke his hips … brutal and dangerous play by Zetterberg, but hey, when you play for the Wings, you can do as you please. Nobody ever gets sat down when they wear the winged wheel …. Target guys heads, break their wrists with a vicious slash, no big deal … This is emerging as Brendan Shanahan’s weakness. Shanahan has proven to be far more competent than old Colin Campbell … a little media pressure will probably get Shanahan straightened out. Question is, anyone in the big media or tv spots have the cojones to say anything ? - In Philly, the Flyers continue to be brutalized by injuries …. The latest being Daniel Briere, after he was crushed by Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov …. Going back to they eye injury that put an early end to the career of Bernie Parent, the Flyers have been ravaged by injuries to key players. Tim Kerr, Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, Simon Gane, Eric Desjardins, even Pelle Lindbergh had injury issues …. Is it the curse of the Broad Street Bullies ? Anyway, the Flyers are having a decent year after such a wild summer …. Let’s see what kind of crazy move Paul Holmgren makes in his play to land Ryan Suter or Shea Weber … - You just know that Ken Holland is planning his moves for the trade deadline and the summer free agency period. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. Those are two players that could very well end up in Detroit. The Wings are set to lose Tomas Holmstrom, and eventually Nik Lidstrom, to retirement. They need some elite players to keep the Winged Wheel rolling. Holland has been the best GM in the game for a while now. Let’s see how handles things over the next 6 months … - Good times in Edmonton a few months back, when the Oil were winning and sitting atop the Western Conference … reality has set in, and injuries have not helped …. A loss to the Flames is salt in the wound, but things are different in Edmonton now. They have real talent in the fold. Hall, Eberle, the Nuge. These players will make a huge difference moving forward. What Steve Tambellini does with the rest of the team will make the difference. Move Ales Hemsky – he will bring a decent return, as far as a legit current NHL player who can help now. Hemsky has been an enigma during his entire career. Might as well move him. Some GM’s will still see him as a gamebreaker, which he isn’t. Tambellini missed the opportunity to trade Sam Gagner when some hockey folks still thought Gagner was an up and coming elite player. He might be abe to move Gagner now, but in all honesty, Gagner is viewed as a lower tier second line center at best, and he is currently filling that role fairly well for the Oilers ….. Edmonton need to upgrade the blueline, as they can’t count on Ryan Whitney being healthy … - Interesting analysis of the Buffalo Sabres by Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe …. Dupont cites Jeremy Roenick’s call to either tradegoalie Whine Miller, fire coach Lindy Ruff or GM Darcy Regier …. Dupont points to the failures of the Sabres to do anything in the playoffs over the past 4 years, plus the disappointing season they are having …. With an owner stepping in and spending money, this team was expected to be a contender. Now they are in a fight to get into the playoffs … maybe it is time for a change. Trading Whine Miller would be the biggest gamble – he could be a difference maker if he can get his attitude straightened out … - Goal of the Night 2 : Have to go with the Lee Stempniak wrister, one of his three goals, as the Flames beat Edmonton, 6-2. Stempniak took aim at the Oiler net from the left wing area, firing a laser behind Nik Khabibulin, a textbook snipe …. - Hit of the Day : Bruin d-man Steven Kampfer basically skates into the shoulder of Flyer rookie Brayden Schenn … seriously, Schenn was skating toward Kampfer on the forecheck, and the Bruin basically impaled himself on Schenn’s shoulder. The collision left Kampfer wiped out, and Schenn had to drop the mitts with Chris Kelly …. The Bruins managed to salvage a win in the sham shootout …. As for the Flyers, they are playing mediocre hockey, and dropping games to the Bruins and Rangers on a regular basis …. - One of the most under rated players in the NHL : Brian Boyle of the Rangers. Los Angeles gave up on the hulking forward, but Boyle has been solid in his time with the Rangers …. A huge presence, solid both ways, and can score …. - Alex Ovechkin has moved up to 38th spot in the NHL scoring race, with an average of .83 pts per game …. Anyway you look at Ovie’s play this year, it is disappointing. The guy is a beast of a man, a physical specimen, and looked so driven and opportunistic up until the last two years. Is it that he is too simplistic of a player, not understanding the game ? Hope the Great 8 can regain his past form, but it isn’t looking likely at this point … - The league standings are starting to get straightened out, but one team not stalling or freefalling is Ottawa … this is great for coach Paul MacLean, who came to fame as a mustachioed scoring winger for the old Winnipeg Jets …. It might be bad news for Senator fans though, as Bryan Murray will keep his job, which is bad long term for the Senators …. A rebound year from Jason Spezza, a breakout year by Milan Michalek, and better than expected play from youngsters like Zach Smith have keyed the Sens victories ….. Murray deserves little credit for the stellar year … - If the Flyers do end up dealing any of their young prospects or young studs – that would include Schenn, Couturier, Van Riemsdyk or Matt Read – for a top d-man, Paul Holmgren needs to be canned. Ever notice how Ken Holland gets the stud players he wants without moving key players or prospects ? The Flyers are desperate for a Cup win, and every other GM in the league knows it. Holmgren has been making terrible deals of late, and to be honest, the Flyers success this year has been surprising …. If you are a Flyer fan, beware of some kind of nightmare deal, like Couturier for Tim Gleason, or as rumored, a stunningly foolish deal like JVR for Luke Schenn … - With the New Jersey Devils financial collapse, or that of the team owner, the deal for Ilya Kovalchuk looks even worse … they brought him in for name recognition, and to be a gamebreaker. Kovalchuk-Grossman has been okay, but he has not been a superstar … his presence could very likely mean the departure of team captain, and a far better player, Zach Parise … - Not impressed with the NHL for giving in to the nhlpa regarding the money handed to the league to run the Phoenix Coyotes … the tail is really wagging the dog now, and the league need to crack down hard on the nhlpa …. I don’t mind spending money on my favorite sport and the best sports league in the world, but if the nhlpa start calling too many shots, the greed factor will get ridiculous, and us fans will eventually put a limit on how much cash we funnel into the NHL and its players …. - Maybe the wildest rumor regarding the upcoming trade deadline is one printed by Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun …. Garrioch suggests that the Columbus Blue Jackets will deal prized summer acquisition Jeff Carter at or before the deadline … Garrioch is a long time scribe, no doubt with connections, so this rumor cant be idly dismissed …. Guess we shall see where that rumor goes …. Jan 18 - With the Washington Capitals reclaiming first place in the Southeast Division, the NHL standings look a lot more in line with pre-season expectations of the Caps. Washington blanked the Habs 3-0 in their classic Capitals home whites, moving back into top spot in the Southeast, and dropping Dale Tallon’s upstart Florida Panthers to 8th spot in the East … Ovechkin has showed flashes of his past brilliance and dominance over the past few weeks …. - Goal of the Night : Marcus Johanssen fires a long wrister into the top corner against Carey Price after a slick little move, feigning a move to the outside against the Hab defenseman before using him as a screen for his shot …. Price never saw the puck. An All Star calibre goalie should have been expecting something like that … though Price has emerged as a legit NHL starting goalie, he continues to be over rated … - The BlackHawks clobbered the Sabres 6-2 in what is shaping up to be a disappointing season for the Sabres. Hard times for Sabre hockey fans, huh ? They get an owner with deep pockets, he opens the check book, GM Darcy Regier brings in some high price players, and the team flounders …. Ville Leino has been a bust, Christian Erhoff is still as soft as he was in Vancouver, and though Robyn Regher is doing his thing, playing a consistent and physical game, the team has not been very good. The biggest problem ? Star goalie Ryan Miller has lost focus, and is playing weak hockey. He has spouted off to the media several times on different topics, but has not been able to do the job he is paid millions to do. There is the scapregoat Sabre fans are looking for …. - If the Colorado Avalanche manage to sneak into the playoffs, the year is a success. It was nice to see Peter Mueller have a big game, 2 goals and an assist, after the injury problems he has dealt with ( concussion issues ) …. The former Everett Silvertip star was a highly touted prospect coming out of the Western Hockey League, but was dealt out of Phoenix …. - On that note, the Coyotes can’t really afford to be dealing away many more top prospects … Kyle Turris gone, Peter Mueller gone, Blake Wheeler gone …. Hard to build a winner when decent picks are moved or lost …. The Coyotes do not have a gamebreaker first round pick of their own in the lineup … - Awesome quote from Darryl Sutter regarding the gnarly cut Taylor Hall suffered to his noggin in warmups the other night … In a media scrum, Sutter was asked about players wearing helmets for warmups, if it needs to ne mandated …. The gruff Alberta farmer responded by saying the players can wear wigs and sunglasses, he doesn’t care, as long as they are ready to go when the game starts. Sutter also pointed out that it is an isolated incident . Thank You. The mainstream media contains those people that love to whip any incident into a big deal …. Sometimes a bit of perspective, as provided by Mr Sutter, is needed …. - Stanley Cup contenders, realistically, as of late Janvier ….definitely the defending champions, the Boston Bruins. Have to be the frontrunners. Also, the Chicago BlackHawks. Chicago added some muscle and grit, good news for them, bad news for the Vancouver Faker – Divers. Lets go with those two teams as frontrunners. Next, have to acknowledge the strong season from the New York Rangers, and the ever present Detroit Red Wings. New York is having a dream season, but when you get looking at the team, you wonder about depth, and the success they are enjoying seems a bit beyond what their roster seems capable of. Teams like that often crash in the playoffs. See the last few editions of the Phoenix Coyotes for case studies. The Wings only question mark is in goal. They are proven everywhere else. Detroit is a legit contender. After those teams, the San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers are slotted well up the standings board, and are perennially in the conversation. Both teams made radical changes in the summer, but are still winning. Come playoff time, both will be wild cards. They could be first round busts, or go to the Final. The Vancouver Faker-Divers are winning again, but still have that wormy feel and culture to the team, plus Luongo in net. The Canucks deserve to be mentioned and acknowledged for their regular season success, but does anyone outside of the diehard Canuck fanbase really think the team can win Lord Stanley’s grail ? Any kind of karma or mojo the Canucks had was used up last year. Can’t see them getting another shot with the current lineup. Too many actors, babies, whiners, etc …. Any team not mentioned is a darkhorse at this point, including pre season faves from Washington and Los Angeles … Jan 14 - Crazy rumor coming out of Toronto or Philly, depending on which source you listen to …. Paul Holmgren, the mad man, talking to Brian Burke, regarding James Van Riemsdyk becoming a Toronto Maple Leaf, with Luke Schenn going back to Philly … supposedly, the Leaves would have to throw in another player….. Anyway you look at it, if Holmgren deals Van Riemsdyk, the amount of talent dealt out of Philly recently becomes staggering. Accomplished and or high end first rounders leaving the team ….. It has to be acknowledged that Van Riemsdyk has not met expectations this year, but the kid is still young, and is very likely to be a high impact and dominant player in the near future. Of course Brian Burke wants him. Luke Schenn is a decent young d-man, but not likely to be an elite blueliner. He is a solid player, and could become a shutdown defender, but is not ever going to be a gamebreaker from the back end. Picking up a player like Grabovski in the deal would not justify trading Van Riemsdyk …. Holmgren has been a mad scientist over the past year, with his team staying at the same level …. Van Riemsdyk suffering a concussion should scuttle this rumor for the near future … - Former Saskatoon Blade Colton Gillies has been picked up by the Columbus Bue Jackets …. A new team should benefit Gillies, a kid who works hard, a gifted skater. If he is given the opportunity, he would be a solid third line player. Hope it works out for him with the Blue Jackets … - Need to clarify an issue …. Some teams really catch it on the site, like the Vancouver Faker-Divers. What a classless bunch of worms. But when a team turns it around, or start to turn it around, and deserve some credit, they get it here as well. That would be the Edmonton Oilers. They were awful for a few years, and had some goofy hype around them, like when they were the up and coming Oilers, thanks to Sam Gagner ( called Twerp at the time ), Andrew Cogliano, and Tom Gilbert …. That obviously did not pan out. It was ridiculous to think it would. However, now that the Oil have legitimate prospects and young star players, and have put Gagner into an appropriate role, a 2nd or 3rd line center, the team has a lot of promise, and that has been noted. If your team gets slagged by Open Ice Hitter, well, hard times, for certain. But when that team gets its act together, acknowledgement will follow …. For the Vancouver Faker-Divers, that will come when they get some character, and quit making like summer Olympians on the high dive platform, or like an actor in an action show, with the head snaps and dramatic falls …. - When Angelo Esposito was 16 years old, he was a running mate of Alexander Radulov with the Quebec Remparts, and won a Memorial Cup…. From that point on, things have been a struggle. He fell dramatically in his draft year after being considered a possible top pick. Injuries slowed him down. He was able to play for Canada at the WJC, and win a Gold medal, but after that, had more injury issues …. Since leaving the junior ranks, he has been traded several times. Initially a Penguin draft pick, he was dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers, then Florida, and now to Dallas …. - Rick Dipietro to undergo surgery, done for the year ….. If it wasn’t for bad luck, he would have any luck at all, so the saying goes ….. unreal. Wonder what his career would have been like had he ever stayed healthy …. Other injuries of note : Dan Carcillo, done for the year in Chicago, and Nik Backstrom, concussion, sidelined in Washington ….. brutal year for injuries … Jan 12 - Habs deal Chicken Turd Cammaleri to the Flames for Rene Bourque …. Sooo … what are the Habs up to ? They bring in Tomas Kaberle because they need production from the back end … Kaberle looked great for his first couple games as a Hab, but has been normal and crappy Kaberle of late …. Now they deal Cammaleri to Calgary for Rene Bourque …. Are they freeing up cap space ? If so, why did they acquire Kaberle ? Does Pierre Gauthier have a clue about anything ? Okay, to stir things up in regards to who won this trade, most “ experts “ are saying Cammaleri is the best player, so the Flames win the deal …. Hold On a minute …. Cammaleri has the one big year at 39 goals, he also has a 34 goal season …. Other than that, he has seasons of 26, 19, 26 and 19 goals …. Bourque has two 27 goal seasons, a year in which he scored 21 goals in 58 games, which would translate to a 30 plus goal year, this year he is on pace for around 25 goals … Cammaleri is on pace for just under 20 … Bourque has a far greater physical impact … who is the better player ? Hmmm … lets see how this plays out … Does Cammaleri ever get anywhere close to 34 goals again, let alone the 39 he bagged in his previous Calgary stint …. Can’t see it happening …. As for Bourque, who hails from one of the truly diverse regions of Canada, in the Lac La Biche, Alberta area, all the best to him in Montreal ….. - Better address the Chicken Turd Cammaleri comments regarding how the Habs are a bunch of losers – of course that is why he was dealt the next day. Wouldn’t be surprised to hear that a few fist fights occurred in the Hab dressing room involving Cammaleri after those comments. His comments would have angered at least a few teammates, and you better believe teammates scrap in the dressing room from time to time. We are talking about proud athletes here, guys with very healthy self images and egos. That is why they are successful athletes. Being called losers would ruffle some feathers in the room , and definitely in the front office. Diehard fans would be appalled. - If not for divisional placement as the three seed, the Florida Panthers would sit in sixth place …. Bad mouth the Southeast division all you want, but that is going to be a tight race come April … Winnipeg ( yup, Southeast Division next year too, thank you nhlpa wizards ) and Washington will factor into this, and Tampa might get their act together at some point - Have to credit Bob Luongo with a solid game in a Western Conference showdown between the Faker-Divers and the resurgent Blues …. Luongo made some key saves, helping the Canucks pick up another W …. The zebras also helped out a lot, too, especially with that overtime penalty against the Blues …. Combine that with a bizarre decision by TJ Oshie to go to the bench for a stick, and you have a Vancouver win … - Important note on the Vancouver Faker-Divers … they have played 45 games. 5 more than Boston and San Jose, and 4 more than the Rangers …. Just like last year, when they had played more games than the other elite teams ….. use winning percentage as opposed to total points when determining who is the best team at this point of the season ….. Jan 8 - Another shaky game from Ilya Bryzgalov, Philly blow a 4-2 lead in the third, and the Sens take a game from the Flyers, 6-4 ….. the Senators really woke up in the third frame, but how does a team that wants to call itself a contender blow a 2 goal lead in the third period ? Against a team of kids and overacheivers at that ? Seems like nothing changes in Philly as far as goaltending goes …. Bryzgalov has been anything but consistent … what does Philly have to do to get reliable goaltending ? - Dumb comment from Alain Vigneault regarding the cut down delivered to Sami Salo by rat Brad Marchand …. Yes, Marchand is a rat, even though he is an effective player who knows how to find the net … for the coach of a team that has so many fakers, so many divers, and a few well known cheap artists, Vigneault should not be making any comments about somebody wanting to hurt Marchand at some point …. No surprise that Sami Salo is hurt, supposedly concussed, after Marchand wiped him out. Salo is one of the most fragile players the league has ever seen … - Perfect example of how poor the quality of officiating is in the NHL - the goal by Dan Cleary, assisted by Valteri Filppula of the Red Wings … at the side of the Chicago net, Filppula crosschecks a BlackHawk defenseman in the lower back, wiping out the defender, directly in front of a referee. Vicious shot, blatant, should have been a Red Wing penalty …. But no, the idiot ref stands there with his thumb up his butt, Detroit score and tie the game ….. this game also featured another Nik Kronwall blindside hit on a player, with Kronwall going airborne to hit the player ….. Detroit continue to enjoy the advantage of the referees on most nights …. - Jeff Carter out with a separated shoulder …. Coming out of the OHL following a stellar career in the Soo, Carter was a can’t miss prospect, expected to have a big impact for the Flyers …and in all fairness, Carter was an elite player. When healthy. Not that he missed a staggering amount of games, but it hasn’t been unusual for him to be hurt, or play hurt …. Injuriues have really limited his effectiveness in Columbus … Jan 7 - Jarome Iginla . 500 Goals. Iggy has been the face of the Calgary Flames since Theo FLeury left town … always with a big smile, a total class act, and a solid presence on the ice …. Scoring 500 goals in the NHL is a huge accomplishment. Hats off to a world class athlete, and hope he scores a few more … - Game of the Night : The Vancouver Faker-Divers paid a visit to Boston, first time since getting taken apart in Beantown three times last spring, if you know what I mean ….. the Bruins destroyed the Faker-Divers in the three Stanley Cup games played in the “Gaadun”, in particular, humiliating the super sensitive and egotistical Roberto Luongo …. Anyways, Luongo was stapled to the bench for this game, replaced by Corey Schneider, and it turned out well for Vancouver, winning 4-3 … a spirited game, to be sure, with the Bruins pushing some buttons, and the refs protecting the Vancouver squad … didn’t like the Lucic ejection … where were the dough head officials as 5 Faker-Divers jumped on Scott Thornton ? As usual, awful job by the refs, and can’t blame Lucic for going to the aid of a teammate in a scrum against a team known for dangerous and wormy antics …. - Have to give credit to Cody Hodgson, who is really beginning to emerge in Vancouver … he scored a wicked goal in the Canuck win, a howitzer of a slapshot. Hodgson had issues with injuries to start his NHL career, but has persevered and earned his time in the NHL. If he can avoid being poisoned by the Faker-Divers on the team, and the lack of character, he could become a true leader, something Vancouver lack, and desperately need if they are ever going to win a Stanley Cup … - Good to hear the NCAA is considering giving players the option of wearing a half shield visor. One of the problems in sport today is the feeling of invincibility the players have. Make this happen, treat the players like adults … and next up, carve down the size of the goalie equipment … - The league badly needs to change the format for All Star voting by fans ….. one vote per IP address would make some sense … Of this year’s starters, Milan Michalek, Tim Thomas and Erik Karlsson can be justified as being atop the All Star heap ….. Alfreddson, Phaneuf and Spezza, I don’t think so. The idea is nice, let the fans vote, but to let them rig the vote ruins the concept …. One vote per person / IP address makes the idea a bit more legit … - Hey, brilliant idea for the solid and classy folks at the smelly and rotten nhlpa …. Every game can be a home game !! Yeah, every team plays every game at home !!! Wait a minute, that won’t work ….. but hey, we are the nhlpa, and we don’t care about anything except me, me, me,me and my wallet …. - On a more serious note : the nhlpa are losers and worms. A prime example of what is wrong in labor relations in the Western world. Sports agents and unions are sickening. Nauseating. All they represent is greed and selfishness. - If the owners don’t let the players go to Sochi for the 2016 Olympics, they will receive the same type of criticism over the issue as the nhlpa usually receive on their stupid and selfish stance on most issues … having the best hockey players in the Olympics is in everyone’s best interests. Allowing Europeans to watch the very best players is the best advertising the NHL could ask for. Hopefully the league and the team owners are intelligent enough to see this … - If Brian Burke really is a smart hockey man, and Ryan Getzlaf really is available, then Burke needs to make this happen : Package up basically whatever Bob Murray wants – offload Kadri, Tyler Bozak, Jeff Finger, Komisarek, basically whoever Murray wants. Murray won’t ask for Lupul, and to be realistic, a few guys can’t be dealt right now. They would be Phaneuf, Kessel, Joe Colbourne, and ….. that’s it. Hang on to Keith Aulie if you can, but every other player on the Leaf roster should be considered fair game for a package to land Ryan Getzlaf … - - Jan 6 - Congrats to Sverige for their Gold medal win at the 2012 WJC in Calgary ….. Ottawa Senator first round pick Mike Zibenajad claimed Gold for the Swedes with his overtime tally, giving the Swedes their first Gold at the tournament in 3 decades ….. extremely interesting how badly the Swedes outshot their opponents in almost every game, yet had trouble bulging the twine …. Outshoot the Russkies 22-1 in period two, and not score ?? Bizarre …. Anyway, when the smoke cleared, Sverige had the biggest prize, Russia settled for Silver, and Canada claimed Bronze with a 4-0 shutout of the Finns ….. - Canada have now gone three tournaments without a Gold. You better believe the heat will be on to win next year. Four years without Gold is not acceptable, not when you have as many hockey players and resources dedicated to the game as Canada does. The Maple Leaf now need to go on another 4 or 5 year run of nothing but Gold, or Canadian hockey fans will start to voice their displeasure …. - Soooo ….. Don Fehr wants to play games, huh ? What a worm. And what an insult to the common folk that drive and fund the game of hockey. Travel schedule of an NHL player is too hard on them ? Flying everywhere executive class and staying in 5 star hotels is too hard on the players ? …. Hmmmm ….. any notion that the union cares about the playoff structure is laughable. The union management care only about how many zeroes are tacked on behind the first digits of their paycheque. If you don’t think so, then have a few discussions with them … look, we all know what Fehr is doing. Anything he can use to disrupt the NHL, he is going to use. Regardless of how unethical, immoral, unreasonable or wrong it is. He will do it. That is what labour lawyers do. They screw people around. They are greedy, and manipulative. Yup, just like many owners / businessmen. No sense being naïve here. The big issue with the union / labour lawyer is that they misrepresent themselves, claiming to be “ fighting for the worker “ … whatever. They don’t care about anything except their own wealth. Which is funny, since that is what they criticize the business owner for. The team owners here are not pretending to be something they are not – they all want to make