Going to an NHL game is always great, but it is also expensive. The ticket price is just the start, and depending on the company you keep, maybe with family and kids, or maybe with buddies, the price of going to a game can get up there, after you buy some burgers, pops, pizza, all the other goodies. Of course, this goes to buying the team owner a new limo, and to pay amazing talents like Ovechkin, Crosby and Martin Brodeur. Shell out some more cash for a team jersey, a ball cap, or some other garb or collectibles, and the yearly expenditure by average Joe and Jane on NHL items can get into the thousands of dollars.....and this does not include hidden costs, what a person pays to NHL sponsors like beer companies, auto manufacturers and the like, who in turn pay big advertising dollars to the league, its teams, and its players. Some of the players are amazing, and have achieved feats of greatness, and I don’t begrudge them a penny. However, some of the “ players “ cashing their multi million dollar paychecks haven’t earned the big green, and they need to be called out and shamed. You hearing me, Michael Nylander and Dan Cloutier, Scott Gomez and Brian Campbell, Cristobal Huet and Nik Khabibulin ? These are the bums that drive the cost up for the fans, the most overpaid slackers in the NHL......JS Giguere Anaheim - $ 6,000,000 His best days seemingly behind him, he has not been able to hold the starters job for the Ducks since their Cup winRon Hainsey Atlanta - $ 4,500,000 How did he get this contract? Casual hockey fans won’t even know who this guy is, and hab fans won’t admit he ever played for them...Nik Antropov Atlanta - $ 4,000,000 This is why Don Waddell needs to be fired. Antropov is a career under achiever . His best years are hitting 20 goals, which he has done twice..... |

National Hockey League GM Rankings Okay, with most of the off season changes already made, excepting the incredibly disappointing San Jose Sharks, it is time to critique architects of the teams. I am sticking by my claim that the NHL currently only has two General Managers that can be labelled as good, or successful, however you want to phrase it. How can I say this? Easy. The criteria is continued success, not just one good season or one surprising and lucky run to the Stanley Cup final, hey Kevin Lowe? For teams that have made changes in the off season, we will grade the outgoing GM, and depending on the experience level of the newcomer, we will either grade or comment on the new suit. |

Jan 2 - So many days, so much to talk about...... start with the Winter Classic, where the Bruins finally pull off a successful attempt at Too Many Men on the Ice, capping off a comeback win over the Flyers with about 7 players on the frozen water, much to the delight of the New England Throngs....- Considering the struggles of a handful of NHL teams that had elevated expectations, it is surprising to see the restraint of the axemen in regards to head coaches. That may be starting to change, as Andy Murray joins John Stevens amongst the fired.... In truth, the Blues success at the end of last year was a fluke, though they do have some young talent to build on, including the suspension proof Barret Jackman- USA name their Olympic roster, and go with a youth movement, maybe looking to get some energy to replace the experience of some older players like Guerin and Modano, and the ineffective and over rated Gomez. One question is : Langenbruner ?? Modano would have been better....- The revelation of the WJC to date, hands down, is Nino Neiderreiter of Switzerland. The big power forward has been the complete package, with a definite physical presence, good skating ability, play in all areas of the rink, and not to be overlooked, goal scoring ability and a sense of how to create offense..... |