millions. Fair enough. And they happen to make all the players rich in the process. Fine. But what the nhlpa are doing, that isn’t fine. The tail wants to wag the dog. They want to keep making more money, more millions for the likes of Scott Gomez, Jeff Finger, Jason Blake, and other slackers …. At the cost of the fan. Now the nhlpa want to tell the NHL how to run their business. They want to run the league, too, huh ? Tell the league owners how to organize the conferences or divisions. How to schedule the games. Here is a word to the NHL owners – crush this union. Crush it hard. Destroy it. As a fan, it disgusts me what the nhlpa does, and what it stands for. Selfishness. Greed. Entitlement. Zero accountability. NHL players make so much money now, and have such an easy life of privilege and wealth, that they can’t even be bothered to put on the Canada Cup, or World Cup, call it what you want, the tournament formerly held to raise money for the players pension fund, and followed fanatically by the fanatical fans, like me. Open Ice Hitter has been calling for this tournament for years, but the players and their agents are too busy counting their money …… things are way out of whack in sports unions. Lets get things straightened out. Put the players union in its place. Time for performance based pay, and destruction of the nhlpa. When the lawyers and agents who run the nhlpa have brainwashed veteran players so badly into going along with the idea that first class travel and 5 star hotels create too hard of a life, then it is time for a reality check. - Scathing article by Joe Haggerty regarding Luongo’s place on the bench as the Canucks head into Boston for the first time since the 2011 Stanley Cup final, in which the Bruins humiliated Luongo. Remember ? Luongo sprawled out on his stomach, surrendering goal after goal, as the Bruins and their fans cheered another tally ? Luongo whining about not getting any compliments from Tim Thomas ….. that kind of stuff … Haggerty nails it when he questions Luongo’s character ….. http://www.csnne.com/blog/bruins-talk/post/Haggerty-More-weak-sauce-from-Luongo?blockID=626624&feedID=3944 - Goal of the Night : In a rare Anaheim win, Bobby Ryan swoops in on goal, gracefully weaving through Islander defencemen, before reaching around Evgeni Nabokov, who was down and committed in the butterfly, and slides the puck into the net for a goal that looked so easy to score ….. looks are often deceiveing … - Brian Burke is an interesting guy, well educated, likes the spotlight, outspoken, etc, etc ….. but he is all over the map with his latest tirade. Burke is given too much credit as smart hockey guy … he has done well during his career in management, but that is likely due more to the fact that he manages personal politics well, as opposed to him being a genius when it comes to running a team. His little rant about “ rats “ and having to send Colton Orr to the minors was a total eyebrow raiser. Want the bottom line on fighting and safety in the NHL ? Call the rules as they are laid out in the rulebook. As it is, refs pick and choose what rules to enforce, and what players to penalize. There is zero uniformity in how the rules are applied. Just call the rules the way they are written, apply them the same to all players. That will make a huge difference. Call every charge, crosscheck and hook you see. After a few months of ridiculously high penalty numbers, the players will figure out to play within the rules. And take the suggestion of Mike Brophy, limiting ice time and availability of one dimensional fighters, like Colton Orr. Nothing against Orr as a person, but he is not a legit NHL hockey player. He is a legit bareknuckle hockey fighter. Two very different things. Leave the fighting to the actual players. That is how the game can actually police itself. You are always going to have players pushing the limits, and those guys can spend some quality time in the sin bin, and occasionally dropping the mitts. Guys like Orr, though, they aren’t legit NHL hockey players. When Orr fights Jody Shelley, it is not a part of the game. It is a sideshow. Yes, I get up and watch with fascination when two huge guys slug it out in the most primal of contests known to humanknd. An awesome display of strength and technique is what heavyweight fights in the NHL are. But they are still a sideshow. Now, Milan Lucic beating the tar out of Mike Komisarek, or Derek Dorsett dropping the mitts with Taylor Hall, those are actual unscripted, real, and spontaneous disagreements between hockey players. Bad judgement on Hall’s part, yes, but both scenario’s had real full time NHL players scrapping, and the intimidation factor was settled, with Lucic imposing his will on Komisarek, and Hall learning that he is not a fighter. Burke has found himself going in a few different directions on this issue. It isn’t that complicated. Put together a team of hockey players, put them on the ice, and actually enforce the rules the same way for every team. Want to cut down on concussions? The penalty is called charging. Use it. Open Ice Hitter loves the huge open ice demolitions, but they do hurt people. Sometimes they are legal checks. Sometimes one player takes 15 strides and charges across the ice intending to hurt another player. That is a Patrick Kaleta specialty. It is called charging, and intent to injure. Call it that way. Jan 4 - Russia needed the big names to perform against Team Canada, and did they ever come through … Evgeni Kuznetsov buried the Canadians with a monster showing, the second year in a row that the smooth Russian forward stepped up to ruin Team Canada’s chances at Gold …. Nail Yakupov seized the moment as well, playing the role of setup man … Canada outplayed the Russians badly to open the game, but after 20 minutes the Russians led 2-0. The difference was the Russians being able to score when they had the opportunity, while Canada could not capitalize on their opportunities. Russia got spectacular goaltending from Andrei Vasilevski for most of the game, while Scott Wedgewood failed to deliver the huge performance Canada has been wanting from a goalie in the WJC since Steve Mason led the team to a Gold medal …. As for any suggestion that officiating cost Canada this game, that idea can be dismissed by acknowledging that the referee’s where in fact horrible, but their delusional calls did not give one team a favor over the other. The blind bats were terrible for both teams, as is often the case. The game is too fast, and has passed the on-ice referee, leaving them to look like fools, especially when the video replay shows what really happened seconds later …. Things looked ugly in the third period, when Canada trailed 6-1, with the team looking like it was ready to come completely unravelled. Credit to the team for rallying to close the gap to 6-5, and hitting another goalpost, something Team Canada specialized in during the game …. This is not one of those years in which Team Canada management need to be criticized for poor player selection. They have a good mix of skill and size, and the only player who could be looked on as the coach’s boy, Brendan Gallagher, played alright, and is an accomplished scorer in the WHL. This isn’t the same thing as old Stan Butler taking his Brampton hacks, or having Casey Cizikas on the team last year while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins watched from Red Deer. The personnel on this edition of the team was okay, they just hit a Russian team that was ready for a huge challenge … - The Sweden – Finland game was another matter …horrid reffing helped sink the Finns, giving the Swedes some timely power plays …. And failing to give the Finns any calls, even though the Finns should have had an overtime powerplay ….. that coupled with Finnish goalie Aittokallio making a bad decision in trying to clear a puck, and Mikael Granlund mis-handling the biscuit during the shootout, and you have a bitterly disappointed Finland squad, a team that led the Swedes 2-0 heading into the third period …. - So, Tre Kronor versus the Bear in the Gold medal game ….Sweden has not won this game in 30 years …. Odds are that they should buck the trend, but who knows? The Swedish goalie has not been an All Star by any stretch of the imagination, and for all the Swedes shots, they aren’t bulging the twine much …. The Russians have been very opportunistic over the past two tournaments, and Vasilevski made some awesome saves against Canada …. Just watch the game … - The NHL is full on again, and the standings are starting to see some corrections …. For example, the Kings now lead the Pacific Division, and sit as the third seed in the West. Thank You Darryl Sutter. It needs to be said that the Kings would sit in the eight seed if not for leading their division, but it looks like the spot most thought the Kings would occupy …. Minnesota have fallen down the standings, as have the Leaves … Detroit lead the league in wins, and Vancouver have moved into second spot in the West, though that also needs an asterisk, as they have played 5 more games than San Jose …. The fact that the number of games played by teams can vary so much at times during the year really throws a kink into the standings, one that is rarely mentioned by sportscasters … - Tough year for the Columbus Blue Jackets to be a frontrunner to pick first overall …of course, the Ducks are taking a run at that honor as well … anyway, the Jackets have not had any luck with high first round picks and Russian players. Think Nikita Filatov and Nikolai Zherdev …. So this year, the consensus top pick is thought to be Russian Nail Yakupov …. A few things on Yakupov, namely that he came to Canada to play in the OHL with the Sarnia Sting, and his agent is Igor Larionov … Are those signs of commitment to success and professionalism … Larionov was the consummate pro during his time in the NHL, and deserves respect as an agent for a number of reasons - he played on several teams without causing a fuss, and he came from a vastly different background than players and most agents come from, namely communist / big brother-style Soviet society … maybe Yakupov starts a new trend for Russian players in how they prepare for a shot at the NHL … maybe the Blue Jackets finally get the smooth Russian ace they have been looking for … - Just when it looked like Tampa were ready to make a charge up the standings, and the Leafs were in free-fall mode, Toronto lay a dirty lickin’ on the Lightning, 7-3, in Toronto, before the screaming Leaf supporters … Joffrey Lupul put up another handful of points to stay amongst the elite of the scoring race … the Leaves had 42 shots on goal !! .. what a downer of a year for Tampa …. - Another WJC note …. Does the IIHF not realize that by putting the English spelling on the Finnish jerseys, they are robbing the game of some of its mystique and the exotic nature of an international event ? Hey, if you have been following hockey for any period of time, you know what Suomi means …. If you don’t know, you will figure it out …. They don’t need to put Finland on the jerseys …. I have never seen Canada or USA spelled on the jerseys in Czech or Russian …. Basically, don’t worry about sucking up to the North American audience too much. We aren’t complete zombies …. Love the Russian jersey, with the Gold Eagle and Russian spelling, classic … - Jan 2 - Winter Classic … Rangers 3 Philly 2 …. The thought remaining at the end of the day concerning the Flyers is this : They continue to fail on the big stage, when the spotlight is squarely on them. They succeeded early as a franchise, the first expansion team to win a Stanley Cup, winning back to back titles as the Broad Street Bullies in 1974 and 1975. Since then, though, they are 0 for six in Stanley Cup Final appearances, and have lost both Winter Classic games they have played in …. Yesterday, Hank Lundquist and his huge equipment stymied the Flyers, while in the Philly net, Sergei Bobrovsky was mediocre. On the bench sat their big dollar goalie, who they have not been able to rely on for wins ….. Now Mike Rupp, there is a guy who has good timing for big games, 2 goals on the big stage, much like his Stanley Cup play for the New Jersey Devils back in the day … - It has to be acknowledged that Brad Richards has had a positive impact on the Rangers …. The team is playing pretty decent hockey as a whole, so it isn’t that Richards turned the team around on his own. He is doing his thing, and that included scoring the winning goal in the Winter Classic …. - John Tortorella definitely suffers from a persecution complex …. He is right, the reffing is horrible in the NHL. It isn’t always against him though, in fact not very often do the Rangers get the shaft ….. - Interesting that Kyle Turris is admitting the demand for a huge contract was a ploy …. And good for him to admit a mistake, something the NHLPA would not approve of ….If Turris really wants fresh start, canning his poor excuse of an agent would be a good start. Follow that with serious effort and a squeaky clean image for a few years, and he might be forgiven by hardcore fans that don’t care for the sense of entitlement many modern athletes brandish … - Stunning win by Russia over the Czech Republic in WJC action …. A barnburner of a game, ended in overtime …. The Russian`s are going through a similar issue to what ruined the American team : big names not producing …. Nail Yakupov and Evgeni Kuznetsov have not had an impact, aside from Kuznetsov`s 9 point outing against Latvia …. At least the Russian`s can be happy about moving on … look at it this way – if these two don`t get going, they will wear goat horns. If they do get going, Team Canada will have their hands full …. - Some interesting officiating in the Slovakia – Finalnd game, with a very questionable ejection basically handcuffing the Slovaks in the late stages of the game …. Finland won this game ugly, 8-5, to set up a classic Scandinavian battle with the Swedes. Mikael Granlund finally had an impact in the tournament … The Slovaks never quit, and losing Matus Chovan late in the game to a poor penalty hurt their efforts to rally ….. Anyway, the stage is set for the Finns to play the big, determined and skilled Swedish team …. Look for the Swedes to win this contest easily …. - If Elliotte Friedman says the Wings will host the Winter Classic next year, and play the Maple Leafs, then it is likely the plan …. Listened to some debate on the issue on a Sportsnet channel as well, pondering the venue …. It would be awesome to see 115,000 fans take in a game in Michigan. Hopefully the powers that be see it that way … - Interesting what has played out with goaltenders this year … Brian Elliott looks All World, Ilya Bryzgalov has been hot and very cold in Philly, Dwayne Roloson is getting slammed by everyone, and can`t stop a beachball in Tampa, Ray Emery is Chicago`s best goalie, Marty Brodeur has been hit and miss for the Devils while Johan Hedberg has been fairly good, and what looked to be a huge coup for Washington, signing Tomas Vokoun, has not worked out …. Watching James Reimer struggle lately for Toronto is not exactly surprising, but one had kind of hoped he would have some long term success, for his sake, and the sake of the Leaves …. The demise of Ryan Miller has been in almost exact correlation with how far he opens his mouth, and how much he whines and cries … Mike Smith has been a legit starter in Phoenix …. - Of note are the teams Steve Yzerman mentions as the top teams in the Eastern Conference … he has Boston at the top of the heap, followed by the Rangers and Flyers. After that, he lumps everyone together …. - One player that was much ballyhooed coming into the year was Brayden Schenn, uber-prospect for the Flyers, late of the Los Angeles Kings, via the Mike Richards trade …. Schenn finally notched his first NHL goal, in the Winter Classic …. The versatile forward has been held back by injuries and the salary cap. Lets see what he can do on the big stage for the rest of the year. He was a prolific scorer last year in junior hockey. The challenge will be to see if he can bring that level of offense to the NHL, or if he becomes as solid second or third line guy …. - Cody Hodgson suffered through a similar year for Vancouver last year, looked at as a bit of a disappointment, and a bit of a question mark. This year, Hodgson is emerging as a very solid NHL player …. Very similar path as Schenn leaving junior and heading into the NHL …. Very high expectations, Super Star performance as the World Junior Championship, then injuries and lacklustre play to start his NHL career …. Perseverance would be the lesson here … |

HITS OF THE DAY OpenIceHitter is on facebook as Open Ice Hitter – Pure Hockey Jan 6 - Congrats to Sverige for their Gold medal win at the 2012 WJC in Calgary ….. Instead, the team will be qualified as a disappointment, and irrelevant …. Tough break for USA Hockey - Steven Stamkos has been hot, rekindling hope of having a 50 goal scorer in the NHL this year …a pure sniper. In attendance was PM Harper, a huge hockey fan, with his son ….. seeing the Czech team live gives a real appreciation for the size of the team, very big kids, Team Canada had no edge physically on this team …. Things were a bit tense for a while when Canada was up 1-0 in the second period, with a definite edge to the crowd, well aware of the history of the Czechs and their ability to steal games … The second Canadian goal was followed by jubilant cheering and relief, and after the Canadians took a 3-0 lead, the crowd relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the game, which Canada won 5-0 … Scott Wedgewood was very solid earning the shutout, making some big saves while the Czech`s still had a chance to win, and some good stops late in the game to preserve the shutout ….. Jonathan Huberdeau was not a gamebreaker on this night, but Mark Stone scored again …. Watching Stone live gives a totally different perspective to his play. He is a decent skater, though not the fastest guy on the ice. His skating will not hold him back. Compared to a guy like Jason Allison, Stone is a much better skater. He is also very good in his own end, and has a solid work ethic. Combined with his size, he has to be regarded as a high end prospect ….. the kid knows where to be in both ends, and what to do with the puck …. What the Czechs lack is a dominant player. No one set the tone, or came close to controlling the play …. Hopefully the Czechs can turn out a new generation of superstars, based on the amazing success of the Czech hockey program at the turn of the millennium …. Young kids from that era should be hitting the prime time soon …. - Los Angeles beat the Hawks 2-0 …. How is that for a Darryl Sutter impact ? It will be fun to see what this LA team does when they get motivated, and start to perform ….. Think of Sutter as hot fuel, aviation grade, for a hot rod, after it had been trying to run on stale bronze grade fuel ….. potential is there for some amazing performance …. Of course, the engine could also blow if it isn’t maintained and used properly, so this is going to be fun watching Dec 27 - NHL back in full swing now, too …. Winnipeg sit in 8th spot in the East …. That is a story worth watching. Evander Kane is emerging as a force for the Jets …. Have to get to a game in Winnipeg, that city is pumped for the return of the Jets … Jets pump Colorado 4-1 … - St Louis manage to really turn things around after putting Ken Hitchcock behind the bench … they are playing well, sitting in one of the top 8 spots, and have the Wings down 2 – zip late in the second period …. Final score, 3-2 Detroit ….. that is typical Red Wing hockey, pulling out a win, finding a way to win …. For the Blues, how do they let that happen ?? It is not easy putting a loss to the Wings behind you, not a loss like that … - Bryz has been better than other Flyer goalies of the past few years, but he is still losing games he should win. Like the game in Tampa tonight. Here are the shots : Flyers 32 Lightning 16 Now the score : Lightning 5 Flyers 1 ???? Seriously …. Yeah, the Flyers need to bescoring one goal per ten shots, considering they have Giroux / Jagr / Hartnell ….but 5 goals on 16 shots ? That is a novice house league stat …. - Shea Weber on the shelf with a concussion …. Brutal year for the head injuries. Weber is such a rugged and powerful player, the idea of him being injured seems wrong. If it can happen to a behemoth like Lindros, though, it can happen to anyone … - Ducks and Capitals are still playing poorly, despite high profile coaching changes … the Ducks fall is easier to square than that of the Caps, who currently hold down the 11 seed in the East, far closer to a lottery pick than the President’s Trophy. That was not on any preseason prediction list ….. If the Caps continue to play poorly, players will be moved, Alex Semin being a name to watch - Regarding the lingering issue of Steve Ott’s latest display of moronism, the incident with Peter Laviolette …. Ott is a plug. At some point he is likely to leave the Dallas organization, and at that point, we will find out his true value as a hockey player. Often when a player like him leaves the one team that thinks he is worth having on the ice, they bounce around, and soon find themselves out of the league …. Look what has happened to Ethan Moreau since leaving the Oilers … this has happened many times with marginal players, they ply their trade as 4th line hacks with one team, and are exposed as soon as they pull on another jersey … - There ya go, Habs 6 Senators 2 ….. Randy Cunneyworth has a victory as bench boss in Montreal. Who knows how long he will have that job, but after all the bs he has been subjected to, good to see him get the win … Erik Cole has been stellar for the Habs to this point, giving them a big body presence. He has been strong, physical, and putting up numbers, breaking the idea that he was only good in Carolina … just what the Habs need. PK Subban made a few blunders defensively, but brings so much offense to the game, it is worth having him on the ice. He is an avid shooter, and a gambler, so the opponent has to pay attention to him …. Subban has a physical presence as well, which the Habs have lacked for years … Dec 26 - World Junior Championship action fires up today …. Awesome. A great winter tradition for hockey fans …. Watching the up and coming hockey prospects with family and buddies, interspersed with some street hockey or basement hockey …can’t beat that … - Canada vs Finland : Heading into the tournament opener, Canada is a real question mark, yet still expected to challenge for a Gold medal …. So many unknowns on the team. As the game unfolded though, Team Canada asserted themselves physically and were able to control the pace of the game, and were fairly smart with the puck, sporting a very effective power play. Finalnd fell apart, with the final score an embarrassing 8-1 in favour of Canada - Jonathan Huberdeau left his mark all over this game, showing why he was the third pick in the 2011 draft … Of all the players in this WJC tournament, Huberdeau may turn out to be the biggest offensive star in the NHL. Big and mobile, with amazing poise, Huberdeau has shown the ability to perfrom when the stakes are high, he was the most dominant player in this game - What a joy to watch WJC coverage without the annoying and geeky presence of Pierre Mcguire …. Thank you NBC for taking this gomer away from TSN !! For anyone who shares this sentiment, there is a good facebook group, “ I Hate Pierre Mcguire “….. don’t like to use the H-word, but that is how the group was named - Mark Stone looked good as the triggerman in the early going … the Brandon Wheat King has been enjoying a great year in the dub … for some of the kids who play in the WJC, it is the stage upon which they announce their presence as big time hockey talents. For others, it is their last hurrah before fading into a career as a minor league journeyman … Stone is a player who could go either way. Not a fast player, but knows how to score … firing three goals in his WJC debut .. - Solid game from Team Canada captain Jaden Schwartz …. A very cerebral player, Schwartz made nice moves with the puck, always seems to be in the right place - As for Finland’s big name, Mikael Granlund, for a player drafted in the first round in 2010, and touted as the best player not in the NHL, he was not overly impressive …. Best way to describe his afternoon would be to say he had an occasional presence … not good enough when your team is counting on you to lead them - It is important to note that this is the 4th tournament in a row in which Team Canada enjoy sold out rinks backing them …. This will change for the next two tournaments. The tournament enjoys high attendance figures when played in Canada or near the Canadian border, in Europe, attendance is sparse …. It would be good for everyone involved if the European venues could sell out, allowing a more neutral setting for the tournament, to dispel the notion that Canadian success is tied to home ice advantage … - Goal of the Night : Ryan Strome was quiet until taking a pass just inside the Finn blueline, executing a slick toe drag to get himself open with a clear shot on the Finn goalie Jonathan Gibson, at which point he fired a wrist shot topcorner, to the blocker side … total hilite reel material …. On the play, Jonathan Huberdeau picked up his fourth point of the game … - Give credit to Team Canada goalie Mark Visentin, who turned in a solid effort in the tournament opening win, an 8-1 hammering of the Finns …Visentin wa porous in the third period of last year’s WJC final, an epic collapse against an opportunistic Russian squad …. He was also shaky in pre-tourney play coming into this year’s event …. He made some solid stops to backstop his team in Edmonton, and from there, the skaters took care of business …. Phoenix will watch their 2010 first rounder closely for the rest of the tournament …. Dec 23 - Sham shootout not so kind to Darryl Sutter in his second game, losing to the Sharks …. Sutter also checked in with the quote of the day, courtesy Rich Hammond at the LA Kings Insider .. “Just to put it on record, I don’t say who starting goalies are. This is not baseball.’’ -LA Kings coach Darryl Sutter - Bruins took apart the Florida Panthers in a bad way, 8-0 …. Brad Marchand picks up a hat trick and 2 assists. Bruins continue to look like worldbeaters …. Boston vs Chicago Stanley Cup matchup ?? Wouldn’t that be something to see … - Flyers have managed to avoid one of their old issues for much of the year, something that had plagued them over the past few years, namely outshooting opponents and still losing the game … they let it happen versus the Rangers though …. This was the setup game for the Winter Classic - Oh Oh …. The NHL Network breaks out a new guy, putting The Canadian Press reporter Chris Johnston on the air …. Thumbs down for name dropping Colin Crock Campbell …. Memo to Johnston : Campbell was a doofus as head of discipline, and was basically jeered out the door by fans and media … - Easy Ryder is having a decent year in Texas, up to 13 goals, and had a big night as the Stars beat Nashville …. These teams now sit 7th and 8th in the West … - A couple of zebra moments ….. the blind bat calling the game between Toronto and the Islanders really blew it in a stupid way when he called Lupul for roughing up John Tavares, and also put Tavares in the box for diving … Isles Assistant coach Doug Weight went ballistic, for good reason, as Lupul basically mugged Tavares … nice call stripes, next time, open your eyes … the zebras also missed a goal in the Rangers – Flyers game, as Ruslan Fedotenko tipped a puck past Bryz, high into the net, though the blind bat standing there did not see it … video review got it right - Anyone who suggested Winnipeg would sit atop Washington in the standings at the Xmas break, speak up now …. - Former Everett Silvertip goalie Leland Irving gets his first win in the NHL as the Flames beat the Vancouver Faker-Divers …. The Flames took their time with Irving, letting him apprentice in the AHL for a while, as they tried to make Henrik Karlsson into a goalie. Karlsson is huge, and wears massive gear, but isn’t so good at stopping pucks … Irving had a successful career in the WHL, hats off for the victory against a hot Vancouver team … Dec 22 - One game with Darryl Sutter, one win for the LA Kings …yeah, it was in the sham shootout, but the Kings will take it. Mike Richards back in the lineup will help, and a game against the lowly Ducks doesn’t hurt … - Hit of the Night : Sabre behemoth Paul Gaustad steps into John Michael Liles, as the Leaf blueliner thought he could coast into the slot with his head down …. Gaustad destroyed the smallish Leaf d-man with a clean hit, leaving Liles sprawled on the ice in the Sabre slot …. - Montreal Canadiens are coming apart in every manner, getting shut out by the Jets, 4-0 …. The Habs can’t do anything right, and Carey Price with a soft game does not improve their chances … for Randy Cunneyworth, another loss will not help quiet the firestorm and foolishness coming from the hordes of bigots attacking him because he does not speak French … once again, the Montreal Canadiens are in the middle of a shameful and embarrassing situation due in large part to their fanbase ….. Hab fans are loud, making the Molson Arena the most lively rink in the league ….at times though, the passion gets out of hand, leading to situations like what Randy Cunneyworth is being subjected to … targeting Cunneyworth because he does not speak French is wrong. Call it what it is, don’t make excuses …. Bigotry and prejudice, exactly what many people in Quebec are paranoid of having happen to them … So why are they subjecting another person to the exact same treatment ??? - Jordan Eberle leaves his mark all over the Oiler victory against Minnesota … 2 slick goals, and a dangerous offensive presence on the ice … Eberle is 15th in league scoring, with the Nuge right behind him at 18th ….. the Oil might not get into the playoffs this year, but the pieces are in place for this team to grow into a contender …. - Not looking good as far as the possibility of having any 50 goal scorers in the league this year …. A few players on pace to best the 40 goal mark, maybe hit 45 tallies … As far as 100 points, that is in reach of a couple of guys, as long as they stay healthy …Giroux and Malkin have been scoring at nearly a point and half per game pace, and can hit the Century mark, as long as they don’t miss any more games …. If the Sedin’s can plug away at 1.18 ppg, they will flirt with the 100 point mark … - Have to say what a solid job Brendan Shanahan has done as the executioner thus far, he has sat down players regardless of the logo on the front of the jersey, or the name on the back, and has done a great job of providing insight and reason …. The one guy he might want to sit down is Nik Kronwall of the Red Wings, though …. As loathed as Ryan Kesler is, he was correct to have a beef with Kronwall, as Kronwall launched himself and targeted Kesler high in the last Wings vs Faker-Divers game …. This is Kronwall’s trademark : Identify that a player has his head down and is coming up the boards, then step into the player, launching himself, with his skates clearly leaving the ice, and plant his shoulder high on the oncoming player, often making contact with the head …. Selanne spoke up on this last year, and he is right : For a league looking to reduce brain injuries, Kronwall is a dangerous player … - Love watching big Keith Aulie patrol the blueline for the Leaves … a massive frame, good mind for the game, and a good skater, that is Aulie. If the Leaves don’t want him as a regular player, he would be a good guy for another team to target … - Goal of the Night : Oilers Lennart Petrell tees up a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle on the left wing side and blasts the biscuit past Wild goalie Nik Backstrom … looked like Brett Hull in the mid 90’s …. Okay, that is a stretch, but Petrell got the shot off quickly, for a shortie, helping out the Oil cause ….. - Who is the next coach to get canned ? Guy Boucher has watched his Tampa team flop badly this season …. Can’t see Edmonton of Buffalo making changes, as Tom Renney has done a good job with the Oilers, and Ruff, the long tenured bench boss in Buffalo, has weathered several storms in the past. If the Flames really fall off, Brent Sutter might be in trouble …. Maybe we don’t see anyone else fired from the coaching ranks until after the regular season ??? Dec 19 - Have to go with the Bruins as the top squad in hockey right now …. Chicago look hot as well, but Beantown has better goaltending, not too discredit Ray Emery, but Tim Thomas has been elite over the past year and a half, and 3 out of the last 4 years, has been the class of goaltenders … Never hurts the Bruins case when they beat longtime Adams Division and Original Six rival Montreal …. As for the Hawks, have to credit Stan Bowman for adding grit, if they end up in a Stanley Cup Final against Boston, they won’t be pushed around … - In Vancouver, the Faker-Divers are starting to roll, and blitzed the Wild 4-0 to make a point versus the upstart Minnesota squad …. Vancouver is a team built for the regular season, and built for dough-headed refs …. It should surprise nobody that they are putting together some victories. Yes, it was joyous to watch them struggle early in the year, and if they happened to tank and miss the playoffs, many a hockey fan would take pleasure in the fact …. Key for this team : The playoffs. And first Chicago. If they pass that test this year, then again, the Bruins will be waiting, and Luongo’s head will be spinning … - Leafs sit in 7th spot now, after dropping a game to the Kings …. Just saying … though Phil the Thrill has reclaimed his scoring leads in points and goals, aided by the fact that the guys who had been leading are injured …. - Goal of the Night : Jordan Eberle hammers a slapshot past Jimmy Howard, a nice juicy rebound from a shot by the Nuge ….. Eberle is lethal from the slot, and had time to tee up a cannon …. One of the most underrated players in the league, and an absolute steal by the Oilers late in the first round of his draft …. Some players just have that flair, a smoothness, that sets them apart from others. Eberle is one of those players … Dec 18 - Disgusting issue coming out of the province of Quebec right now, namely that Randy Cunneyworth doesn’t speak French …. To fully understand the level of ignorance and bigotry coming from those insisting that the Habs coach needs to speak French, lets put it this way … English-only speaking coaches, yes, Anglophones, have coached the Habs to 16 Stanley Cup victories, out of the 24 Cups the bleu, blanc et rouge have won ….What do Hab fans from other regions think about this ? Les Canadiens have a huge following across Canada. My bet is that many outside of Quebec don’t care if the coach only speaks gibberish, as long as he can win …. - Absolutely do not agree with any of the suggestions that interference to forechecking forwards is the answer to eliminating concussions and broken legs to defenseman ….. there are even some respected hockey names backing this idea, like Bob Clarke ….. look, there will always be unfortunate injuries in hockey, some unlucky and freak injuries, like the Claude Giroux knee to the head …. You want to eliminate the ugly things, like Kurtis Foster and Taylor Fedun breaking their legs ? Then when you have worms like a Kostytsin or Torrey Mitchell messing with a guy on a puck race, suspend him for 40 games, let the players know not to put each other in danger …. The whole idea of “ respect “ is questionable …. Some players have it, others don’t … It is a fast game, that is what makes it so great, the speed and the contact … having a defenceman tie up an oncoming forechecker is a step back towards clutch and grab hockey of the late 90’s … what the NHL need to do is have Brendan Shanahan straighten out the refs, have them call the rules as they are written. A forward takes 20 full strides and clobbers a d-man ? Charging. As it stands, right now, watching NHL games, a penalty could be called about every 15 seconds, but the refs have set the bar so low, they allow so much stick work, crosschecking, and interference, that they have gotten themselves into a situation where it is tough to call any penalty with any degree of integrity … call the rules as they appear in the book, and the game will clean itself up quickly … - Amazing fact thus far : 6 coaches have been canned to this point of the season, but Scott Arniel continues to run the Blue Jacket bench … What will be even more amazing is if he and Scott Howson are back running the Columbus entry next year … - Fight of the Night : Two regular players, Bryan Bickell and Cory Sarich, drop the mitts, after Bickell is run over by Sarich …. This is how it should be, regarding fighting in the NHL. Yes, it is dangerous, but having two actual legitimate players throwing down can be viewed as part of the game …. They really went at it, too …. Score it a draw, as each tagged the other with a few good shots …. - Not sure why the Flyers are still slated in the top spot in the East …. The Bruins have more wins, and the same amount of points, in the same amount of games ….it is about winning, isn’ it ?? By the way, the Bruins have an amazing + 47 goal differential … no one else is even close - Just like that, St Louis have the third best record in the West …. Ken Hitchcock is bringing some of that old Kamloops Blazer magic with him …. The old guys, Arnott and Langenbrunner, have helped the Blues, who really re-shaped the team, especially the defense, last year … Dec 17 - Love the Mike Babcock quote after Jacques Martin gets axed in Montreal …. “Everybody in today’s NHL - owners, management – thinks they have a team that can make the playoffs.” “I hate to break the news, but for some teams, it’s not true.” -Mike Babcock, coach of the Detroit Red Wings on the firing of NHL coaches. Quotes are via Bob Duff Babcock is awesome …. A breath of fresh air … you tell’em Mike - Interesting that the Habs would fire Martin now, especially after playing a decent game against the Conference leading Flyers … of course, the selection of Martin to coach a group of undersized softies was interesting at the time, but Bob Gainey made several eyebrow raising moves as GM in Montreal … since Pierre Gauthier took over for Gainey, he hasn’t exactly been Mr Astute himself …but he has added size and a bit of grit …too bad the Habs are also way down the list as far as skill goes, too … - Goal of the Night : Alex Burmistrov crosses the Duck blueline on the right wing, and as a left handed shot, zips a wrist shot toward the top corner, far side …. And finds the back of the net … a bit embarrassing for Dan Ellis, the Duck netminder of record, but still a nice shot from the skinny Jet … - Fight of the Night : Jody Shelley, the seldom used Flyer tough guy, decides to drop the mitts with Bruin captain Zdeno Chara …. Never a good idea to scrap Chara. Never. The guy has proven himself so many times …. Neither player unloaded any bombs, probably lucky for Shelley, but Chara kept peppering Shelley with jabs, before taking him down. Boston feature two of the most feared fighters in the league, Chara and Lucic, and both guys also happen to be elite players … - Goal of the Night 2 : Jordan Eberle ties Colin White in a not, waltzes in front of Anti Niemi, and cooly scores another hilite goal ….Eberle is so slick, so smart, and still underrated …. He set up The Nuge late in the game as well, for what would have been a big goal, but The Newf, Ryan Clowe, tied up The Nuge’s stick … - Ryan Miller has not been the same guy since Sid Crosby’s lit him up for the Gold Medal goal at the Olympics … Miller was terrible in an 8-3 loss to the Pens, allowing 3 goals on 7 shots to start the game against Pittsburgh. The frustration has been coming out verbally for Miller, who has taken the mantle as chief whiner in the NHL - Ugly game in Detroit, with the Kings giving incoming coach Darryl Sutter a ton of ammo to work with, following an 8-2 crushing at the hands of the Wings … brutal year for the Kings, Brutal. This team was expected to step up and dominate in the West. But they have been awful. What does Darryl Sutter do to wake these guys up ? - Marquee Matchup : It was supposed to be anyway … but the Bruins crushed the depleted Flyers, 6-0 … Chara picked up a Gordie Howe Hat Trick, and the Bruins basically humbled the Flyers … not even a close game. Big Lucic flattened Zac Rinaldo, and the only reason the blind bat zebras called a penalty is because it was Lucic, otherwise they wouldn’t have called anything that happens to RInaldo …. To his credit, Lucic was very honest about the hit being edgy. Rinaldo jumped right up. That is how you play it out from both sides. Vancouver Faker-Divers, and the worm Ryan Kesler, take note …. - Speaking of worms, Kyle Turris gets his wish, and is dealt from Phoenix to Ottawa … no pressure Kyle, but now you have even more to prove … Turris has brought a lot of attention to himself, and allowed himself to be tied to a goofy agent …. The Senators have a lot of young players in the lineup already ….. let`s see how this all plays out … - Where did Nazem Kadri go ?? According to Leaf fans and certain Toronto media, mostly TSN, Kadri would be a superstar by now … truth is, Kadri isn`t very strong, not a great skater, lacks a vision for the game ….maybe he can improve, but if Burke is smart, he will move him while some other GM`s still think he is a player … Joe Colbourne has been getting an opportunity with the Leaves, and the towering former Camrose Kodiak could be a player … that is not a good development for Kadri`s chances … - Really appreciate the job Brendan Shanahan has done as disciplinarian of the NHL …. Shanahan has taken a very professional approach, makes himself accountable via the video explanations, and deals with all offenders and teams. Such a huge improvement over the Colin Campbell era. Shanahan acknowledges that when dealing with a specific incident, two markets are likely to have unreasonable views, you can`t please everyone, but so far he has been excellent, hasn`t played favorites or targeted certain teams, which was a huge problem with Colin Campbell … - Great Hotstove on CBC HNIC last night …. No loudmouth Milbury ignorantly cutting off Eric Francis of Elliotte Friedman …. Keep that jerk off of the air. If cbc could bring back Pierre LeBrun, the panel would be excellent …. You have, in Francis and Friedman, two guys that hear a lot of chatter, and offer it up with their thoughts on it. In Mad Mouth Milbury, you have a blabbermouth who has proven that he has no idea how to build a team, yet he does not care to listen to what anyone else has to say …. What a loser. Keep him off the telly …. Thumbs up to MacLean, Francis and Friedman for a solid segment of the Hotstove …. - Mike Neuvirth, wake up. Allowing that goal to the Avs is embarrassing for everyone, for the game … how can you call yourself a pro after that goal. All he had to do was pay attention .. A flick shot at the net, Neuvirth never saw it … the Caps lose, 2-1 …. His mates are likely choked after that … you think teammates don`t get mad at each other ? I have seen top players fistfight in dressing rooms, and on a losing team, not meeting expectations, you better believe tempers are short … Dec 16 - Goal of the Night : Have to go with the Tomas Vanek shot over the trapper of James Reimer, as Vanek allowed Reimer to drift away from the far side of the net, opening the top corner. Vanek is a true sniper, with great awareness on the ice …. He knew he had time in this instance, and waited for Reimer to give him an opening before burying the puck in the Leaves net .. - Speaking of the Leaves, they have fallen down the standings somewhat … this is a concern because Washington is behind them, and come April, the Capitals are likely to be in the top 8. Winnipeg also trail the leaves, and they are going to have some magic in Manitoba this spring … and Tampa could be only a goaltender trade or a coaching change away from turning things around …. So there are three teams for the Leafs to be eyeing in the rearview mirror … As far as teams in front of the Leaves dropping in the standings, the only club they can really expect to fall off is Florida …..again, not to be a total downer for Leaves fans, but how long can Joffrey Lupul keep playing like an All-Star ? Have to like Lupul, he has always put in an effort, always been an opportunistic scorer, and it is great that he is having a career year, but can he keep it up ? How long until Tim Connolly is injured and misses a significant chunk of the sesaon …. Good for Leaf fans if there is playoff hockey in the Big Smoke, just don’t be too heartbroken if they miss the dance, even with those cool retro late 60’s jerseys ….. - Monster night from Jason Spezza, 2 goals and 2 assists, as the Sens dump Pittsburgh … the Penguins have been finding the loss column a lot lately …. Spezza has been playing up to his potential again, as a scoring threat and difference maker … remember this is a player who was in the OHL at age 15, made the Team Canada WJC team at age 16, and had a run three years in the NHL where he posted up point totals of 90, 87, 92 …. Spezza has great vision and timing as a player, and a frame big enough to handle the NHL physicality … - Hit of the Night : Young Sabre d-man Brayden McNabb comes across the blueline and unloads on Toronto Maple Leaf hanger-on Nik Kulemin, sending the Leaf forward flying … a clean and well timed hit, definitely separated the soft Kulemin from the puck …. - Jersey really spanked Dallas, 6-3 …. The Stars gave young goalie Richard Bachman another start, but Bachman was not good in this game … Zach Parise is coming on in a big way for the Devils, but if the dynamic scoring star is smart, he will bolt in the summer for a new club. New Jersey made a huge mistake in signing Kovalchuk-Grossman, and Parise should look to Los Angeles or Colorado as a destination for a fresh start in July … - Absolutely love the suggestion from the Toronto Sun writer Chris Stevenson, where he daydreams about a playoff bound Winnipeg Jet team trading for Teemu Selanne, allowing the fans and Selanne to close out the Finnish Flash’s career where it started, in Manitoba … - Need to acknowledge the solid career of former Kamloops Blazer Scott Neidermeyer, who had his # 27 jersey retired in New Jersey …. Neidermeyer was known for his skating ability a composure, and winning … he won every top level hockey trophy possible … he insists it was luck, and luck played into it, but Neidermeyer was a great talent. I soured on him a bit for a few incidents, like the stick swinging at Peter Worrell’s head, but even so, he had a great career, and is headed directly to the HHOF …. - Good that Mad Mike Milbury is off the telly, but man, did he really have to go ballistic ?? Allegedly, you need to say in this incredibly litigious age, Milbury intervened in a dispute between his 12 year old kid, and an opponent, at a hockey game .... Milbury intervened physically, allegedly ..... what a loser, not only a loudmouth who is the proven worst GM in the history of the NHL, but also a bully as well, though we all new that much ... Note to cbc and nbc ... never, ever, bring the guy back, no matter what the outcome of these accusations from the 12 year old kids parents Dec 15 - Big news of the day, obviously, is the concussion issue ending Chris Pronger’s season, and possibly his career ….. the third high profile Flyer captain to have serious concussion issues. Pronger has had a great career, a Hall of Fame career, but didn’t seem ready to hang up his skates. At his age, and likely having suffered concussions in the past, you have to wonder if that is it for the big game controlling rearguard … - On that note …. Paul Holmgren should make another of his brash moves, and bring in Nashville captain Shea Weber … the Flyers defence has been suspect without Pronger, so if they need a franchise d-man, Weber would be the guy. Philly can deal Matt Carle, and if Holmgren can be shrewd ( which he hasn’t been for a while ), he could likely part with a second tier forward and a draft pick to land Weber … Why all the talk of Weber ? If he hasn’t re-signed in Nashville by now, after the arbitration thing, it indicates little desire for him to stay there. If he hits the freebie market, there is no way he goes back to Nashville. Detroit is the premium destination for free agents …. If Holmgren wants another huge presence on the blueline, he better get busy … - Last Flyers note for the day …. Interesting game against the Habs, with a depleted Flyers lineup taking the W …. For anyone who watched this game, especially Hab fans, the most notable change in this matchup was the Habs being able to play with the Flyers physically …. Yes, the Flyers changed their approach somewhat, losing Richards and Carcillo, two very physical players, and Jeff Carter, a big body presence …. But the Habs have beefed up, and it showed. PK Subban has a physical edge, Erik Cole doesn’t back down, Alex Yemelin is big, Pacoreitty likes the contact …. This team has added some bulk, and it is an improvement. As far as Tomas Kaberle, his shine will wear off quickly. He is not a gamebreaking player, but a softie … - Taylor Hall is back, with a two goal performance for the Oil, though they drop the decision to the Coyotes …. Hall is an electrifying player, who works very hard, has great skill, and plays every game like it might be his last … if the Oil manage to claim a playoff spot, Edmonton will go nuts … - At one point, about 5 years ago, or something like that, the Nashville – Detroit matchup looked like it was going to be the new marquee bill in the Norris Division … that was a short lived illusion however …. Detroit has remained a power, and Nashville is always competitive … just not in the same class as the Wings. Watching Shea Weber score a pair against the Wings was pretty neat …. Thinking it could be his team next year …. The Predators took this game, getting another goal from Jordan Tootoo …. For those who don’t recall, Tootoo was a goalscoring threat in his days with the Brandon Wheat Kings …. - Another Vancouver Faker-Diver goes off … this time Kevin Bieksa … Bieksa actually has skill and grit, but looked like total goof in his ranting at the Hurricanes … Have to like the results Alain Vigneault gets from his club, but some change to the character of the team would make them more palatable to fans other than their diehard base …. An easy team to loathe, that is what the Faker-Divers are … - Darryl Sutter, just take the job in LA …. There is an agriculture and cattle industry in the Southern Cal area, so Sutter can work some cattle in his spare time if he misses the homestead of Viking, Alberta …. Those Kings need a change, a kick in the pants, anything, and Sutter would definitely deliver a wakeup call …. For anyone who hasn’t been in the Viking area, check it out …. Nice rolling hills, farmland, beautiful country … - Goal of the Night : Patrick Marleau scores a beaut, a top shelf wrist shot from the high slot, over the glove of Varlamov …. Just like the coach told you how to do it in peewee … pick a corner, line it up, flex the wrists and light the lamp …. The Avs sit in 13th spot in the West ….. time for a thorough housecleaning in that front office … Dec 14 - Playing the big, bad Bruins was a test for the Senators, but it did not end well … the Bruins won decisively , 5-2. Ottawa have fallen back into mediocrity, which is on par with their talent level … one comment on the Senators Nick Foligno : What a difference between his reaction to a knee on knee hit, and that of the ultra faker, Ryan Kesler of the Vancouver Faker-Divers …. Foligno takes what looked to be a significant jolt to the hinge, but came back to play his typical rough edged game. Talking to reporters after the game, Foligno did not whine or play up the drama, but opined that he did not think McQuiad tried to maim him … Kesler and the Vancouver club could take some lessons, and grow up … - Fight of the Night : Bruins champ Milan Lucic goes with Senator bruiser Matt Carkner, heavies that also play a regular shift …. Good tilt, no decisive winner, both guys showing no fear of the other … - Chicago top the Wild in the sham shootout, thanks to a very ugly shootout goal from Taxi Kane … Kane’s goal looked like something you would see when a couple of ten year old kids are left to play hockey amongst themselves …. You have all day to dipsy doodle, with no one to check you, so you end up looking like a self absorbed daydreamer …. That is why the sham shootout needs to go …. On the other hand, it made up for a blown call by a daydreaming linesman, so maybe there is some justice that Chicago win on such a cheesy goal …. - Detroit will give Tomas Tatar some time in the big league …. For anyone not familiar with the slick skating and opportunistic Slovak player, lets put it this way : the Wings don’t rush guys into the NHL, but don’t be surprised if Tatar is there to stay. He is an outstanding player, very smart Dec 13 - A lot has happened in the past few days … not only is Sid Crosby back on the shelf after a rough game against David Krejci and the Boston Bruins, the league scoring leader, Claude Giroux, and the top goal scorer, Milan Michalek, are both sidelined with concussions … So what is going on with this ? Is the league being over cautious, or is the game that much rougher now ? If you watch footage of games in the 70’s, where very few players even wore helmets, the pace of the game is noticeably slower, and though fighting was common, the bodychecks and collisions were less severe. The players did not approach the physical aspect of the game with such reckless abandon. Knowledge of concussions, or brain injuries, even awareness of these issues, was not nearly at the level of today …. This is going to be a hard issue to get straight for the big collision sports leagues, the NHL, CFL and NFL …. - Shot of the Night : Sheldon Souray blasts Rangers poseur Henrik Lundquist with a trademark cannon from the point, stunning the Ranger goalie, even though Lundquist wears such big equipment that he looks like a lacrosse goalie …. Not sure where exactly Lundquist got stung, but the zebra eventually stopped play so the Ranger goalkeeper could get his bearings. The slow mow of Souray’s shot is wild, from the stick flex right through to the rising missile hammering Lundquist in the upper body …. Souray may be the most intimidating shooter in hockey. The best way to judge the impact when he tees up a shot is if you are watching him play live, in the arena, and seeing the reaction of the other players on the ice. When Souray cocks back the twig to unleash his patented cannon, everyone scrambles to get out of the way, or get some solid equipment in the line of fire …. He has everybody’s attention every time he shoots … - Brutal night for Washington goalie Tomas Vokoun, as the Flyers put 5 softies past him en route to an easy win against the Capitals … It is still early to be eating any words just yet, but the thought has entered a few minds, this one included, that maybe Vokoun is not the solid and capable goalie he was thought to have been …. Time will tell, and there is still a lot of hockey to be played, but the poor play of the Caps has raised a lot of questions this year, about Vokoun, Ovechkin, Green, Backstrom and Semin …. Just two years ago, the duo of Backstrom and Ovechkin was the envy of the league …. Now they are a headache for Dale Hunter to figure out … - One team that has had a brutal go of it when it comes to concussions is the Flyers. Currently, they have league scoring leader Claude Giroux on the shelf, elite defenseman Chris Pronger out with a sore brain, and elite prospect Brayden Coburn shelved with concussion issues ….. that is a huge hit for the current roster. This is also a team that lost two captains to concussions, Eric Lindros and Keith Primeau, while the team was a Stanley Cup contender. Primeau would never play again after a fairly innocent looking bump from Alexander Perezhogin ( the same guy that brained Garrett Stafford with his stick, yes ), and Lindros was never the same after a series of concussions in the late 90’s, punctuated by the famous and bone jarring train wreck courtesy Scott Stevens …. - Wicked rumours out of Los Angeles that the Kings are pursuing Darryl Sutter to coach the lethargic and ineffective Kings ….. wow, talking about bringing in a whip-cracker. Imagine the first conversation between Dustin Penner and Sutter, or some of the interesting motivational techniques Sutter might use on the underachieving King forward …. One issue bound to come up is Dustin Brown’s role with the team. Does he have a large enough presence to captain that team ? The Kings had massive expectations from everyone this year, and are a unanimous bust so far …. How about Sutter setting Drew Doughty straight ? What do they do with Ethan Moreau, a hard worker, but also not known to have the best judgement, and no scoring capablilities ….. - Team Canada has set its roster for the upcoming World Junior Championship ( WJC ) in Calgary … this team has to be the favorite to win, as they are most years. After disappointing Silver medals the past two years, Canadian fans are ravenous for Gold. Look for Jaden Schwartz to emerge as a gamebreaker, and the offensive catalyst. Mark Scheifle and Tanner Pearson will be watched closely, and the tournament will be a huge test for Brett Connolly, an older veteran player – he will be expected to make a big impact, and if he doesn’t, will be a disappointment. Goaltending will be a question mark, as it has been a weakness for Canada the past two tournaments … If Jonathan Huberdeau can play, he should be a star, and become a household name. On the blueline, Brandon Gormley will be given the opportunity to play a big role …. - The NHL website is running a feature of players colliding with refs …. Ha ha, funny, funny …. How about getting two of the useless clowns off the ice ?? Always in the way, the zebra’s mess up as many calls as they get right … with modern technology, the game would be better served by equipping two on ice officials with headsets, and having a team of two or three off ice officials communicating with them, watching the game from several angles on tv, to get the calls correct … it is a bit frustrating as a fan to know within seconds when a ref has blown a call, realizing that it likely won’t be corrected. The game is way too fast for an on ice official to have any chance of getting many calls correct, and we are talking anything from off sides to key goals …. As far as the goofy idea of a “ challenge “, well, reality tv is stupid, and so are challenges. We don’t need to create a little subplot within the game. Just get the calls right, which we now have the capability to do … - Love those Winnipeg Jets, hanging around a playoff spot … let’s see where they sit in early April. If the Jets can squeak into the playoffs, the Manitoba city will be on cloud 9 …. Last year, as the Atlanta Thrashers, the team absolute tanked in the second half of the year after looking to be a lock to get into the playoffs … this year, many picked them for a doormat … it is hard not to cheer for the hard working Andrew Ladd, and his sidekicks, Big Buff and Evander Kane. Doesn’t hurt that Bryan Little is having a bounce back year either … - Detroit sitting in 4th in the Western Conference, a point back of the BlackHawks, with a game in hand …. Always in the mix, with the best GM in the league, and one of the best coaches … and a lot of room to make a move as far as money / roster goes …. Everybody mentions Shea Weber when the conversation turns to who Detroit might add …. This would be yet another coup for Ken Holland, and though it might not happen during the season, if Nashville don’t get the rough edged defenseman signed before July 1, the odds of Weber wearing Red and White next year are high … Dec 9 - Pierre Gauthier does it again, picking up an overpaid, overhyped slacker from another team, after the slacker signs a huge deal and flops in the previous city …. The Habs trade Jaroslav Spacek to the Hurricanes for Tomas Kaberle. Look for Kaberle on a power play with Scott Gomez, and when you see it, start laughing out loud and point at the nearest Habs fan … for Kaberle, this is his 4th team in the past 10 months …. - Milan Michalek, and his re-emergence this year, has been a great story for the Ottawa Senators. When Michalek broke into the NHL with San Jose, he was billed as a speedy goal scorer, and looked capable of fulfilling that potential initially, before fading out of the spotlight and plugging away like a journeyman NHL player. Michalek has been great for Ottawa so far, with 18 goals … - The Capitals double up the Leaves, 4-2, on a good effort from Ovechkin and a big night from Big Money Wides, Dennis Wideman … Washington have put together a few good efforts, and picked up some wins, while the Leaves have been .500 over their last 10 games. The effort is still there for the Leafs…. Honestly, can they remain a top club for a full season with that lineup ?? Lupul is having a great year, as is Kessel, but can Lupul sustain his level of play for a full season ? Good for him if he can …. - With the Toronto Maple Leafs set to be purchased by communications giants, there could be another motive to get the franchise consistently in the win column …. The team has always made money, lots of it …. But a winning team would definitely help tv ratings and attract an even larger audience …. - Goal of the Night : Sam Gagner fires a one-timer past Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov after a crafty setup from The Nuge, where Hopkins made a couple of deft moves to fry the Colorado defenseman before sending a perfect pass the Gagner for the killshot …. - The Nuge sits in sixth spot in league scoring, Eberle is in 8th …. Two very clever players … the Oil picked Eberle in the number 22 slot a few years back, as a player who could bring some offense. Eberle played in the dub on a horrible Regina Pats team, where he scored a lot, but his real showcase as an amateur was the WJC, where in two appearances, he attained the status of clutch scorer and legend …. But in the NHL, playing with a cast of solid players, he has been phenomenal …. Top tier puck skills, vision and timing ….. - Hit of the Night : Florida’s Dmitry Kulikov crushes Buffalo Sabre Corey Tropp with a devastating open ice shot as Tropp tried to move the puck into the Panther zone …. Perfect hit, shoulder into the torso, levelling the young Sabre …. Dec 8 - First place Minnesota Wild …. Beating the underachieving 10th place LA Kings …. Did not see that call anywhere before the season. Heatley and Setoguchi are contributing, but not lighting the league on fire, both on pace for around 30 goals …. Something to be said for new coach Mike Yeo, an unknown to casual hockey fans before getting the job in Minnesota … If he keeps the Wild near the top of the West standings, he will be a Jack Adams nominee … - No Crosby for the Pens, and they lose to state rival Philly in a marquee matchup for first place in the East. The Flyers would hold off a 3rd period surge for a 3-2 win …. Seeing the video of Crosby bumping with a Boston Bruin, fairly innocent contact from both players, a routine collision along the boards in a puck battle, and now having Crosby sit out a few games, the question that comes to mind is whether anyone has discussed a more passive approach to some situations with Crosby. He is a very intense player, and competes with all of his energy …. But bumping a guy in that situation might be something Crosby has to forego to prolong his career. He put up 12 points in 8 games, which is a 120 point clip for the year ….. hope he isn’t out long, but the concussion thing is scary … if little bumps are causing health problems, things don’t look good for Crosby - Very uncharacteristic elbow from Ville Leino, against his former team, too … but not a player that was on the roster during Leino’s tenure with the Flyers … he got his wing up on rookie Matt Read … chalk it up as an aberration on Leino’s part - Edmonton boast the bad dude of suspensions so far, with Andy Sutton being told to sit until Brendan Shanahan gets around to dealing with his latest transgression ….okay, that might be a bit misleading. Sutton is a physical player, he just happened to cross the line twice this year so far …. Shanahan has brought an unbiased approach to his job, a real change of policy from Colin Campbell, who played his favorites very publicly, and used little reason or sense in making decisions … As for Sutton, we shall see how long he is a spectator …. - Rough start to the year for Kyle Turris, 5 games, zero points …. Not exactly a Sid Crosby-like return to action …. Honestly, what was the kid thinking ? Horrible advice from his “ agent “ … regardless of what the relationship is like between Turris and the brass in Phoenix, he had to know he couldn’t force a trade …. - Seeing how the Ottawa Senators season goes between now and April will be interesting. Ottawa has played far better than expected to this point, and may save Bryan Murray’s job by doing so … the emergence of Erik Karlsson has been huge, and the players Murray brought in for depth have been solid Dec 5 - Okay, need to clarify something that not all hockey fans are aware of ….. calling the Toronto Maple Leafs the “ Leaves “ comes from the classic hockey book King Leary …. Now you are in the know …. - Realignment …. Not ever gonna make everyone happy …. But it works for me …. Four conferences or divisions, call them what you will, it is only a fancy term for the word “ group “ … yes, the conferences are unbalanced. Yes, some people are freaking out about that. Again, you can’t please everyone. Something to think about though … Bettman has left room in the Eastern pairing for two more teams, so maybe …. Toronto #2 and Quebec City ?? Like him or not, Bettman always has a plan, and when the US economy gets rolling again, which it will eventually, the league will make even more money than it does now. You can throw Quebec and Toronto 2 into the mix as soon as those new rinks get built, and they are good to go …. - Heard about a proposal to have 20 teams in the playoffs … as it stands, the 16 teams in the post season set up the best tournament in sports, a tournament of series, with the reward being the ultimate sports trophy …. Love it. The idea of a preliminary round isn’t a bad idea, but the current set up works well …. If you start getting too many teams in the playoffs, the idea of the regular season gets de-valued ….. remember when 16 teams out of 21 made the dance ??? Hit of the Night : Dion Phaneuf crushes Michael Sauer along the boards, the end result of the two players chasing the same loose puck, with Sauer sent flying, and losing his skid lid … the Leaves would top the Rangers, 4-2 …. - A two goal night by former Swift Current Bronco Zack Smith, including the winner late in period three, powered the Senators past the struggling Tampa squad … Interesting character, Zack Smith … a big undrafted forward from the Western League, he topped out with 22 goals in the WHL … this year he should hit the 20 goal mark in the big show, yup, number 15 is making his presence felt for the Senators, it just isn’t with Dany Heatly wearing the jersey …. - Marquee Matchup : Boston vs Pittsburgh ….. Tim Thomas shut the door on the Pens in this one. Did not like the Brad Marchand slew foot …. Marchand is an extremely effective player when he works hard and thinks smart. He doesn’t need to pull stunts like a slew foot …. Tyler Seguin scores again …. Bruins 3 – Penguins 1 …. For the record, I am not a Bruins fan, but do appreciate their style of play, and acknowledge their success …. - Tampa sitting with a record of 11 wins and 15 losses will be bothering Steve Yzerman big time … Rolie the Goalie is catching a lot of flak for the Lightning struggles …. Keep an eye on this situation, Yzerman won’t let his team fal too far back without swapping some players out, but the Bolts aren’t a lost cause by any means …. Basically, a team only needs to be just over .500, with a few loser points, to make the playoffs … - If we are going to close the book on a few teams already, it is the following four : Columbus, Anaheim, Carolina and the Islanders …. - Jonathan Toews is making a move in the NHL scoring stats …. Wonder if he can keep up the pace? Toews goes hard both ways, and plays a very smart game … his commitment to defensive zone responsibility kind of had hockey watchers thinking he would never match Taxi Kane on the stat sheet, but Toews has been hot, and it isn’t fluke … he may not keep up his current pace, but he is certainly a premier offensive talent .. - Woo – eeee !! White hot article by Steve Simmons, dressing down Brian Burke for bullying the media … not sure what the inter-personal subplot to this is, but Simmons really chewed on Burke, who in all fairness, can be thorny, and likes to carry a huge presence in the media, difficult to do in Toronto …. Check it out, Simmons is always an interesting read … - Dale Hunter sits at 1 -3 as coach of the Caps … he will get riled up before too long, and that is when things will get interesting in Washington. Hunter played a with a ton of edge and pride, and having a highly talented lineup make him look bad will not fly. What happened to that 24-7 tv coverage of the Caps? Lets get that back, with constant coverage of Hunter, Ovie, Semin, Green and Vokoun … Dec 3 - Cautionary note for Bruins fans regarding the absolute domination of the Leaves so far this season ….. don’t think it means a free pass if the teams are to meet in the playoffs … sure, it is fun to mock Leaves fans right now, with the Beantown Bruisers have beaten Brian Burke’s boys 4 straight times, but this is how springtime playoff nightmares get set up …. Still waiting for the wheels to come off in Toronto, though …. Credit to Phil the Thrill Kessel and Dion Phaneuf, both acquired by Brian Burke to be difference makers. Burke took a lot of flak for those deals until this year … of course, everyone knows about the Kessel deal, and he has been a washout against his old club. Burke is definitely watching the emergence of Tyler Seguin … if the other kid, Doug Hamilton, turns out to be a player, then Burke has to have some regrets ….. - Reportedly, the nhlpa is squawking about a possible return to straight up divisional formats as part of a conference re-alignment …..sorry, but the nhlpa image is so sullied, it is time someone reminds the boys that the tail doesn’t wag the dog … check with the fans instead, that opinion needs to be considered before the opinion of a players union run by a bunch of self-interested lawyers or, ahem , “ agents “ …. - Don’t be confused by the standings, they don’t take into account games played …. The best team in the NHL is the Boston Bruins …. Chicago and Pittsburgh are okay, but the Bruins are the class of the league right now ….. as for Minnesota, just wait, the train wreck is coming. The Florida Panthers ? They might hang on to a playoff spot, but can’t see them holding on to the number 3 spot … - Dale Hunter gets the win with his Washington Capitals, and the Caps sit atop Ottawa in position number 8 … look, I am not a Capitals fan, but right now I am liking the idea of Hunter running that team, and hope to see that team live up to its potential …. - The Jets are hovering around a playoff spot, and though there is a lot of time left for things to go south, they had a bad start, recovered from it, and are now playing decent shinny … the emotional lift of playing in front of a raucous crowd is going to boost them, so don’t be surprised to see them in the post season … - Good columns to check out today : As always, Jim Matheson at the Edmonton Journal, and a very comprehensive piece from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun …. These two guys cover just about everything … I like the suggestion from Garrioch that Pierre Gauthier is on the razors edge in Montreal … the Carey Price / Jaro Halak deal is about the only thing Gauthier got right … sticking with a lineup of smurf-like forwards has not been a good idea for the Habs. Adding Erik Cole brought some size, but Cole is no Milan Lucic, and that is what the soft Habs need, is a 6 foot 4 inch bonecrusher who can score 35 goals …. Actually, the Habs are so soft, they need about 6 guys like that up front …. Giving Andrei Markov a contract for millions was also a bad move, as Markov is slated to go under the knife again for rusty hinges …. What does it say when a guy is having Bobby Orr- like knee problems with modern medicine and techniques ? The guy is likely done, and Gauthier and the Habs are frittering away time waiting for an unlikely return … nothing personal against Markov, just the harsh reality of the situation … - The reeling Flames beat the Oilers, who would have guessed ? Iginla bags three assists in the win .. Sam Gagner, formerly known as Twerp around here, picks up his first goal of the year. Have to feel for Gagner, a former floating pansy who finally figured out how to play in the NHL, only to find that the team may have passed him by … Gagner now works hard both ways, and will go anywhere on the ice, and do anything asked of him. It all changed when he scrapped with former Flame Craig Conroy a year or two back … before that Gagner played only in soft areas and expected his teammates to do all the work. He would make a solid third line center, but the Oilers might move him, time will tell …. - No to be overlooked : Jordon Tootoo rubs out Ryan Miller, and the Sabre whiner goes ballistic … actually hilarious to see the footage. In all honesty, Tootoo barely bumped the Sabres beanpole of a netminder, but Miller is a bit touchy after getting steamrolled by Bonecrusher Lucic …. Miller was trying to get some shots in on Tootoo, but his efforts had the same effect as an Alex Semin punch, for anyone who remembers Semin’s one foray into pugilism … Will Paul Guastad have a go at Tootoo next time the teams play ? Tootoo is one tough cookie, and Gaustad already took a big chance dancing with Lucic …. - Nice to see David Perron back in the NHL after concussion issues … Perron scored in a losing effort by the Blues, as the BlackHawks dump the Blues … St Louis currently sit in a playoff spot … - Players that need to be banished to East Coast League, in order to make a point about big dollar guaranteed contracts and the failure of players and “ agents “ to live up to their end of the deals : Tomas Kaberle, Scott Gomez, Matt Stajan, Jeff Finger …. These guys had an agent represent them as gamebreakers, big time talents … all have been total busts. They don’t even deserve to be in the AHL … Dec 2 - Oilers 6 Jackets 3 Eberle scored a powerplay goal about 15 seconds into this one, on a cross-ice pass from The Nuge, Ryan Jones scored three times …. Done deal … Former Kindersley Klipper Derek Dorsett scored a pair for the Blue Jackets, but this game was about the Oilers, and the wicked young talent they have …. Need to clarify something here : A few years back, when the Oiler organization was running with the slogan and idea of young guns, promoting Twerp-era Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano and Tom Gilbert as a trio of up and coming offensive stars that would rejuvenate the franchise, with Craig MacTavish behind the bench, a $7 million dollar Shawn Horcoff as their well rounded superstar, Fernando Pisani as the big body sniper … well, only derision and mocking could be found on this site. That upset some folks at the time, but I think they now understand why the Oiler organization was given such a rough ride – they were a laughingstock, that is why. Currently, the same can not be said. Thanks to a couple of number 1 picks, and stellar drafting in slot 22 to land Jordan Eberle, the Oil are rolling. Ryan Jones has been a very solid addition, and the beef Edmonton brought in this summer ( Darcy Hordichuk ) has also helped …. Edmonton want to be excited about the Oilers, then have at it … that team has substance and star power, and it shows in the win column - Rough night for Bruce Boudreau, Duck era Boudreau …. At home, the Ducks blow a 3 – zip lead, losing in overtime to the Flyers, who had Jaromir Jagr back in the lineup and on the scoresheet … that still sounds weird, Jagr the Flyer ….. Giroux iced the Ducks in the extra frame, after a bit of a Ryan Getzlaf meltdown … Philly outshot Anaheim 47 – 22, and won … a big problem for the Flyers over the past years was losing games in which they outplayed and outshot the opposition. It was an indictment of their goaltending ….. Bryz has to win these games, so give him credit for picking up the W, despite the early deficit …. - Kovalchuk-Grossman has what, 6 or 7 goals ??? Was it worth Mr Devils owner ?? Has Kovalchuk-Grossman been that $100 million dollar franchise cornerstone ?? What a joke …. By the by, Devils Lose ! Devils Lose ! ….. another statement for performance based pay …. - The way the Sabres are playing, they could well end up in the playoffs, at which point they look like they are going to be nothing more than a punching bag for a contender … Their big free agent guys, well, Erhoff has been okay, 13 points in 25 games, but he isn’t winning the Norris any time soon …. Leino has been bad, 7 points thru 25 games … he needs a salary reduction to about $3 mill per annum, and a time warp back into Philly, his one successful setting in his three NHL stops …. With Leino’s puck possession style, he would probably be good fit back in Detroit as well, or in Edmonton, with those kids …. A few other teams he would work on : Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles ….. he needs to be around other players who score. He is not a banger - he is a dangler and an opportunist …. - Goal of the Night : John Toews gives it his usual old college try, and fights through a d-man to score against Al Montoya on a kind –of- break away … and part two, he wins the game with a sham shootout goal, only of note due to his WJC history, where he came to prominence in a shootout against the US ….. Al Montoya had a dream WJC for the US as well, so for those who follow the game intently, they will know what I am talking about here … Dec 1 - Quick change in Anaheim …. Randy Carlyle out, Bruce Boudreau in … so much for the idea of Boudreau eventually running the Flames bench in Calgary …. Can’t blame the Ducks for making the change, bringing in a guy who really turned the fortunes of the Capitals …. Boudreau even gave a pretty fair interview to Michael Landsberg of OTR … probably on the TSN website somewhere, check it out … as far as sports interviews go, it is watchable - So long Mike Grier …. Grier acknowledged reality by calling it a career …. Grier played a physical game, going hard, bringing an honest effort to the ice, notching the occasional goal. Not a guy you wanted barrelling down an you if you didn’t feel like getting knocked around … - Leave it to Damien Cox to stir the pot in the Big Smoke …. His latest article has him pondering whether or not Randy Carlyle would be better behind the Leaves bench than Ron Wilson …. Tough go of it for Wilson … he has the Leaves winning and sitting in the top 8, but the talk of firing him continues … - Shane Doan, the classy cowboy from central Alberta, returns to Winnipeg, where he played for the old Jets, with the franchise formerly known as the Jets ( the Phoenix Coyotes ), to play the former Atlanta Thrashers, now known as the Winnipeg Jets …. Kind of messy, but neat for those who like to follow the history of the various franchises .. the Jets blank the Coyotes, 1-0, a goaltenders duel … - Still shake my head at the thought of Anti Niemi as a starting goalie, on a team that has Stanley Cup aspirations …. Sure, Niemi won a Cup as the goalie in Chicago. He flopped and flailed his way to victory, in a series where the opposing goalie was Michael Leighton, a guy who filled in admirably for the Flyers when they were desperate for a goalie, but isn’t likely to play in the NHL again …. - Columbus 4 Calgary 3 … next coach likely to get canned is Brent Sutter in Calgary, while the Jackets have been winning of late …. You better believe that Scott Howson and Scott Arniel were on the razor’s edge in Columbus, but the guy who is likely to leave that team now is goalie Steve Mason. Tough thing for the Jackets is that Curtis Sanford has been winning for them, but Sanford has been around, and been given opportunities to play, and was never able to establish himself as a starter … - Shot of the Night : Dustin Brown lazer past Jose Theodore, former Hart Trophy winner … seriously …. That was a shot to be admired, and would stand up as the winner in a King’s victory over the Panthers … of note in this game, Mike Richards left the game after taking a body check from Sean Bergenheim, caught Richards up around the noggin … - Crazy game in Vancouver, with both starting goalies being chased … Rinne found the bench for the Preds, and neither Canuck was worth there salt … Schneider had a .400 save percentage, Luongo a .800 % ….. as usual, after a loss, Luongo talks about the team. When the Canucks win, Luongo talks about himself. He won’t have much to talk about with the way he has played so far this year … always flopping and doing a faceplant, figuratively and literally, is Mr Luongo, he of the massive ego … Nashville would win the back and forth shooters gallery, 6-5, on a late goal against Luongo …. - Fight of the Night : Former Red Deer Rebel Aaron Asham has a good go with Cap d-man John Erskine …. Throwing bombs, that is what these two did, give Erskine the decision, though it was a serious bout with neither guy getting dominated …. - Oddly enough, the Panthers sit atop the Southwest Division … Washington is in slot 10, and Tampa is in slot 12 ….. can’t see it staying that way until April - Kouleas needs a mute button for Craig Button …. The former Dallas helper and Flame GM is okay in short bursts, but when he gets rambling on, gets excited, and starts talking loud, he gets annoying … if he is so smart, why is he not back in the NHL ? … he has a touch of pierre mcguire syndrome … a little too loud, not enough composure, though to Button’s credit, he doesn’t get as goofy as mcguire …. - Oh Oh … another dipstick player “ agent “ telling a team how to run the on ice operations …. Allan Walsh opens his yap and blabs about Blue Jacket coach Scott Arniel … Walsh is the, uh, “ agent “ for Derrick Brassard, who has been eating popcorn in the press box for the past month or so …. Just a question for Walsh, he of the big mouth and thirsty wallet …. How much is Brassard getting paid ? In negotiations with the Blue Jackets, did Walsh represent his client as a dynamic offensive presence who would impact the game, or did he honestly represent his client as a young player still trying to establish himself in the league, a player with some potential to put up some points ? To be clear, Derrick Brassard is in the good graces at Open Ice Hitter …. The vast majority of parasitic player “agents” are not …. “ agents “ are ruining pro sports with the typical greedy approach …. Nov 30 - Good collection of garbage goals, and a few nice snipes, in the Senator – Jets game, which Ottawa would eventually take from the hometown Jets, 6-4 ….who would have guessed that Milan Michalek and Evander Kane would be scoring at close to a 40 goal pace ? Unheralded mucker Zack Smith has brought a lot more effort to the number 15 than Dany Heatley ever did, a development Senator fans are likely pleased with …. Smith likely won’t ever hit the 50 goal mark, but he scores a few, likes to scrap, goes hard both ways, and lets the opposition know he is on the ice with a physical presence … - Are Claude Noel and Brent Sutter long lost brothers ? Or do they just share the same media coach ? - Interview of the Night : Jordan Tootoo brings some life to the usually mundane intermission interview, by showing up with a bleeding and broken nose, and treating it as he should, a minor inconvenience …. Can you imagine a baseball player or soccer player reacting to a busted shnoz ? Can’t imagine them doing a mid game interview …. You show’em Tootoo, a bit of toughness is a good thing … - Fight of the Night : Tyler Kennedy obviously has a bone to pick with NY Ranger loser Sean Avery … they drop the gloves, and get down to business …. They ended up on the ice a little too quickly for either to get the decision, or inflict any kind of lesson on the other, but the tilt had spirit …. - The Rangers took two points out of their game against the Pens …. Looks like Brad Richards might just survive the curse on superstars playing for the Rangers … Gaborik is scoring, too, but before we get too excited, remember Gaborik’s injury history … - Not the debut that Kirk Muller or Dale Hunter would have wanted, but like Hunter said, there are some things that need to be worked on … the Caps have been almost Columbus bad after their 7-0 start …. As for the Hurricanes, things unravelled quickly on Tobacco Road … Jim Rutherford maybe should have been shown the door based solely on the extremely foolish signing of Tomas Kaberle …. Hey, when it is nearly unanimous amongst the hockey rumour mongers that nobody wants Kaberle, no other team would take him, you know you made a mistake … What was Rutherford thinking ?? Kaberle sucked in Toronto, and was nothing more than a joke in Boston …. - By the way, both Washington and Carolina lost … - Had a good laugh at the Ken Campbell Hockey News article, where he figures the league should move the Phoenix Coyotes to Hamilton until that shiny new rink is ready in Toronto …. Like his writing or not, Campbell is not afraid of controversy …. Yes, he gets goofy on some things, and way out of line from time to time, and he hasn’t shown the courage to tackle the problem that is the modern “ player agent “ …. But Campbell usually goes public with his thoughts before filtering them too much …. For the record, the NHL should keep the Coyotes right where they are … when the US gets back on its feet economically, that franchise will thrive …. As for another team in the Toronto area, it would probably do well, but don’t overlook the fact that the brand power of the Leaves in that region is staggering ….. What kind of reaction would a second football team get in Dallas, home turf of one of the greatest brands in sport, the Dallas Cowboys ? - Interesting invite list for Canada in advance of the upcoming WJHC, the World Junior Hockey Championship ….. Canada has to be the favorite to win this, and looking at the camp roster, they look strong everywhere except in goal, a position that has been a total crapshoot at the junior level for several years now …. Big Names for Canada ? How about Jonathan Huberdeau, the big game guy, who was five-star through the playoffs last spring, and iced that Sea Dog Memorial Cup with a clutch goal … Tanner Pearson, leading the OHL in scoring … Brandon Gormley will be given the chance to be the anchor man on the point …. Hopefully the brass avoid a common mistake at the Hockey Canada level : the Stan Butler move, where he takes one of his class pets from his club team, saying the kid is a heart and soul hard worker, meanwhile leaving a talented offensive player behind, only to watch Canada lose …. Dave Cameron did it last year, taking Casey Cizikas, while The Nuge watched from Western Canada …..don’t make that mistake … about the only guy who had any luck at it was current coach Don Hay, when he gave Darcy Tucker a shot …. Darcy Tucker responded and delivered, and had one of the most storied junior careers possible, winning WJC Gold and having his name on the Memorial Cup …. The likes of Casey Cizikas and Jay McClement don’t fit into that catergory, so don’t take guys like that, or Steve Ott, to world class tournaments, unless you want to lose …. Nov 29 - Can’t wait to see the Caps first game with Dale Hunter as coach … that is going to be some good stuff … It would be great to see the incredible talent that is Alex Ovechkin return as a dominant force in the NHL …. The Capitals roster is loaded, now if they can match their potential with some accomplishments …. - Ahh …. Yes …. Mr Pacoreitty ….. hopefully he is smart enough to take his lumps with dignified silence ….. the unfortunate recipient of an unfortunate rub out by big Zed Chara, Pacoreitty then takes a very edgy shot at the head of Kris Letang, and didn’t make contact with much of the rest of Letang’s body ….three games it is says Brendan Shanahan, a fitting suspension for a cheap shot in accordance with other penalties being handed out currently …. No special treatment for Habs, no matter how loudly the fanbase screams, or however many prosecutors and public officials get involved … - Talk of financial strain continues to go around, rumours of teams not able to change personnel because of the salary cap and guaranteed contracts ….. so it is time to get the message out regarding performance based pay, where players are paid percentages of revenue, instead of being guaranteed a specific amount of money, whether they play well or not, whether the team and league make money or not ….. get the word out, get this idea into the hockey community … it is an easy answer to an easy problem, and though player “ agents “ won’t like it, it is the right thing to do …. - The Nuge in the top 10 NHL scorers …. Jordan Eberle and Ryan Smyth in the top 15 ….. Good times for Edmonton Oiler hockey fans …. The Nuge was considered iffy to play in the league this year for two reasons …. His slight frame, and minimal expectations for the team … how things change. The kid has shown hockey sense that puts him among the elite in the league …. As for the Oilers as a team, missing the playoffs now would be a bit of a disappointment …. - Ville Leino looks to be the poster boy for why it isn’t always a good idea to change teams in pursuit of “ all the money I can get my hands on “ …. He has been a total bust in Buffalo … he couldn’t crack the lineup in Detroit …. He had a stellar go of it as a Flyer, but his agent, Bill Zippo, notorious for greedy thinking and pursuing only the almighty dollar, steered Leino out of Philly for that big contract in Buffalo, and now Leino looks lost …. You know what ? Had Leino stayed in Philly, he would have still signed for millions, he would have been set for life, and he would have enjoyed success at the team level, and at the personal level …. But no, his, ahem, “ agent “ advises him to go to Buffalo, where the fans are not very enamored of his play right now …. Maybe all those extra millions are worth it, all the cat calls and insults …. I suppose ….anything for a dollar, right Bill Zippo ??? Of course, Bill Zippo took a huge cut of Leino’s deal, and very few yell insults at the sleazy agents, so what does Bill Zippo care ??? He has his money, that seems to be all that the agents and the NHLPA care about … Nov 28 - It hit the fan big time today, Bruce Boudreau getting canned in Washington, and Paul Maurice fired in Carolina ….. the Maurice firing is basically a sidebar. Carolina is far from being a contender, regardless of the coach, so this is basically a trivial move …. Or a more positive way to view it is that the move welcomes Kirk Muller to the NHL head coaching ranks. As for Boudreau getting the axe in Washington, well …. Simple. With that kind of lineup, you have to be winning. And winning in the playoffs, which is where Boudreau really struggled. Probably the worst idea he had, in hindsight, was shifting the team focus to defence last year. Kind of like hitching a several thoroughbreds to the plow. Anyway, Boudreau is no longer the coach in Washington … he doesn’t deserve to get slagged, or have his name run into the ground. Not a doubt in anyone’s mind he wanted to win, and put his best effort into doing so …. Wonder where we see him next ….. Calgary ? - Next coach to get fired ? Randy Carlyle in Anaheim is as good a bet as anyone, or Brent Sutter in Calgary … Carlyle’s Ducks sport the same 6-17 record as the Blue Jackets … - Max Pacoreitty blatantly aims his shoulder at Kris Letang’s head, barely touching any other part of the Penguin blueliner, resulting in a busted nose for the long haired defenseman …. Is this a dirty hit, in the current rule structure ? Oh Yeah. Sit Patch down for about 3 games …. Where was all the outrage in Montreal over this ? A dangerous hit on a premier player …. Where is the police investigation ?? ….. Look, Patch got busted playing up his situation last year, the team played it up, the media played it up, they all come out of the Chara incident looking like idiots … now Pacorietty crosses the line…. Have to sit him down for a couple of games. That hit looked exactly like Richards crushing David Booth, which is one of the checks that forced the NHL to move on bodychecks that resulted in head trauma … - Loved the article in the Vancouver Sun, by Ian MacIntyre, referring to Luongo as the backup …. More of this kind of writing is needed, it is good for Luongo, as it will help him shrink his head and ego, and maybe allow him to get his career into perspective with his meagre accomplishments …. Luongo has been a massive failure in the spotlight, having two disastrous appearances in the Memorial Cup and World Junior tournament before graduating to the NHL, where he has struggled big time in the playoffs …. Yes, he struggled last year, backed by a loaded team … Vancouver nearly blew it against Chicago, Rinne outplayed Luongo in round two, and we all know how Luongo imploded against the Bruins in the Cup final …. Both Fleury and Brodeur could have won Canada a Gold at the Olympics with that stellar line up, but Luongo gave up a last minute goal in the final to make things interesting … overhyped from day one, Luongo has never proven himself worthy of the praise heaped on him by the media … - Here’s to hoping that Taylor Hall is back in the lineup soon …. Hall goes pretty hard, and going hard takes its toll on the body …. The kids have really revitalized the Oilers, making them one of the most exciting teams in the NHL ….The Nuge, Eberle and Hall, absolutely fantastic to watch …. - Dale Hunter as coach in Washington …. That is going to be interesting …. Hunter is sharp. His London Knight team has been the flagship in the OHL for several years …. Seeing how Hunter handles Ovechkin and Semin will be fascinating. Does he dominate them on a personal level ? Does he buddy up with them ? Does he walk into the room at practice today and put them in their place in front of the rest of the team, or does he let them do whatever they want, and charge the rest of the team with going all out to support them ? Washington play their first game under Dale Hunter tomorrow, against the resurgent St Louis Blues, who have been very good under their new coach, Ken Hitchcock …. Nov 27 - Regarding Patrick Eaves broken jaw …. Zero whining allowed. You step in front of a slapshot as a player, eventually something ugly is going to happen …blocking shots has been all the rage for several years now, and with the amazing equipment players have nowadays, they feel indestructible …. You have a frozen disc of rubber going somewhere close to 100 mph …. There is always a chance that it finds a spot with no padding. In Eaves case, it was the jaw ….. so he eats his meals through a straw for next month or so …. No Whining about this, though, form coaches, players or fans …. Eaves didn’t have to step in front of that shot. It was his choice, and a poorly executed block ….. Eaves should have paid closer attention to Guy Carbonneau and Craig Ludwig back in the day ….. - The Flames stave off the firing of Brent Sutter for at least a few more days by beating Minnesota ….. the Wild are due to plummet down the standings after their surprising start …. Or maybe Devin Setoguchi and Dany Heatley are the answer to the Wild’s problems, namely a lack of offense and excitement .. - Tough break for Kari Lehtonen, getting hurt after a good first quarter in Dallas …. Lehtonen has never been able to put together a full season of solid play at the NHL level, after arriving from Finland as a golden boy of a prospect …. Will have to wait and see what the diagnosis is …. - Another great compilation from Jim Matheson at the Edmonton Journal …. He touches on a lot of great hockey stuff …. Check out the link …. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Hockey+World+Former+scoring+machine+Ovechkin+running+empty/5773739/story.html Nov 25 - Goal of the Night : Jordan Leopold directs a lazer towards the Columbus net, a shot on which Blue Jacket goalie Curtis Sanford never had a chance, even with all that huge gear … Leopold found the crossbar with a lot of velocity, leaving the puck spinning on the ice in the Columbus net … - That being said, the Jackets took the Sabres to school in a 5-1 win … suiddenly, the Jackets look good, with Carter and Wiz both in the lineup …. Who knows, maybe we will see a BC Lion type resurgence ? That would certainly be the story of the year in the NHL … for those who aren’t aware, the BC Lions are a CFL football team poised to win the Grey Cup, after a horrid 0-5 start to an 18 game season … - Absolutely loved the Original Six matchup between Detroit and Boston …. Except that it was decided by a sham shootout …. Big names, lots of guys with Stanley Cup rings, this game had everything …. The Wings got the win to end Boston’s win streak, though the Bruin’s pick up a loser point … - Another Original Six team picks up a sham shootout win, as the Leafs beat Dallas …. Didn’t like Joffrey Lupul’s embellishment after getting a light whack from Sheldon Souray …. Sure. It cut Lupul, but like the Monty Python character proclaimed, it was only a mere flesh wound … Lupul was healthy enough to score in the sham shootout …. Hockey players have to stop the diving and faking, or risk lose their status as the true warriors of professional sport … - Claude Giroux shows no signs of slowing down, picking up two goals in the Flyers 3-1 victory over Carey Price and the Habs …. Montreal seem to have settled in around the 10 and 11 spots in the East, an accurate slotting for their talent … Montreal sport a de facto record of 10-13, the Flyers check in at 13-9 …. - How long does Roberto “ Headcase “ Luongo stay “injured” with Corey Schneider on a hot streak ?…. - Sid the Kid has 7 points in 3 games … great stats …. But lets cool it for a while before anointing him as the Art Ross Trophy winner… that is what is happening on many sites, …. Give Crosby a bit of time before winding up the hype machine, okay ….. - Sorry to be a party crasher, but these guys are not going to be in the top 10 in league scoring at the end of the year : Kris Versteeg, Joffrey Lupul and Ryan Smyth … - Pittsburgh should make their current alternate jersey the mainstay, and ditch those hideous black and bland things they often wear …. The exact same pattern as the Ottawa Senators jerseys …. Kind of like how youth league teams wear uniforms of the same pattern … the Pens uniforms prior to the current ugly black/whites were awesome, with the brilliant gold trim and sharp lines … the current bland gold is soooo blasé …. When the Penguins wear those classic late sixties style blues, they look slick … - The kids spark Edmonton to another win, beating another upstart, Minnesota … Eberle and The Nuge were stunning again, and Taylor Hall picked up another goal …. The young Oil are absolutely fascinating to watch … the moves the Nuge baked that one defenseman with were so shifty, the big Minnesotan had zero chance to catch the 18 year old puck wizard … - Hit of the Night : Undersized slickster Jordan Eberle, one of the Oilers young stars, straightens out Minnesota Wild defenseman Clayton Stoner with a stiff shoulder as the Wild d-man attempted to knock Eberle off the puck as the Oil sniper entered the Wild zone ….. Stoner ended up smeared against the boards, then laid out on the ice … http://video.oilers.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlg=20112012,2,316&event=MIN146 Nov 21 - To call Sid Crosby’s return to the NHL triumphant would be an understatement …. Sid the Kid scored a goal 5 minutes into his return, and would finish with another, and 2 assists, as the Pens crushed the hapless Islanders at the New Igloo in Pittsburgh, 5-0, before a rocking crowd … nice piece of work from Marc Fleury to pick up a shutout … Crosby was electric, all over the ice, and looked like the King of the Game in his return …. Crosby has a history of delivering on the big stage, and certainly did in this game …. - On a more sour note, heavy criticism needs to be levelled at the goofs in the media who have started touting Crosby as a potential Art Ross Trophy winner … look, it could happen, Crosby was way out in front last year before David Steckel sidelined him with a cheap shot, or Hedman, whoever you want to pin the headaches on …. But Crosby has only played one game thus far. Give him a bit of time. To put him in the scoring race after one game is foolish, just like the goofs that start projecting trophy winners after a week or two of regular season play … - New season, new lineup, same problem …. The Flyers wild inconsistency continues … with a chance to claim top spot in the league, facing Winnipeg and then Carolina, the Flyers come out flat, losing two games against inferior teams …. Hey, when you let Alex Ponikarovsky score two against you in a losing effort, you can only hang your head in shame … - Interesting developments with Columbus, as the Jackets humble the Flames, 4-1 ….. new face Jeff Carter scored a pair, and Curtis Sanford picked up the win, with Steve Mason looking on from the bench …. It would be a cool story if the Jackets could turn their season around, after such a horrid start, with all of us just waiting for heads to roll … - Good piece in the Denver Post by Dave Kreiger, where Kreiger brings up the Avs management as the culprit in the demise of the franchise, namely Pierre Lacroix .. many laud Lacroix for his role in building the Avs teams that won 2 Stanley Cups … It says here though, the Avs should have won at least 4 or 5, but Lacroix slowly eroded the talent base that was initially brought together in Quebec City … if you go back through many of the Lacroix trades, the quality of players coming back to the Avs is constantly downgraded … - Boston 1 Montreal 0 The Bruins have won 9 straight games, in a bid to buck the curse of November 1 ( the trend of the top 8 teams as of Nov 1 being likely to make the playoffs come spring time ) …. Boston sit atop the Adams division once again, and should stay there for the duration of the season. The only real threat, Buffalo, are having problems with Tyler Myers being injured, Ryan Miller playing poorly and whining to the media about everything, and Ville Leino not having the impact hoped for as a Sabre after being one of the most under rated players in the league during his tenure in Philly … Nov 20 - Great weekend of hockey …. Especially for Oiler fans. What a game !! 9-2 trouncing of the BlackHawks, led by a Kid Line intent on padding their stats …. The fans at Northlands Coliseum loved it ….. that is how to break out of a skid …. A concern for Oiler fans however, as time goes on, will be Taylor Hall, and his health. The kid plays fearlessly and recklessly, which is awesome to watch … but when will the health issues begin ? Hopefully never, but the kid pushes very hard, and has already taken some crushing hits, not to mention collisions like the one he had with the goalpost on the weekend … - Stupid commentary of the weekend : Mad Mike Milbury, in a discussion regarding Alex Ovechkin, touches on the idea of dealing the Russian force ….leave it to Milbury to think about a trade, his tried and true method of destroying the New York Islanders franchise some fool let him ruin, er, run … Who in their right mind lets Milbury on tv ?? He is rude, loud and obnoxious, and has absolutely no credibility …. Eric Francis should have told him to shut up when Milbury made that idiotic comment … - More Jeff Carter trade talk … with wild speculation and rumours of him headed to LA …. The Kings have a large contingent of ex Flyers both on the ice, and in the office …. As one commenter on another website noted, however, would LA want to reunite Carter and Richards after the supposed party times got them dealt out of Philly ?? - Anyone who hasn’t read Steve Simmons column before should check it out … he just puts it out there, without fear of who is going to be mad at him …. His frankness in discussing the Leafs is refreshing, considering he is based in Toronto …. His latest offering includes a point about Pavel Bure, and the fact that the “ Russian Rocket “ really needs to be enshrined with the other all-time greats from the sport in the Hall of Fame .. - After the Oilers finished punishing Chicago at Northlands the other night, CBC went to one of its features, sitting a player down for about 30 minutes of mind numbing and pointless discussion … equally as pointless and silly as having the pretty blonde reporter ask a player questions on the ice over the PA system after the game … if you want cliché, if you want political styled response, then this is a worthwhile way to spend your time … the truth is, the players seldom say anything meaningful. They aren’t going to share the secrets of success, they aren’t going public with any juicy tales from the locker room or the last team drinking contest …. What would be better would be finding an intelligent or well spoken fan, and interview them …. That could get good, or have a fan debate, something with a bit of life and substance … - Looking at the mess that we call the NHL standings …. Please get rid of the loser point, and as far as parity, I am not a fan of the way players move teams so frequently in the current era / system .. It makes building a long term consistent winner very hard, and reduces the chance of a fan’s ability to indentify with a team … If a team is able to draft successfully and find top talent, it would be nice to see that team be able to stay together, without having greedy player agents worming for more money all the time … So back to the standings … and parity … A true dynasty team, like the Islanders or the Oilers, the 70’s Canadiens, putting up gawdy win totals, built through the draft, a person can really appreciate that kind of dominance. It is also a challenge to everyone else in the league to build a better team, and not with Glen Sather’s current approach of throwing a pile of money at the top free agent, a method Sather has tried repeatedly, to no avail … - Anyone hear from Kyle Turris lately, or his brilliant strategist / uh, “ agent “, Krut Underhand ??? Maybe playing stickball in a back alley somewhere in Vancouver ??? Turris has yet to truly show up in the NHL, several years after being drafted …. The two players Underhand likes to compare Turris with, Taxi Kane and JVR, well, one has a Stanley Cup ring and an Olympic Silver medal appearance … the other has had periods of dominance, and has played for the Stanley Cup …. Turris has been a sad excuse for a third liner at best …. - One last bit of news …. Sid Crosby returns to the lineup for Pittsburgh vs the Islanders Monday night … Nov 17 - A shooting gallery in Edmonton, with some great snipes …. Loved the Winchester breakaway goal … to quote Mark Knopfler, “ That’s the way to do it “ …. Top corner, glove side … of course, the Oil continue to slide, and the Sens somehow win …. Who thought Erik Karlsson would get off to such a hot start ?? The kid is suddenly an offensive whiz from the blueline … in all fairness, that is why the Sens picked him, have to acknowledge that - Goal of the Night : Going with Anton Lander’s first NHL goal, top shelf, short side, classic … Edmonton have high hopes for this guy … - No charges against big Zed Chara for wiping out Max Pacioretty …. No kidding. What an embarrassment on the part of authorities in Montreal , to even consider this. Making those authorities look even dumber, lamer and more pathetic were the stick swinging incidents involving, or executed by, Montreal Canadiens players, to which not so much as a peep was heard from the Montreal community …. We are talking about Chicken Turd Cammaleri, Ankleskater Gomez and Plekanec …. - Change seems inevitable in both Columbus and Carolina …. The wheels have really fallen off for both teams. Rumours are going around regarding a Jeff Carter trade request, and nobody knows what is up with Rick Nash or Eric Staal ….. and just because the GM says not trades or requests have been discussed, you can’t believe that … a GM isn’t going to go public with what is happening, no matter what Lyle says over at Spector’s Hockey … remember, he is the guy that scoffed at Carter trade rumours, based on Paul Holmgren denials …. - Are the Kings heating up in Southern Cal ? Back to back wins over the Ducks, with signs of life coming from Mike Richards …. - After a hot start, the Capital shave been awful …. Yes, that is a gas burner under coach Bruce Boudreau’s chair … if the Caps hover near .500 for any length of time, Boudreau will likely walk the plank … what to do with Ovechkin ?? I heard a theory coming into the year ( unfortunately, don’t remember which tv guy put it out there , though I am certain it wasn’t milbury or mcguire ) …. Ovechkin is trying to get buy on the same basic moves as he had coming into the league, but everyone knows his tricks now, so though he is a fantastic specimen, he is not nearly as effective … sure looks that way. The suggestion was that he needs to learn to use his teammates more effectively … - The Avs have plummeted down the standings to a more realistic slot, in the bottom third of the Western Conference standings …. How long until Dallas falls ? Can the Coyotes continue to be a winner ?? All good stuff to watch …. - Regarding the Chris Stewart wipeout of Nik Kronwall …. 3 games is okay for that. Pretty wild looking …. Considering it was Kronwall, I don’t have much sympathy … Kronwall has crossed the line several times in the past, always being let off by former NHL suspension guru / clown Colin Campbell, a former Red Wing …. - Interesting piece by Bob McKenzie on some of the penalties called Zac Rinaldo, the newest shift disturber in Philly …. McKenzie came right out and said Rinaldo is getting penalties based solely on reputation, for throwing hard but clean body checks …. This has always been a problem in the NHL. The question is this : Who fosters the culture amongst refs that would lead to teams and players like those in Boston and Philly being targeted by the blind bats ?? Colin Campbell is gone now, is it time for Walkom to be shown the door, too ? Nov 14 - Tough loss for the Oilers against Chicago, the BlackHawks revamped and vastly tougher lineup looks pretty decent so far …. The young Oilers team has over achieved this year, so fans of the Oil shouldn’t be too glum about a few losses, especially against Detroit and Chicago. The kids have cooled off, but that shouldn’t get fans too worked up either …. Happens to most players nowadays in the NHL, with the highly structured game, overload of coaching, as well as humongous goaltender equipment. It is hard to score, even though players are more talented than ever …. - The whole shot blocking thing …. With the improved equipment, players are fearless about blocking shots. Is this a good thing ? If you like defensive hockey it is. Definitely a lot bigger part of the game now than it was 20 years ago, when shot blocking by a forward was almost exclusively a move by specialists like Guy Carbonneau, who would try to slide in front of the likes of Al McInnis, positioning only their shin pads in front of the puck. Currently, players just position themselves in front of a shooter, fearlessly, not caring where the puck hits them , because of the protection from modern equipment … - It is time for the NHL to get rid of the loser point …. It perverts the standings big time ….. look at it this way. Right now, you look at the Ducks record, 6-8-3, and you think, that isn’t too bad …. They have fifteen points, and are within a hot run of a playoff spot. Their wins and losses look close when looked at in the above fashion. In reality, Anaheim have 6 wins in 17 games. The record should read as 6 – 11, the mark of a losing team …. Let’s get this straightened out .. - Doesn’t matter if Shanahan sits Milan Lucic for a few games or not, I am on Lucic’s side … Ryan Miller has become a whining windbag, and a sore loser …. And he is playing awful. Sure, the league wants to protect goalies. How about when Miller is swinging his stick at Lucic, or punching Dan Carcillo in the head with his blocker ??? ….. Do goalies have carte blanche to injure other players ?? … - Great Hockey Hall of Fame class this year, with Doug Gilmour, Ed Belfour, Joe Niewendyk and Mark Howe going in ….. Pavel Bure needs to get in their soon, too. Not sure who exactly he ticked off, but the more you look at his stats, and watch film of him playing, you have to admit he was a gamebreaker, a star … - Good for Hank Zetterberg to speak out about the 1-3-1 defensive system, and referring to the horrid style of hockey played in Sweden a decade back …. Call it scared hockey, or coward hockey, played by teams afraid to compete in the true spirit of the game … yes, a team is supposed to move the puck up ice and attempt to score … part of that is having the other team try to pressure a team into a mistake as they move the puck out of their own end, hopefully to create a scoring chance … - Another great column from Elliote Friedman, his 30 Thoughts piece on the cbc website …. He always has some good info in his column …. The best line in it today is the comment from Lindy Ruff, regarding Paul Gaustad, one of Buffalo’s bigger guys … Gaustad told reporters he regretted not challenging Lucic after the Bruin levelled Sabre crybaby Ryan Miller …. Ruff responded to a question about Gaustad’s comment by saying only this : “ He was on the ice “ …. Love it, and it qualifies the Sabres as soft, when your own coach insinuates that you are scared of the other team …. Nov 13 - The Bruins are really get it together, putting together another solid game, crushing a Sabre team that is earning a reputation as soft …. An idea that would not sit well with Robyn Regher … Bruins 6 Sabres 2 ….. Ryan Miller was chased in this game, and was crying to the media after the game …. Miller is becoming the poster boy for whining in the NHL. Maybe he should join one of those goofy “ occupy “ protests ….. he sure hasn’t been occupying his net much this year, being chased on a regular basis so far this season …. Nathan Horton made Miller look like a peewee on that short side goal …. - All the talk about Tampa and their total lack of a forecheck …. Eric Francis made a point that Tampa beat Philly in that game. Pronger said that wasn’t hockey that Tampa was playing …. Back in the day, long before my day, hockey had rules for players in different zones, and puck movement …. Basically the trap is over coaching to the extreme …. Here is what you do – penalize teams that sit back like Tampa did. Force a forecheck. That extremely defensive 1-3-1 is not in the spirit of the game. The game was dreamed up with flow and action in mind, not to have a passive ultra defensive system in place … - Speaking of the Sabres, what do they think of Ville Leino so far ? Leino hasn’t lit it up in Buffalo after being one of the most under rated players in the league during his time in Philly … he could be another example of being happy and successful with a team, and then staying there, even if it means passing up on more cash …. Of course, his agent, Bill Zito, would never go for that idea. It would take money out of Zito’s pocket. And agents like money, especially when it is earned off of a players back …. - Columbus is now 1-0 with both big free agent signings in the lineup, after beating Winnipeg with both Jeff Carter and James Wisniewski on the ice … Steve Mason played well for the Jackets, which was good to see. The kid has looked shaken all year …. - Get Mike Milbury off of the tv …. How did he get that job anyway ??? Worst GM in league history. Destroyed the New York Islander franchise. And you expect fans to listen to the loudmouth windbag go off about how to run a team, or the league ??? Whatever …. So who is dumber, TSN, CBC or NBC, all companies that pay Mad Mike Milbury to mouth off ….. - Goal of the Night : Really liked that shot by Tyler Bozak of the Leaves, a nice wrister from the high slot, coming off the left wing, in off the post, beating Craig Anderson ….. Bozak is cast in an appropriate role, as a third line guy, so he now has a chance at success …. The Leafs drop the game to Ottawa however …. - Hit of the Night : Milan Lucic levels Ryan Miller, as Miller attempts to clear the puck … Miller was sent sprawling, and his mask sent flying …. Awesome !!! In large part due to what a poor sport Ryan Miller is ….. remember his whining and crying in the playoffs last year ?? You know what ? A goalie is fair game when playing the puck …… Boston would shell Miller, chasing him from the game …. Nov 12 - Interesting tilt between the Ducks and the Faker-Divers …. Anaheim ripped the Canucks in the 2nd period, scoring 4 goals on Roberto Luongo, effectively ending his night, as Corey Schneider would come in to play period three for the Faker-Divers ….. so Vancouver woke up, scoring three goals to make a game of it …. Whatever, the Southern Cal crew would hang on for the win … Luongo looked like a fish flopping around on the beach …. Yet you still hear commentators and analysts refer to him as an elite goalie …. ???? Luongo makes saves due to his tall, Lanky frame being dressed in massive equipment. When it comes time for some athleticism, he is average at best …. And when the pressure is on, he struggles mightily ….. never winning in the Memorial Cup tournament, seriously, not winning a single game in two appearances … Is that a franchise goalie ? Luongo also flopped in two WJC appearances, and his failures in the NHL playoffs are well known …. Here is the deal on Luongo : he has the look of a potential gamebreaker, but he doesn’t have the mettle of one …. - Tough night for the kids, as the Oilers played in Detroit … the Wings continue a chameleon like season by dominating the Oilers, winning 3-0 …. The kids never really got on track. Letting Jimmy Howard shut you out has to sting … anyway, Oiler fans, of course it is nice to win every night, but be patient. Success this year with such a young group is a bonus. Next year is when this team should really start to yield its bounty …. A few astute by Tambellini ( I know that is asking a lot ) and the Oil could be back in the glory ….. - Things got western in London following a loss to the Soo Greyhounds …. Some little nipper from the Soo was rubbing a London players nose it the caw-caw after scoring an empty net goal to seal the deal, so the London player, Ryan Rupert, goes postal on the guy ( Nick Cousins ) …. Rupert swung his stick into Cousins stomach, then jumped him and started throwing knuckles into Cousins melon …. Of course, the game being over, the benches emptied, and the potential was there for an 80’s or 70’s style full on melee … how it didn’t develop into a full blown brawl is beyond me …. Check the video on you tube …. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cbsiHPxZfY - Want to know who some of the dirties players in the NHL are ?? Start with Ethan Moreau in Los Angeles. And don’t ever turn your back on him … Moreau has no morals or ethics, and views his hockey stick as a weapon rather than a goal scoring tool ….. After him, Patrick Kaleta in Buffalo checks in as a talentless thug who will run at, slash, spear or mug anyone. He has a good running mate in dimunitive Sabre forward Nathan Gerbe, who can score and handle the puck, but also uses his stick as an effective machete. Seriously. Watch Gerbe closely, on every shift, he is swinging and hacking at everyone with his stick. He must be a Bobby Schmautz disciple. For those who don’t know who Schmautzie was, check with Grapes. Schmautz used to refer to his stick as the “ equalizer “ …… Nik Kronwall in Detroit is another dirty dude, famous for late and high bodychecks. Stunningly, after a blatant attempt to injure on Teemu Selanne early last season, Selanne spoke out, calling Kronwall dangerous. The comments were met with silence … Kronwall, like the majority of the Wing lineup, also uses his stick effectively to neutralize opponents, often outside of the rules … Let’s see, who else fits the billing as dirty and dangerous … Yannick Hansen in Vancouver is about as cheap as they come, either with stickwork or late and high hits. How he avoided suspension for his cheap attempt to injure in Game 7 of the Cup final last year is baffling … Mike “ Chicken Turd “ Cammaleri in Montreal is another guy like Gerbe, conventionally viewed as a small guy who can play. Cammaleri has been involved in more than a few incidents, stick swinging, and contact to the head, yet escapes the label of a dirty player by most analysts. Not here ya don’t, Chicken Turd. We know what ya are !!! … This list wouldn’t be complete without the villain Chris Pronger, who likes his game edgy and rough. Pronger uses his stick, elbows, shoulders, anything, to leave his mark on the opposition. Pronger doesn’t pretend to be a clean player however, so the disdain isn’t there for him like the others .. check back in a few weeks for a more comprehensive list … - Have to like the play of Eric Nystrom so far … 5 goals for the Stars … Things have gone well for the Stars so far, including the re-emergence of Sheldon Souray from exile in the AHL. That sure looks like a dumb move now by Tambellini, by the way … When do the Stars fall off ? Or is Kari Lehtonen now a bonafide star goalie, a decade after being picked by the Thrashers early in round one ?? - James Neal stuck it to his former team by the way, as the Penguins beat Dallas, thanks to a pair of goals from Neal, one a classic snipers goal, the other fluke, but they both count for the same amount …. Neal was a dud last year for the Pens, but has been solid gold this year, on pace to best the 40 goal mark …. What exactly is the deal with the Penguins ?? No Crosby, Malkin missing games, yet they look like world beaters. Last year had the appearance of a fluke at the time, a team playing over it’s head without the two big stars …. This year however, the success has to be acknowledged … Nov 11 - Okay, getting back on track here … sometimes work gets in the way ….. love the comments from Bill Guerin, Nick Schultz and Matt Cullen regarding the bounceball lockout, and player opinions on their ill advised strike / lockout …. Basically, they regret it and spoke strongly against missing any time on the ice …. Think about it : playing a game for millions …. Like Guerin said, it is the owners league. The players get rich playing in that league …. There is no way for players to win in a money dispute with owners, not in the public eye …. - Great article on Ed Belfour and his Hockey Hall of Fame induction, from Scott Burnside at ESPN …. http://espn.go.com/nhl/halloffame11/story/_/id/7213314/2011-hockey-hall-fame-look-inductee-ed-belfour .... Like him or not, Belfour was an effective puckstopper, and Burnside doesn’t skirt around Eddie the Eagle’s rep as a prickly pear …. The article is a nice complement to Belfour, check it out … - The hit from Thomas Khunhackl of the Niagara Ice Dogs on Ryan Murphy ?? Brutal, cheap, dirty … Khunackl went airborne, targeting Murphy’s noggin …. 20 game suspension is warranted … this brought up some comparisons to the crushing check by Mike Liambas on Ben Fanelli. I will not change my stance on that hit, which was clean and legal – Liambas was railroaded because he was a tough guy. Fanelli made a dangerous decision to turn his back on an incoming forechecker, that is why Fanelli got hurt. Liambas came in hard with a clean check …. I will sit down and analyze that video with anyone who disputes this assertion .. - Columbus lose again …. 2 and 13 …. They are on track for one of the worst seasons in NHL history … interestingly, they seem to be taking the patient approach. If they don’t start reeling off wins in a hurry when Jeff Carter gets into the lineup, look for a major housecleaning … - Another team that could see changes would be the LA Kings … they lost to Vancouver, and instead of laying waste to the soft competition in the West, the Kings are struggling .. they sit in ninth place, with a 7 win – 9 loss record, not nearly good enough for a team considered a Stanley Cup contender … Nov 7 - Want to know what coach will get fired next ? It will be Terry Murray in LA if the Kings don’t start playing up to expectation … with a roster like that, they should be kicking butt and taking names … Kings lose to the Sharks, 4-2 …. LA had better win against Nashville Tuesday night … - Whatever happens in Columbus, there is not much sense in removing the captain’s C from Rick Nash … he hasn’t had much to work with as far as linemates, he plays a fairly consistent game, and as far as anyone outside the room knowing about a player’s personality or leadership skills, you can’t say too much, because we just don’t know … - Shocking news out of the big smoke …. Tim Connolly is hurt again …. Not to be too much of a downer for Leaves fans, but hopefully they have enjoyed the play of the team so far …. Can a team led by Phil the Thrill and Joffrey Lupul finish first in the conference ?? Hmmmm … look, it will be a struggle for the Leafs to get into the playoffs. If they do, Leaf fans, then rejoice .. - Scoring is up in junior hockey … Emerson Etem is on an absolute tear in Medicine Hat, scoring at better than 2 points per game, at well over a goal per game average … loved those days in the 80’s when junior hockey stats showed kids leading their leagues by scoring 200 plus points per year … It would be awesome to see Etem get close to the 100 goal mark … Nov 6 - The first one to fall, Davis Payne, in St Louis …. The Blues have not lived up to expectations this year, or last year, after a hot finish to the 2009-10 season … Ken Hitchcock steps behind the bench for the Blues, not the Blue Jackets, as many were forecasting …. Will be interesting to see what the former Kamloops Blazer bench boss can do … - Like him or not, Georges Laraque does what he thinks is right …. The former scrapper has made allegations regarding the use of steroids and Human Growth Hormone in hockey … What is astonishing in the debate regarding performance enhancing dope : resistance from the unions to testing and regulation …. Want to know why ? Because it harms the union, and won’t make them any money. Never mind that it is the right thing to do in regards to protecting the health of union members ( players ) …. Sports unions no longer exist to protect and help the players. They are now run by non-players who make millions of dollars …. Why would a union want to expose a less than flattering problem that would make them look bad ?? - After a hot start, the Colorado Avalanche now sit in 9th place …. - The Vancouver – Chicago battle was a little underwhelming, with the Canucks pumping the Hawks ….. Luongo picked up the win, but gave up a weak and shaky goal in the process …. Has to be tough being a fan of the Faker-Divers, watching that goofball tend goal .. - Love that Tampa comeback, down 3-0, battling back to beat the Panthers 4-3 in a sham shootout … - Sheldon Souray has 12 points in 13 games on the blueline for the Dallas Stars … really have to wonder about the folks running the Oilers organization …. Souray could have helped that team last year, not to mention this year …. Basically, Steve Tambellini and Kevin Lowe wasted several million dollars from Darryl Katz’ bank account … - Starting to find chatter on the internet about the Blue Jackets looking for a goalie … this has to happen, and fast. Scott Howson should have already made a deal, because Steve Mason isn’t getting it done … - Another fine for one of the dirtiest players, cheapest players in hockey, as Ethan Moreau pays for a dirty hit on Chris Kunitz ….. seriously, watch Moreau when he plays …. He tries hard, sure, but he is a vicious and dirty hack … Nov 5 - Oh Wow ….. talk about things getting ugly in Columbus …. The Flyers destroy the Jackets, 9-2, in Philly … the Flyers even angered their fans by letting up after the second period, when the score was 8-0 …. Jeff Carter was not in the lineup for Columbus to face his old team …. So what do the Jackets do now ? Will it help to fire the coach or GM ? Can you let either one stay when your defacto record is 2-12, and you lose a game that badly ? …. A good indicator of a team’s quality, aside from wins and losses, is the plus minus in goals for and against …. Columbus is minus 22 … far and away the worst in the league … - How the Penguins continue to play well and win without Sid Crosby is amazing …. Another win for Pittsburgh, over LA, puts the Pens first in the East …. Another thought, nothing against Jordan Staal, but what if, what if, the Pens had taken Jonathan Toews 2nd overall instead of Staal ?? - Apparently Kyle Turris and his buddy Kurt Underhand have now told the Coyotes that Turris would sign in Phoenix, if the Coyotes agreed to trade Turris in a deal the player lines up …. This according to Larry Brooks at the NY Post …. Did you really say that Kyle ?? Listen up little boy Turris – your agent, Underhand, is screwing with your career. Wake up, fire his ass, and get on the ice in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona, in order to prove you are a legit NHL player ….. - Another hammer job on blowout night, as the Bruins maul the Leaves, 7-0 …. Tyler Seguin scores a hat trick, while Phil the Thrill struggles against his old club …. The Bruins chased Ben Scrivens out of the Leaves net …. Phil the Thrill bristled at the Seguin questions after the game, and though I felt for Kessel for a second, he needs to be reminded that he is the guy who forced that trade … otherwise he would have a massive Cup ring on one of his fingers …. - And the Wings annihilate Anaheim, 5-0 …. Had hoped for a better game, but it wasn’t to be … Remember their playoff series two years back ?? That was awesome …. The Ducks need Getzlaf to play like he did then all the time … - Hit of the Night : Habs Mike Blunden lowers the boom on Rangers Brandon Dubinsky, who had his head between his ankles as he approached the Montreal blueline …. Blunden had just stepped off the bench, and absolutely crushed the Ranger with an awesome hit …. - Goal of the Night : The perfect wrist shot, that is what Brooks Laich unleashed, scoring short side, top corner on Rick DiPietro …. The Isles would come back to win though …. Nov 3 - Good examples of shot blocking by the Winnipeg Jets, as pointed out by Kouleas on his show … and good examples of how it hurts … this leads back to the whole equipment argument, as well as the argument about injuries, and playing smart …. Lets put it this way : If you get hurt blocking shots, I don’t want to hear any whining. There is a player on every team for that specific job, and the goalie equipment is already unfairly huge …. Anyway, the Jets top the Isles with a 3-0 shutout - Leaves 4 Jackets 1 …. It is only a matter of time in Columbus, heads will roll. Columbus is on pace for an awful season, a sub 20 win season …. Not what Scott Howson had in mind this summer, to be sure, but he is likely to lose his job for that awful record .. - Blow a 2-0 lead at home, and lose to a less than mediocre club ? That would be the wildly inconsistent Flyers … they drop a home game in the sham shootout to the Devils, with a goalie matchup of Bobrovsky vs Hedberg … if the Flyers get into the post season, what will they look like ? If Kovalchuk-Grossman miss the playoffs again, how will he be treated in Jersey ? Like the expensive primadonna cancer that he is ?? - Loved the Scott Hannan wipeout of the wimp Jiri Hudler … of course, the blind bat refs mess up the call …. Lots of inept officiating in this game, but the Wings lose again …. They are more likely to get things together than the Jackets, if you want a comparison .. - Goal of the Night : Guillaume Latendresse scores a beaut with some nice hands against the Canucks, dangling around a d-man, then placing a nice backhand behind Corey Schneider … the Wild would go on to beat the Vancouver Faker-Divers, and Cal Clutterbuck even got to punch a linesman in the face twice !! - The Leaves and Oilers leading the conferences … who called that before the season started ?? - Pekka Rinne signs on to stay in Nashville …. 7 years, $49 million bucks … Rinne is good, very good, but this is about $2 million too high at a yearly average …. Nov 2 - Nice road win by the Coyotes, beating the freefalling Avs in Denver … every year, everyone writes off the Coyotes as done. Every year, Dave Tippet puts a well coached and competitive team on the ice …. For the Avs, that hot start was misleading. Semyon Varlamov looked good out of the gate, but is playing like a borderline NHL goalie in his last few games … - Interesting that Pierre LeBrun would mention Sheldon Souray in his early Norris Trophy candidate article … it is early ( too early ) to be talking awards, but it would be interesting to quiz up the Oilers brass about this …. Souray has been using that cannon of a shot of his to great effect so far this year .. - Ryan Miller was chased early by the Flyers, who scored 3 times on their first 11 shots, and that was all they needed to pick up the win … this game got interesting after the refs lost control … after the first 2 periods, the Flyers had been penalized 4 times, Buffalo none, despite a few vicious Mike Weber crosschecks, the usual Zorro style sword work from Nathan Gerbe and of course, what is a Sabre game with the muggings and thuggery of Patrick Kaleta, who is talking to Brendan Shanahan today … the refs didn’t see a thing however, leading to an end of period scrum after the Flyers had been pushed too far, leading Brayden Coburn to take a shot at former Flyer Ville Leino …… the Flyers would hold on for the 3-2 win, but the big issue in this game was obviously the officiating, something that has benefitted teams like Detroit and Buffalo, and been very costly to teams like Boston and Philadelphia in recent years … - Goals of the Night : Both Scott Hartnell and James Van Riemsdyk scored classic top corner goals over the glove hand of Ryan Miller, perfect shots, in helping the Flyers beat down the Sabres … watch the replay of these shots, as they were perfectly placed snipes …. - Watching Craig Button try to keep up with Steve Kouleas is hard, real hard .... so Craig Button is supposed to be a pro analyst, and he is a former NHL front office guy, a fired GM ... someone should point out to Button that Joffrey Lupul is a streaky scorer, like Phil the Thrill Kessel ... the way Button was talking, you would think Lupul is a newly emerged superstar sniper. Having watched Lupul since his junior days with the Medicine Hat Tigers, it can be confirmed that the guy is a gifted scorer, but he has been in the NHL for years now, and though he will score his share of goals, he isn't likely to suddenly emerge as a gamebreaking 50 goal man ... - The whole hazing thing with the Neepawa Natives ….. hey look, a rite of passage is one thing, but when you cross the line and start degrading another human being for your own sick kicks, you need to see a shrink. This stuff has been commonplace in sports, the military, and other clubs / groups, but society is more open now, for good reason …. Ask yourself this : If that is your “ leader “ who is humiliating another teammate, what are his intentions ? What is his real motivation ? Is he doing something for the team, or his own perverse pleasures ? ….. having new teammates show their commitment is one thing, but there is a line that is crossed, when you degrade a person. That does not help anyone … If everyone can laugh about an initiation after it is done, then you have brought the group together. Not to be naïve, there are some personalities that will always put themselves first and take offense at everything … a little judgement and good sense is required here … Nov 1 - Looked like the Canucks eased up on the Shames after getting out to a 5-0 lead ….Roberto Luongo even won a game !! Calgary are stuck in a bad spot – do they rebuild, or try a squeak out a few playoff appearances with the current lineup … harsh reality for Flame fans is that they aren’t going to be Cup contenders with the current lineup … Vancouver worked then hard in this game … - More talk about Kyle Turris and his goofball holdout …. The kid is getting criticized widely in the media …. Obviously not getting great advice from his, ahem, “ agent “, Kurt Overhardt … What exactly happened to the kid in Phoenix ? Did he get a raw deal, or is he a baby looking to blame someone else for his poor play and failure to perform as well as draft mates Taxi Kane and James Van Riemsdyk ? Apparently the kid wants to be traded, with the Flames, Sens and Leaves showing interest …. - Horrid goaltending in the Anaheim – Washington game …. Jonas Hiller basically cost his team the game …. Ovechkin still kind of struggling, with only 10 points so far this year - Hit of the Night : Mikko Koivu straightens out noted cheap shot artist / headhunter Nik Kronwall with a stiff and clean shoulder to the chest, knocking the Detroit d-man to the ice, where Kronwall could be found picking himself up as Koivu set up the game winning goal … Absolutley loved this play from the underrated Minnesota captain .. - Anyone really think the Wings will miss the playoffs ? With Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Datsyuk in the lineup ? I don’t think Wing fans need to worry too much ….. the master, Ken Holland, always has a plan, don’t be surprised to see him make a few moves, or bring in a goalie … - Brendan Shanahan sits down Andy Sutton for 5 games, due to a sketchy hit on Colorado rookie Gabriel Landeskog …. Landeskog was okay, and truly, it didn’t seem like Sutton had malicious intentions. Sutton is a banger, trying to lay the body on a raw rookie .. these things happen … Oct 31 - Looked like a lot of empty seats in Florida for the Jets – Panthers game ….. too bad, that is a nice rink, and Dale Tallon’s wild summer dealings, where he brought in a bunch of his former players, have the Panthers sitting in a playoff spot … let’s see how long it lasts though … the Jets topped the Panthers in a sham shootout …. Amazing how Andrew Ladd has developed since the Hurricanes gave up on him … a complete two way player, and tough, too … Ladd was the 4th pick in the 2004 draft … - The current standings are all messed up, thanks to a few teams over achieving wildly early in the season … Colorado has started to fall in the standings, but how to explain the rise of the Senators, Dallas, the Leaves, or even the sudden dominance of the young Oilers …. Look for the Sens, Stars and Leaves to fall out of the top 8 in their conference, but the young Oil are going to bear closer watching … the Kid line has been awesome. The problem for Edmonton is the rest of the team … - Sam Gagner rumours are going around …. Remember when the Oilers thought he was going to be their superstar, along with Andrew Cogliano ?? In all fairness to Gagner, he has grown up considerably, and learned to work hard on the ice, leading to him looking like a decent 3rd line center. Can the Oilers get a better return than that for him from a team that still thinks of him as a scorer in the NHL ? He has some decent offensive instinct, but doesn’t skate good enough or move quick enough to play that role in the NHL …. Oct 30 - The Jackets pick up win number 2 at the expense of the Ducks …. It has been a hard go of it this season for the Blue Jackets, who had such high hopes for themselves with the acquisition of Jeff Carter and the signing of James Wisniewski. Now it is basically only a matter of time before a new coach and GM are brought in to try and fix the mess in Columbus …. The real failure of the Blue Jackets as an organization can be seen in their high draft picks. They have only nailed one early first round pick, that being Rick Nash. Every other high first round pick has been a disappointment or a flat out bust. You can’t go too hard on a front office for a few bad picks that high, but Columbus was terrible when drafting in cushy spots .. until 2009, they picked no lower than 8th, and have only Nash and Derrick Brassard on the roster to show for it. Poor drafting will sink a team, just ask the Oilers, who went about 25 years with poor first round picks, aside from Ryan Smyth, Ales Hemsky and Jason Arnott… - Interestingly, the Battle of Ontario game has some significance, with the Sens winning 3-2 … both teams sit in playoff positions … - Always love the Satellite Hotstove on CBC …. If only they could can the doofus Mike Milbury and bring back Pierre Lebrun or Eric Duhatchuk … anyway, the realignment talk – can’t wait to see every team do at least a home and home every year. That needs to happen. As for the visor debate, one thing is certain. Just like with any equipment, there will always be a weakness, a vulnerability …. All the rules in the world, and all the equipment, will not eliminate injuries .. Oct 27 - Washington undefeated no longer …. Thanks to the kids in Edmonton. Jordan Eberle scored the game winner in the 2nd period, and the Oil were able to hang on and close out the win over the premier team in the league ….Hall, Eberle and the Nuge are serving notice that they are a force to be reckoned with … - Wild game of pond hockey on Broad Street, where the Jets managed to outgun the Flyers despite blowing leads of 5-1 and 6-2 … at one point the Flyers led 7-6, but Jet captain Andrew Ladd scored the winner late in the third, to bury the Flyers. Most interesting was the post game interview with Ilya Bryzgalov … at least Bryz owned up to his horrid play in the last two games, but what about that huge contract Bryz had his agent secure for him ? Bryz has been solid to this point in his career, and will likely get his game figured out, but it looks bad now ….. Bobrovsky was even worse ….. Philly have been bad without Pronger, and this hilites a big problem for the Flyers. After a surprising 4 and oh start, the Flyers are now 1 and 5 in their last 6 games … - Love that Leaf win in New York, with Toronto lighting up the Rangers and Hank Lundquist …. Mike Brown scored a wicked goal, a rocket of a wrister that schooled the cheater Lundquist bad, bad, bad ….. Brown also put a beat down on some meathead for the Rangers ….- Time for Peter Chiarelli to shake things up in Beantown … the Bruins poor start has dragged on a little too long. You can’t go for a month playing poorly if you expect to repeat as Cup champs … with three point games and loser points, a bad month can even doom a teams playoff hopes … Oct 26 - Shortly after the firing of an assistant coach, the Habs pummel the Flyers, 5-1 to save Jacques Martin’s job … Philly worked the Habs over for the first 25 minutes of this game, but a late goal by the Habs in the first, followed by the Flyers hitting 3 posts, and some key saves by Carey Price, set the stage for a Hab rout .. the Flyers tried to play too pretty, and didn’t bury their chances …. Montreal just put the puck on the net … - 3-0, the Blues shutout Vancouver, with Corey Schneider in goal …. The Canucks are built for the regular season. This is bizarre. They can’t have a hangover. They didn’t win anything ….- Look for the Avalanche to drop in the Western Conference standings …. Losing to the lowly Flames could be assign that Colorado’s hot start is over …. Oct 25 - The best show to catch the hockey wrap up ? Steve Kouleas’ program on TSN, That’s Hockey 2 Nite …. Kouleas is to the point, with personality and knowledge. A far better option than the two idiots that seem to always be on TSN Sportscentre …. If you can catch Sportscentre with Dutch and Hedger, it is a good program, but the two juvenile idiots that TSN often offer up in the morning, tool and that other guy, they are both stupid, and don’t bring any type of dignity to the program. If I wanted to watch adolescent self indulgent foolishness, I would go to the food court of the local mall and watch the junior high school kids act out …. - Goal of the Night : Jordan Eberle fires a wrist shot top corner, glove side, putting it behind Luongo so fast the Canuck goalie was looking for the puck in his jock strap …. Eberle is a lethal sniper from the slot, and executed a perfect shot, lightning quick release, schooling the over rated Canuck goalie with the huge equipment … - The Oilers would hang on to beat the Vancouver Faker-Divers, 3-2, with goals from Hall and Horcoff, and another decent game from the Nuge …. As for Luongo, credit him for acknowledging his awful start the other day, but he was chased after allowing 3 goals on 4 shots to start the second period … Anyone seen Ryan Kesler ? What is up with him ? The guy has skating ability second to none in the NHL, but hasn’t imposed himself on the league this year … - Sheldon Souray, the Elk Point Rifle, scores again for the Dallas Stars … 2 goals and 4 assists thru 9 games … too bad for the Oilers that Steve Tambellini and Kevin Lowe couldn’t be bigger men and admit to the shortcomings of their organization when Souray vented 2 years back … Souray handled getting shafted by the Oilers with class, and is now showing what a pair of goofs run the Oilers …. The same Oilers that allowed their coach to make such a stupid statement about the Nuge last week, as in maybe not dressing their top scorer in order to see how the rest of the team looked …. - Sweet victory in Columbus, and over the Red Wings, too …. A 4-1 victory to get the Blue Jackets in the win column … former Portland WinterHawk Ryan Johanssen scored his first NHL goal, and Wiz made his debut for the Jackets. Ty Conklin was weak in net for the Wings … - Test time for Brendan Shanahan after the Sharks Jamie McGinn goes airborne to drill Nashville’s Blake Geoffrion right in the head …. By rights, McGinn should be sat for about 4 games after the hit … - Tune in to the Flyers – Habs game on Wednesday night ….. for Philly, another chance to punish the small Canadiens lineup, and drive another nail in the coffin of Jacques Martin’s coaching career ….. for the Habs, a chance to do something, anything, right …. Carey Price has been picked apart by Philly in their last two playoff meetings, and Price has been bad to start this season, so he needs to start getting in front of the rubber …. Oct 24 - Florida Panthers 2 Montreal Canadiens 1 … at Molson Arena in Montreal, nonetheless …. So the Habs are now a defacto 1-7 to start the year …. For those of you not familiar with statistics, that is not good. In fact, it is very bad … the Habs highest paid player, Scott “ Ankleskater “ Gomez, has helped out the teams effort with one assist thru 6 appearances …. In contrast, Phil Kessel has scored 9 goals for the Leaves …. Philly had two players each score two goals in a single game !!!! Stunning …. Sarcasm aside, it is kind of fun to watch the Habs struggle and squirm ….. they made out like bandits in the early days of the NHL, stocking a team with solid talent thanks to decent scouting and arcane territorial rights to players .. that system kept them among the elite thru the 1970’s … after a slump in the early 1980’s, the Habs put decent teams on the ice from 1985 until about 1994 …. Since then, the wheels have really fallen off. They had a good regular season a few years back, finishing first in the Eastern Conference, but were destroyed in the playoffs by a rough and tumble Flyer squad, a harbinger of things to come, as the small and soft Habs have been pushovers in the playoffs the last 4 years to either the Flyers or Bruins, both teams loaded with skill and or size …. Bob Gainey tried to retool his team, but his decision to stay small and soft was flawed. The addition of Erik Cole has been about as fruitful for the Habs as it was for the Oilers when they tried to use him …. Next up for the Habs are the Flyers …. That should be some interesting … - Leafs lose in Philly, 4-2, thanks to the 2 goal efforts of Jaromir Jagr and Scott Hartnell …. If you read the Toronto media this morning, Jonas Gustavsson is getting torn to shreds …. When reading Damien Cox’s article, the stats are very damning of Gustavsson, and Cox subtly points out that the Leaves brass maybe should have let Gustavsson spend some time in the AHL …. The Leafs had their moments in this game, including another goal from Phil the Thrill, but lost to a superior team. What happens to the Leaves when Kessel hits one of his dry spells ? For the Flyers, Jagr looked like he was 20 years old … Chris Pronger was wacked in the skull by Grabovski’s stick, likely out two weeks … Pronger is always getting hurt .., at least he has played this year though, better than what Tim Connolly can say. The brittle Leaf will supposedly hit the ice in the next few games….. - Another frustrating night for the Jest, as they lose 2-1 at home, on a fluky goal from Ryan Callahan …. At least Callahan was smart enough to put the puck on net, bouncing it in off of Zach Bogosian’s skate …. The Jest are having a lot of trouble scoring, even with Big Buff, Kane, Ladd …. Really thought they would be better … Oct 23 - The lone NHL game had Phoenix topping the Ducks 5-4, moving the Coyotes record to 3-4 ….or 3-3-1, however you want to look at it …. All things said, a decent start for the Coyotes, picked by basically all observers to be awful this year … that start isn’t going to help Kyle Turris or his, ahem, brilliant “ agent “ accomplish whatever it is they are trying to accomplish by sitting out …. For a player who has proven absolutely nothing as a pro, Turris’ strategy to force a trade or get rich trying is not very smart …. - The watch is on in Columbus and Montreal … barring a complete reversal of fortune, heads will roll in both cities … the Habs have never finished in the basement in the modern NHL. Could this be the year ? As for Columbus, hopefully the team survives … if the Jackets fire Howson and Arniel, who do they replace them with ?? - Some notes from Major Junior … in the WHL, two players averaging better than 2 points per game, Mark Stone in Brandon and Emerson Etem in Medicine Hat. It would be fun to see someone approach the 150 point plateau .. - London Knights lead the OHL with an 11-2 record … that is flagship franchise, to be sure. The top 4 scorers are all over the 2 point per game average, led by top draft prospect Nail Yakupov, who has 29 points in 13 games …. - In the Q, no one team has been completely dominant, and only the top scorer is at 2 points per game .. Zach O’Brien of the Acadie Bathhurst Titan … but keep your eye on the Saint John SeaDogs, a team that has 3 first rounders in the lineup, including Jonathan Huberdeau … Oct 22 - Marquee Matchup : Washington Capitals host the Detroit Red Wings ….. and pummel the Motor City team with no mercy, 7-1 …. That is a statement. The Caps dominated the Wings, and never really let up. Huge difference was goaltending. Vokoun has been top notch for the Caps, while goaltending has been an issue for the Wings for several years now ….. depth has been an issue for the Wings of late as well. The likes of Abdelkader, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton … they don’t scare anyone … - The Nuge comes up big for the Oil again …. A goal, an assist … and Tom Renney had spoken of not playing the kid. Either Renney was joking, or he is stupid. The Nuge has been superb, not to mention the Oilers top scorer …. Teamed with Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, he gives the Oilers a line that few teams in the league can match, with speed, puck skills, instinct and desire …. The Oil dump the Rangers and the much ballyhooed Brad Richards, who looked very pedestrian in the game … - The Montreal Canadiens are a de facto 1-6 on the year after an OT loss to the Leaves, who improve to an improbable 5-2 mark. For the Leaves, Phil Kessel has been money, but beware, he always runs hot or cold, and the eventual 10 game goalless drought will come sooner or later … didn’t like Gionta’s contact with Leaf goalie James Reimer . If that went the other way, a Leaf contacting Carey Price, the Quebec prosecutor likely would have launched an investigation and pursued charges … seriously, that kind of foolishness has happened before in Montreal …. The Habs bigger problem can be summed up like this – their big ticket guy, $7 million dollar boy Scott “ Ankleskater “ Gomez, has played 6 games, helping out with one assist … the rest of the forwards are either runts or softies …. - Tomas Vokoun has outplayed Ilya Bryzgalov by a wide margin to this point in the season … the Flyers have dropped 3 in a row at home. The equivalent of Philly trading Richards and Carter from a Capital perspective would be the dealing of Ovechkin and Backstrom …. Not smart. Holmgren really gambled with that move….. Philly did not look good in a 4-2 home loss to the Blues, punctuated by yet another bad Scott Hartnell penalty, after the Flyers had scored to pull within a goal of the Blues …. - Boston continue to struggle, falling to 3-5 after a loss to San Jose … not panic time yet in Beantown, but they have to get things figured out here pretty quick to avoid falling into the Elliote Freidman November 1 predicament ….. if you don’t know what that is, look it up. Friedman outlines the odds of a team climbing into the top 8 at playoff time if they aren’t there by the 1st day of November …. - Another loss for Columbus .. what an ugly scene that is. The Jackets came into the season hopeful of changing the image of the franchise. What has happened since puck drop has been a nightmare …. Both big name new guys are sidelined. Their prized rookie, Ryan Johansen, has 1 assist in 5 games … Steve Mason just can’t win, literally …. It is only a matter of time now before a major housecleaning in Columbus, unless the team goes on a long winning streak … - Larry Brooks of the New York Post is right when he says NHL officiating is poor … read it in his column in the famous paper … the problem is that change comes slow to pro sports, even when it could be easy and make a lot of sense …. It is actually fairly pathetic when fans at home know the correct call thanks to multiple camera angles, and some poor shmoe of a ref is acting all proud on the ice, even though he is clueless as to the legitimacy of a goal or penalty .. the thing to do is have off ice officials constantly reviewing the angles, and making sure the correct calls are made. As for the whole idea of “ challenges “, shove that idea where the sun don’t shine. It is a stupid gimmick. Just get the call right. We don’t need any stupid “ reality tv “ style antics in hockey … - Hit of the Night : David Backes tried to drive hard to the net, but was flattened by a Chris Pronger shoulder to the chest, a devastating open ice shot that ended backs night …. As clean as it gets, too, driving home the point made by Brooks Laich – they are all big boys who know risks, and they like to play rough …. - Interesting article about a Toronto hockey prodigy named Joshua Ho-Sang …. Windsor Spitfire GM believes Ho-Sang should have been given exceptional status to play in the “ O “ this year … read the article thespec.com …. http://www.thespec.com/news/article/613356--toronto-teenager-the-elite-of-the-elite - Why did Dale Tallon trade David Booth ? Tallon is definitely remaking the Panthers, it might work short term, but he is doing it in a way that is making Florida old before their time, to use a Ray Lamontange term …. Booth goes to Vancouver, Mikael Samuelson and Marco Sturm go to South Florida …. Another good pickup talent wise for the Canucks. But does Booth bring a better attitude to Vancouver ? The Faker-Divers badly need character in that room …. - Last but not least … Who saw the pass from Taylor Hall to The Nuge, that wicked backhand saucer? Awesome, especially with the new composite sticks …. The Nuge of course buried that pass behind the huge gear of Hank Lundquist …. Oct 21 - A couple words on Mikko Koivu ….. Under rated ….. tough …. As for the media goofs making a big deal out of Koivu’s gnarly cut, saying it was close to killing him : It didn’t, so stop writing 2 page essays about it. He will have a cool scar …. Everyone has close calls in their life - Another ugly loss for the Blue Jackets, 4-2 against Detroit …. Things are getting out of hand fast in Columbus. Their two big summer acquisitions are out of the lineup, Wiz suspended and Jeff Carter hurt. Steve Mason looks like a one and done performer, which is unfortunate, because he was so good as a rookie ….. this team is playing for the survival of the franchise. If they can’t get a few wins on the board soon, the axe is going to start swinging, it has to start swinging … - Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette offers up his opinion on the Habs trading for Gomez a few years back ….. this is not a good read for anyone who is a Gomez fan, as Cowan rips the ankleskater ….. http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2011/10/21/gomez-trade-looks-like-one-of-the-worst-in-habs-history/ - So Shea Weber wipes out Yanik Hansen ….. whatever …. The NHL doesn’t want dangerous hits to the back, okay, but this wasn’t all that vicious …. Hansen is a no minded whiner as well, too bad Weber didn’t drop the gloves and whip the chickens arse …… - Good on Joe Thornton for playing 1000 games, and scoring the winner in it …. Did you see that Kovalchuk-Grossman ? That is what you do to lead a team … even if Big Joe is a bit soft, he is a far better player than Kovalchuk-Grossman …. - Wow about the Dallas Stars. Who saw that coming ? Dallas has actually been good so far. Of course, they are counting on Kari Lehtonen, who does not have a track record of playing well for more than a month of two per year. Good on him if he gets it together this year …. - Thinking of another goalie similar to Steve Mason, who burst onto the scene and looked unbeatable. There have been a few. Jim Carrey, Steve Penney …. None lasted more than a few years in the league … - Dumb idea of the Day : Oiler coach Tom Renney has suggested the team might sit The Nuge for a few games, in order to evaluate the rest of the team’s performance …. Ahhh …. More stupidity out of the Oil front office. Did Kevin Lowe tell Renney to say this ?? It seems like a Kevin Lowe style hockey move ….. duhh, da kid mebbe cood be betta, duhhh … mebbe not play kid ….. duhhh …. Yup, from the team that traded Chris Pronger for a bag of pucks and a used skate sharpener in the same summer that they gave Shawn Horcoff $7.5 mill per year and Fernando Pisani, what, $3 mill per year … Don’t kid yourselves Oilers fans. The wrong guys are running that team. Any dodo can draft first overall and pick Hall or The Nuge … what else have the Oil done to better that team ? ( Okay, Eberle was good pick, the Oil have been decent in the first round lately, but Sam Gagner ?? They thought he was going to be a superstar …. ) Oct 20 - Another rough night for the Jets, as things are starting to get ugly in Manitoba … they lose to Ottawa, 4-1 …. Nobody should lose that bad to Ottawa this year. This jets team is basically the same one as the Thrashers from last year, a team that had a red hot start … Not sure if this is the year to tank and pick first overall ….. Jets play-by-play voice, Dennis Beyak, is excellent. Classic call, with dignity, no gimmicks …. - The Oil manage to blow a game in the last half second …. Allowing Dany Heatley to score a softie on Khabibulin with .5 seconds remaining, then losing in the shootout …. Unreal …. The kids have a lot to learn, but at least they will learn how to win. It is the veteran cast in Edmonton, career losers like Horcoff and Smyth, that have never played on a team with a winning record, that are going to struggle showing the kids how to close out games … sorry, one flukey run to the Cup Final doesn’t make a guy into a winner ….. Wouldn’t Sheldon Souray look good on that Oiler blueline right about now ….. - Reality sets in for the Leaves, who get pummelled by Tyler Seguin and the Bruins, 6-2 ... too much, too soon for the Leaves, I guess, but just the right matchup for a Bruin team looking to get on track … Phil Kessel had a quiet night, while Tim Thomas was solid when he had to be for the Beantown crew …. Remember that dolt, Pierre McGuire, and how in love he was with Jonas Gustavsson ?? Well, Gustavsson was porous in this game … goes to show why the dolt Pierre McGuire can’t land a GM job … - Washington continue to roll, winning a one-sided contest in Philly, 5-2 …. Ovechkin bagged a pair of goals for the Capitals, who scored late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, and never looked back … Washington sit at 6-0. This team is loaded, ready to run the table … the Vokoun pickup was crucial … - Goal of the Night : Have to go with that wicked shot from Jason Spezza, as he got the puck up in a hurry to beat the Jets Ondrej Pavelec …. Spezza was in the slot below the hash marks, and still beat Pavelev with a zinger over the glove hand …. - What has been overlooked so far is that the Habs and Jets have the same record …. Carey Price has given up some softies, and oh, lets check on the $7 million dollar man, Scott Gomez – 6 games played, one assist …. Good Work Gomez !! You are really earning that big paycheque !! …. 2 stupid things happened for Gomez to get that contract : Slats was stupid to give it to Gomez, and Bob Gainey was stupid to trade for that contract ….. Gomez is one of the worst of the Habs group of small soft forwards …. Oct 19 - Ah man …… Bob Nicholson talking about the age of kids going into the NHL draft …. Bob, Bob …. Look, when a kid is 18 years old, a legal adult, they have the right to play in the NHL. They might not be ready for it, but the opportunity has to be provided for them …. This all came to a head in the late 70’s, after the WHA played 17 year old kids for a while ….. the NHL lowered its draft age to 18, lawyers and courts were involved, etc, etc ….. it is a real head scratcher that in the USA of all places, the NFL is able to control so strictly what players get into the league, and at what age … Oct 18 - Only a few years back, Devan Dubnyk looked headed for a similar fate to what Red Light Racicot was reduced too …. Dubnyk had played in a handful of games, and took about ¾ of the year to register his first win …. Now though, Dubnyk looks ready to take over the starting role from the vodka friendly Nik Khabibulin …. What a great start to the year for the young Oilers. Aside from the kid line, Omark looks great, Paajarvi has promise, Ryan Jones is solid support player …..maybe this team pushes for a playoff spot this year … - Ovechkin only has 3 points thus far in the Capitals 5-0 start to the season ….. don’t sweat it. Ovechkin will put up some numbers, but his main goal is to win in the playoffs .. most important stat here for Caps fans is that wicked 5 and oh start …. - Tough break for the Panthers as they hit the wall hard against Washington, a vastly superior team. The Caps blank the Panthers 3-0 … interesting note : Jacob Markstrom got the start for Florida, and gave up a few weak goals .. Markstrom is cut from the same cloth as Luongo and Lundstrom – he is huge, wearing massive equipment . Make him move, and he is in trouble .. - Ugly game in Ottawa as Bryan Murray’s masterpiece, only a few years removed from a Stanley Cup Final appearance, get absolutely pummelled by a Philly team that was remodelled big time over the summer …. Honestly, how long does Eugene Melnyk stick with Murray and his inept tenure …. 7-2 the Flyers whip the Senators …. - Name of the Night : Harrison Zolniercyzk, one of the Flyers goal scorers in their rout of the Senators … - Vintage 1970’s hockey in Boston, but the B’s take it on the chin from Carolina, 4-1 ….. Jay Harrison likely loaded his drawers when Big Z Chara grabbed him and started swinging … lucky for Harrison that one of the officials kind of tied up the big Slovak slugger …. The Bruins continue to struggle, playing backup Tuuka Rask, to no avail …. - Hank Lundquist’s big equipment played better than Roberto Luongo’s massive gear in a showdown of over rated equipment abusers …. Rangers 4 Vancouver Faker-Divers Egg … the Rangers finally get a win … as usual, Luongo struggles to start the year, giving up easy goals, and playing like a hack … Oct 17 - Awesome show from Steve Kouleas ….Thats Hockey 2 Nite …. Kouleas is one of the best hockey talkers in the business, right up there with Bob McKenzie ….. great knowledge of the game, presents himself with class and dignity, if you want to keep on top of the hockey world, he is the guy. Unbelievable that the Score let him go …. - Nice showing from the Florida Panthers in a 7-4 beat down of cross state rival Tampa …. That is why they play the games, as the Lightning are the superior team on paper, but the Panthers had it going in this game. Lets see how long this lasts for Florida …. - Jeff Carter hurt again ? Yup …. Carter has had bad luck with injuries thus far in his career, curbing the great potential he possesses …. Columbus really need the former Flyer sniper to have some big years for them, as the fate of the franchise is in doubt. A couple of winning years with some all star performances would help keep them in Columbus as the Blue Jackets, which is why Carter was brought in to Ohio …. - Colorado at 5-1 …. Who would’ve thunk it ???? Better yet, how long does it last ?- Winnipeg hit the win column with a win over Pittsburgh … the Penguins got out to a 3-1 start, but have gone 0-3 since ….. No Malkin in the lineup …. - The kids win in Edmonton …. Man, that line looks awesome. The Nuge picks up another point, Hall bags a nice goal, and Eberle was slick like he is every night ….. watching the young line control the puck has been impressive. Beating Pekka Rinne is no easy feat … - Sorry Leaf fans, no undefeated season. Colorado take one from the Leafs in overtime … Phil Kessel scores a nice goal with a wrist shot from the high slot, beating JS Gigeure …. Guess Phil the Thrill made note of Giggy in practice while they were both Leaves ….. - Another good article from Elliotte Friedman, in his 30 Thoughts cbc column …. He did some stat checking, and points out that if your team is more than 4 points out of the playoffs as of Nov 1, the odds of getting into the second season are negligible … - Unbelievably scuzzy move of late from the NHLPA : claiming that money from Phoenix city hall to run the Coyotes counts as revenue under the salary cap …. Greedy, greedy slime in that union office …. And you know what the NHLPA will do if Phoenix or some other team were to fold , and 30 guys are out of a job ??? They will say screw them, guarantee it …. Money is being brought in from the league and city to keep a team afloat, and the union want a bigger piece of the pie … typical …. Oct 15 - Tough game for the Oilers tonight, giving up an extremely late goal to the Canucks in the 2nd period on the way to blowing a lead and losing to Vancouver …. The Kid Line was awesome. Nothing else can be said. Eberle – Hall – The Nuge gave the Oilers a legitimate shot at winning this game, as they have every game this year. They were all the Canucks could handle …. The Nuge has shown that he is NHL ready, even before bagging a hat trick tonight …. Eberle is an incredible offensive presence, a great puck mover and shooter. Hall is so dynamic, he keeps the opposition on edge … really good game, Vancouver stole it in the third … - It is hard watching Shawn Horcoff play, knowing how overpaid he is …. The guy is so inept with the puck, or trying to think the game offensively …. Definitely a stupid move on the part of Kevin Lowe to give Horcoff that contract ….. for the record, Horcoff has never been a point per game player. He approached the mark once, and was never close before or since, much like Scott Gomez …. Horcoff looked bad out there in comparison to the kids, especially when he blew his check and allowed Alex Burrows to score late in the 2nd period …. Thought Horcoff was supposed to be a defensive ace …. - Tough game for the Flyers too, losing to LA in overtime, at home, on a beaut of a setup from Mike Richards ….. Bryzgalov looked lost on a couple of the goals, including the OT winner …. Former Flyer Justin Williams also scored for the Kings, and former Flyer Simon Gagne drew the late penalty on JVR to set up the OT power play ….. notably, Flyers shift disturber Zac Rinaldo lowered the boom on Drew Doughty, knocking him out of the game, as Doughty came through the middle of the Flyers zone with his head down …. - Things are spiralling out of control in Columbus, as the Jackets lose again, 4-2 to Dallas …. Scott Howson needs to wake up to the fact that Steve Mason isn’t getting it done. - A correction regarding the Jackets …. From Oct 12th – it was stated here that Columbus had never made the playoffs …. That is incorrect. They appeared in the playoffs once, being swept by Detroit in 2009 … - Unbeaten teams : Detroit, Washington and the Leaves ….. Winless teams : NY Rangers, Winnipeg and Columbus … - Two of the dirtiest players in hockey : Ethan Moreau of the Kings and Jannik Hansen of the Canucks …. Just watch them. They are both hacks …. Moreau is incredibly cheap with his stick, while Hansen is dumb dirty, the kind of guy who will hurt someone badly one of these days …. Oct 14 - Nice win by the Hurricanes in Buffalo …. Might have been by a wider margin if not for the play of Ryan Miller and his goalposts … Maybe the Hurricanes get some decent performance out of their blueliners. If that is the case, things could go well for Carolina …. Speaking of the blueline, that was some heavy thunder Bryan Allen laid on Jason Pominville, a wicked hit, though it was obviously late ….. - Tight one in Anaheim, with Jonas Hiller logging a shutout and leading the Ducks to a win over the Sharks …. Much has been made about the Flyers radical changes, but the Sharks too made some serious adjustments …. San Jose made it to the conference finals with the spasmodic stylings of Anti Niemi between the pipes. That isn’t likely to happen again. Nittymaki is always injured … maybe it is time for Thomas Greiss to step up … - Speaking of players that are always hurt, Rick DiPietro takes a slapper to the mask in practice. Out with a concussion. Tim Connolly has yet to play for the Leaves, though his injury is “ mysterious “ …. Almost think Connolly likes missing 50 games per year. Hey, he gets paid regardless, and there is a lot less physicality at home on the couch than on an NHL ice surface …. And Ales Hemsky is sidelined for the Oilers … again …. And again …. Some guys are built like cheap toys …. Oct 13 - In the marquee matchup of the night, Detroit humble the Vancouver Faker-Divers with a 2-0 shutout in Motown …. Cory Schneider looked shaky in net for the Faker-Divers. As for the Wings, it was business as usual, an efficient machine, taking care of business and taking advantage of scoring opportunities .. the Canucks fall to 1-3 - Another top bill had the Caps icing the Penguins in overtime, 3-2 …. Decent back and forth between these two teams, of which much is expected …. A couple of week goals allowed by Vokoun and Brent Johnson …. And a gnarly fight … - Fight of the Night : veteran tough guy Aaron Asham, a former Red Deer Rebel, lands two hard shots to the jaw of Caps plug Jay Beagle, knocking Beagle out cold, and swelling Beagles mouth to grotesque proportions …. Asham, a decent journeyman NHL player, has hit double digits in goalscoring in the NHL four times, after twice reaching the 40 goal / 90 point plateau while toiling for the Rebels in the WHL …. He can play, as well as exchange knuckle sandwiches. As for Beagle, were not sure what the hell he was doing in that fight, and maybe the same can be said for his presence in the NHL …. Can you say cup of coffee ??? - Interesting game between the Habs and the Flames …. Calgary hadn’t won going into the game, and Habs hadn’t really looked to good, either …. So Calgary come away with a 4-1 victory …. These are two teams that will be very interesting to watch this winter. They could both end up in the playoffs, or they could both end up in 14th or 15 th place in their respective conference …. The Flames haven’t been able to play with any consistency for years, and the Habs are so small up front, and soft all around ….. - Embarrassing loss for the LA Kings, letting the Jersey Devils beat them. LA could only muster one goal ?? Seriously ?? ….. pretty lofty expectations for the Kings this year, and losing games like this won’t help them meet those expectations …. The Kings top the Devils in every category on paper, and should easily do the same on the ice ( Yes, even in goal, where the legend Marty Brodeur is not the difference maker he once was ) …. Lets see how the Kings do against the Flyers in their next game, a game LA will be up for, considering how many former Flyers players and brass are now in Hollywood …. Oct 12 - Another tough night for the most over rated goalie in hockey, as Roberto Luongo gives up 5 goals in a loss to the Flyers …..Luongo made a few good stops, but he didn’t win. That distinction goes to the Flyers new big money goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov .. Vancouver was badly outplayed at even strength, though they looked good on the power play. As for the Flyers, so far, so good under the new approach by Paul Holmgren …. But the season is only 3 games old for Philly …. - Rough start continues for the Bruins, as they drop a game to the Hurricanes … surely Boston will get on track ?? That is a tough and proud team. Tim Thomas will regain his form before long … - Columbus lose another one, and have yet to win this year, after losing in a shootout to Colorado …. This is a huge concern, as the Jackets played in front of only 8000 or so fans …. After the additions of Carter and Wizz in the summer, GM Scott Howson was looking for a playoff push. The Blue Jackets were at one time a promising young team. All that poor drafting combined with a lack of sharp trades or free agent signings have left the Blue Jackets as one of the most inept franchises in league history. They have never made the playoffs …. Columbus was hoping for Steve Mason to regain his rookie form, but it doesn’t look good for the left hander so far. Here is the thing : Scott Howson needs to bring in a goalie. He can’t wait. If he doesn’t bring in a goalie, it shows he doesn’t know how to run a team. And this is a team that could very well be looking at ceasing operations or moving if they can’t create interest in Columbus ….. - Already some of the dummies in the big media are at it …. 2 and 3 games into the season, they are judging the performance of players and calling them Calder Trophy candidates, Norris Trophy candidates, etc…. you need to see guys play enough games to show consistency …. Wait until December before declaring possible winners when it comes to awards …. I had kind of hoped that the removal of Pierre McGuire from the Canadian hockey media scene might cut down on this kind of stupidity … - One note for loudmouth agents like Allen Walsh : Shut Up. What a greasy sleazeball this clown is. Yipping off at his fool mouth telling the Washington Capitals what goalie to start. Yipping off at his fool mouth after his client, Pierre Marc Bouchard, baseball swings his stick into the mouth of Columbus forward Matt Calvert ….. morons like this guy are the type of people that make the world a worse place. Selfish, self important, self centered, self serving …. What a piece of crap of a human being. Allen Walsh – shut up or go crawl into a hole ……. Oct 9 - Hit of the Night : Dion Phaneuf crushes rookie Stephan De Costa with a devastating open ice check as Ce Costa cut across the Leafs zone just inside the blueline … very reminiscent of the shot that Scott Stevens laid on Eric Lindros to effectively finish big 88 as a legit NHL player ….. De Costa, Bryan Murray’s prized NCAA free agent, lost control of the puck and glanced down, obviously ignorant to the fact that Phaneuf was on the ice. Bet the rook looks for Phaneuf from now until the end of his career, because that was one beautiful hit, sending De Costa flying …. Awesome !!! - Kovalchuk – Grossman comes out of the gate firing blanks …. Adam Larsonn was very easy to read on the point for the Devils …. End result : Bryzgalov picks up a shutout as the Flyers top the Devils 3-0 …. Zach Parise looked good with that captain`s C on his sweater … lets see how things go with both him and Kovalchuk – Grossman in the lineup. Will the selfish and greedy Russian primadonna drive the Devils best player out of town ? - Kyle Turris is getting blasted on a routine basis in the media now …. Yet his ahem “ agent “ still has his spindly client at home on the couch, holding out for millions he has zero right too …. Kyle Turris, wake up and fire that slimebag, then get your duff to the desert, and show that you belong in the NHL before asking for the big bucks …. - Peter Forsberg has his jersey lifted to the rafters in Denver, in acknowledgement of a stellar career … then the Wings proceed to school the hapless Avalanche, 3-0 ….. oh how the mighty have fallen, basically at the hands of Pierre Lacroix, perhaps the most over rated GM in the history of the league … yes, I know, Greg Sherman sits at that desk now. But is he merely a puppet or bean counter for Lacroix??? - Florida Panthers in first place in the southwest … ha …. Bet Dale Tallon thinks he is pretty smart right now. Lets revisit the issue on about April 10th ….. Oct 8 - Hit of the Night : Dallas Star Jamie Benn lines up Allis Chalmers from Chicago, and drives the Black Hawk defenseman right through the glass …. The glass broke in a different manner, staying in large pieces, instead of shattering into several small stone size pebbles. The one big piece that fell on Hjallmarson even looked dangerous ….. Chalmers skated away fine, but the point was made by Benn finishing his check …. - By the way, Dallas topped the BlackHawks 2-1 … a lot of followers are picking the Hawks to re-emerge as a power, and for Dallas to be one of the worst teams in the league …. - Tampa open the season with a 5-1 pummelling of Carolina … don’t like the new color scheme in Tampa, though …. Things went pretty good for the Lightning last year, and one thing they have to look forward to this year that rarely gets mentioned by the big media : the continued development of Victor Hedman …. For Carolina, it will be a fight all year to get into the post season. They need everyone on the top of their game … - Vanek and Pominville each rack up 3 points as the Sabres dump the Ducks …. Ville Leino bags his first goal as a Sabre …. Buffalo is a team to watch, what with new ownership and an open wallet … maybe a bit much is expected from them by some hockey observers, though …. Ryan Miller is there only proven superstar. Myers could emerge as one this year. Vanek is a bonafide sniper … - Detroit basically toyed with the Senators before dispatching the team that Bryan Murray has ruined, 5-3 ….. so, the Wings are above the Hawks in the standings for now ….. let us see how this Norris Division battle plays out …. As for the Sens, it is a headscratcher that Bryan Murray is still running that team …. The only good move he has made in years was the Craig Anderson deal .. Oct 7 - Love those retro Leaf jerseys !! And the Leaves blank the Habs to open the season !!! What a day for Leaf fans ….. James Reimer blanks the Hab collection of runts, worms and softies. That goal by Dion Phaneuf was an absolute rocket ….. beauty. If Phaneuf can bring more of that, he could regain some of his old All Star luster … - Not so great a night for the Canucks, as they lose to the Penguins … somehow, Vancouver was able to push this game to a shootout, despite a poor performance from the over rated sieve Luongo …. He allowed 3 goals on his first 11 shots, and stunk in the sham shootout …. - 2 goals in the final minute of the first put the Flyers over the Bruins on banner night in Beantown …. Weird seeing Jagr in orange, tell ya what …. Love those shadow style letters on the Flyer jerseys, and the banner style Cup Champ patches on the Bruin jerseys ….. Brad Marchand had a definite presence in this game, as did Claude Giroux. - Whose idea was it to put numbers on the front of the players lids ??? Looks goofy …. - Top 5 Defenseman heading into the 2011-12 season : Nik Lidstrom, the classy and always poised legend, he simply can’t be shaken or knocked off his game …. Zdeno Chara, Boston’s towering presence, incredibly physical, with a howitzer of a shot …… Shea Weber, a bit of nasty for Nashville, as well as an offensive presence with a wicked shot ….. Chris Pronger, the Flyers game controller, he has lost a step, but dictates the play and pace better than any player in the league ….. Keith Yandle, unnoticed and underrated in Phoenix, a big body and a mind for both nets ….. Anybody screaming about Duncan Keith needs to watch the above 5 players. Keith had a decent year in 09-10, and benefitted from voters that wanted a Norris change, even though Keith was not the best in the league. He won’t win another Norris trophy … - Speaking of Chara, you just had to cringe when Van Riemsdyk challenged him after Chara bowled over Giroux with a clean hit …. JVR is no fighter, while Big Z Chara is an absolute destroyer when the gloves come off … lucky for JVR, a scrum enveloped him and Chara, saving the young winger from what would have been a painful lesson in bare knuckle punishment Oct 6 - Alright, showtime … defending Cup champ Boston take on the Flyers, whom they swept out of the playoffs last spring …. A classic and historic rivalry takes place as two Eastern Conference wanna-bees go at it with the Habs taking on the Leaves …. And the Penguins take on the Vancouver Faker – Divers …. Drop the Puck !!! - Zach Parise as captain in Jersey … good choice. Parise is an awesome and complete player when healthy … Jersey better get sucking up to him too, because if he walks next summer, that franchise is hooped. Ilya Kovalchuk-Grossman isn’t going to lead the team anywhere but down, like he did in Atlanta …. - Jason Pominville gets the big C in Buffalo … he is a long serving Sabre on a franchise that appreciates loyalty and longevity. Pominville has paid his dues in the NHL, and proven himself as a competitor and a bonafide big league player …. He should serve the Sabres well in this capacity …. Of course, any talk of team leaders by anyone outside of the dressing room is purely speculative …. Much of the time, even the coaching staff don’t have a realistic understanding of the true team hierarchy ….. Don’t agree ?? Think of it this way : How many bosses know exactly how their employees act when they are not around .. same thing … - Need to clarify one item … now the Flyers are settled with Bryzgalov in goal, many media types are calling him the Flyers first elite goalie since Ron Hextall ….. lets be honest about Hextall. He had one good season, and one good playoff run in his first go round in Philly. He was a star for only a brief moment. After his rookie year, he was at best erratic. He was not a reliable goalie you could count on for 50-60 solid games year in, year out. The Flyers last true franchise goalie was Pelle Lindbergh ….. all said , the Flyers have only ever boasted two true All Star calibre goalies in Lindbergh and Bernie Parent, with Hextall as a second tier star - A couple of veterans likely beginning their last tour of the NHL …. Nik Lidstrom in Detroit and Teemu Selanne in Anaheim …. These two are notable because they are going to be in the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, no question …. Watch them while you can |

Top 10 Players
ROSTER MAKEOVERS - JULY 1ST STYLE The foolishness quotient was way up for Free Agency Friday 2011. After a couple years of somewhat subdued spending, in which GM’s looked like they were understanding the idea of fiscal responsibility , not inflating player salaries beyond what might be called acceptable for a players performance, and generally composing themselves to a degree, everything got haywire in a hurry in 2011. Dale Tallon and his booster club in Florida may not know it, but he has already dug his grave, built his coffin, and is laying in it. Based on his past performance, it won’t be long until he figures out how to starting putting a few nails in his own coffin. In Philadelphia, Paul Holmgren gutted his team, and has really gone off on a tangent, totally changing the character and style of his team. And not in a good way. Holmgren may not realize it, but he has laid his head on the chopping block. It would not surprise in the least bit if he no longer has his job in 1 years time. Alright. Lets get into some detail. Dale Tallon and the Florida BlackHawks. Except Tallon didn’t manage to land any of the good BlackHawks. He has an overpaid blueliner in Brian Campbell. He has a third line guy who proved he is nothing more than a third line guy in Kris Versteeg. Another third liner from Chicago, Thomas Kopecky – he doesn’t even know how to do up the zippers on his hockey pants !! Yup. You are rocking it in South Florida Dale !!! He loses Tomas Vokoun and brings in Jose Theodore. Former Hart Trophy winner, don’t you know …. Sure. If ever a Hart Trophy was rigged, that was the time. Seriously. Montreal is a haven for organized crime. That could very well be the explanation for Theodore’s Hart Trophy. There sure as hell won’t be another one. Bringing in Ed Jovanovski isn’t going to hurt, and Thomas Fleischmann could be a star. But Tallon overpaid for both guys …. Yeah, the Panthers needed to spend some money. Why not spend it on Vokoun ??? Upshall and Goc are decent depth guys … Florida could make the playoffs. The bottom spots are always a crapshoot. But Tallon hasn’t done anything brilliant here …. |

HITS OF THE DAY Open Ice Hitter is now on facebook as Open Ice Hitter - Pure Hockey SASKATOON STAR PHEONIX LINK http://communities.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/blogs/openicehitter/default.aspx Oct 4- Sean Avery on waivers ….. the guy has been a fringe NHL player from day one, but instead of working on his game, and trying to improve, Avery has always been more interested in presenting himself as a sideshow, or an even more appropriate term, a clown. Instead of improving the gritty, physical play he could bring, he chose to run his mouth ….. now he is in the AHL. Of course, the clown will brag about his big salary …. Who gave that to him ? Dallas … what a stupid move that was. Stupid.- Stan Bowman was given a 3 year extension with Chicago ….. Bowman has been so-so for the Black Hawks, of course basking in the glory of a Stanley Cup in his first year, on a team that was built and booby trapped by Dale Tallon …. This will be a telling year for Bowman, as he has added a lot of grit to a team that plummeted to 8th spot in the West last year, after Bowman moved out half his roster, including Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien ……- Beauty article from Damien Cox, as he talks about the Canucks ….. he is pretty much bang on …. Vancouver will have a good regular season, and are the only Canadian based team with a snowball’s hope in hell of getting anywhere close the Stanley Cup ….. Cox also points out what donkey’s the Canucks portrayed themselves as throughout the playoffs with all the diving and whining, and how unreliable Luongo is when there is pressure on him to perform ….. check it out for yourself, another good spiel from one of the most prominent hockey writers …. http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/1064080--cox-canucks-in-league-of-their-own-in-canada- A couple of interesting signings …. Ray Emery wins the backup job in Chicago, getting a one year deal. Don’t be surprised if he ends up as the top goalie in Chicago. Corey Crawford is all about huge equipment and positioning. Emery can actually move when required. And Fabian Brunnstrom gets a contract in Detroit. Lets see if the Wings can turn him into a player …- Can’t believe Chuck Gormely moved to Washington to cover the Caps …. Did Paul Holmgren trade him too ?
